Today, I started my dream job of being a veterinarian. My first day consisted of having to put down 12 dogs and 5 cats. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, it has been my lifelong dream to work with animals. My dream sorta came true. I now work at the slaughterhouse. FML
Traumatic
Today, I started my community service at the dog pound. I like animals so I thought it would be a good place to do it. As I arrived they were throwing dogs that had been euthanized into a dump truck to be taken to a landfill. That was my job for the day. FML
Today, it was my first day as an animal control officer. My first dispatch was to collect a dog that had been hit by a car. I had to clean up my dead dog on my first day of a job that barely pays rent. FML
Today, after 8 years in exceptionally difficult veterinarian classes which put me $200,000 in debt, and 7 months of job searching, I finally got a job. I will be inspecting feces for worms while making minimum wage. FML
Today, it was my first day working at a dog boarding kennel. I got bit... by my coworker. FML
Today, it's my sixth day taking care of my family's seven animals while my parents are in Singapore. So far, I've emergency-called the vet twice, taken a dog to the vet once, and cleaned up liquid dog shit five times. FML
Time for lunch in the parking lot
Today, I started my first day of work at our local humane society. I asked where the break room was, so my coworker directed me to a small room in the back of the building. The only place I get to take my lunch break is the same room where they euthanize, freeze, and cremate the animals. FML
Today, I was hired as a student assistant. I was excited, until I learned on my very first day that "Supporting the academic staff in their research" actually meant walking the professor's dog. FML
Serial killer vibes
Today, when my son told me he wanted to work with animals, I thought he meant a vet, turns out his actual career goal was to be the guy who puts the strays to sleep at the animal control centre. He got that job and I’ve never seen him happier. What monster have I raised? FML
Today, during my shift as a vet nurse, I picked up a gorgeous cat for cuddles, only to discover it was covered with pee. And now I am too. I still have 4 hours of my shift. FML

It's sad I know, but if they were sick or hurt you're still helping them. You have a great job OP, be proud.

I once wanted to be a vet, but the thought of having to put down so many animals turned me away. I realized I made a good decision as even reading this FML makes me cry.

I'm still going to be a vet even though it's sad to put down an animal I know it's helping get rid of the pain their in

Why do they say "put down" as if it's some gentle thing like resting them on a feather pillow. Lets say it like it is: You kill puppies and kittens for money. YDI

It's not killing the animal for money how can you say that!? Your saying it like there killing healthy animals for the fun of it. Putting down an animal means your getting rid of the pain it's in. Except in shelters which I hate. All shelters need to be no kill shelters.

OP, thank you for doing a hard but needed job. I admired and thanked the vets who put my pets down, even through my tears, because I knew it was hard on them, too. "The new guy" always got the job if my regular vet wasn't available.

Get used to it, champ. You knew what you were getting into.

That's part of the reason I don't want to be a vet :(

Dear OP, I'm a vet too, and I can understand your day better than most. In many ways I hope you don't read this, as I know that if you've been reading through the comments, you will (like most vets) end up focussing on the bad rather than the good. Thankfully, most people have been respectful rather than ignorant, rude, and insensitive. If you are reading this, though, know that it will get better. Tomorrow you'll have your first client with a new pup or kitten who you get to see through vaccines, spay/neuter, and into their adult life. You'll have a CCL rupture and an amazing client who agrees to a TPLO without hesitation. You'll fix an animal and see the bright light of gratitude in someone's eyes that makes the job worthwhile. I have no doubt that you're a strong, competent and caring vet, and that you're going to be great. You probably also have friends, family and colleagues to whom you can vent. But if you want someone anonymous - a colleague who understands what you're going through - to talk to, drop me a line. I'll be happy to help. Keep up the good work.

Well, I was going to reply but it seems #136 has said everything I wanted to say. OP, you're doing good. Sometimes you're going to have days where you just feel down and think, "Why did I even get into this career?" but when you save an animal's life and see the joy on the owner's face as s/he is tearful and thanking you for helping sweet Rover, it'll make it all worth it. Trust me. The good will always outweigh the bad in my book. Stay positive; tomorrow is a new day. Filled with fecals, success, and probably a few puppy kisses. :)

Hopefully she'll get soon enough that we don't like 16 year olds.

Can't be all you did that day.

137- I think it was the fact that she was one of the obsessed Directioners that make death threats to anyone who says they don't like their music.....

I totally understand. I am in college right now becoming a vet tech, and I have worked and volunteered with animals since I was 16. I worked at a bird rehab, humane societies, veterinary hospitals, zoos, and currently at a dog kennel. So I have unfortunately had to deal with animals being put down, and I understand how hard it is. Sorry OP, don't listen to anyone else who doesn't understand.
