Today, I got yelled at in my office. It's construction, and I'm the youngest woman. One of my male bosses yelled at me because grown-ass adults won't sign in the log. Either I get my ass kicked by construction guys over a sign-in sheet, or yelled at by my boss. I can't win. FML

Hi guys, OP here. Some background info- The guy who yelled at me is only here 80% of the week, and he's not the boss I report to. He just thinks he is, and how he behaved was unacceptable.(He's trying to make the office his own show, but it's not working.) The boss of my division wasn't happy about how he handled things, so he was definitely in the wrong. My co workers are defending me, and this wasn't my fault since it's not my responsibility. I'm a receptionist, not an office manager. If they don't want to sign in- he should be yelling at THEM and not me.

If it's your job, then find a way to compel them to sign the log. I work in construction, and if the guys don't clock in or whatever we need them to do in the morning, then they get no vehicle keys or work orders. And if they don't get their work done or they're short on hours because they screwed around, then it's their ass, not mine or anyone else in the office.

Well at least they are standing up for you against a man on a power trip! Hope it gets better OP!

I know that it sucks to be held responsible for the actions of others but that is what teaching is all about so I understand your pain. Think about what your best teachers did to help and motivate you. They probably set up visuals, structures, and routines. For example, a big sign telling them to sign-in so they don't forget that they see first thing, a friendly verbal reminder, and your checking on the log before issuing keys or a work order. Get to know the guys so you can ask them about their favorite sports team or kids so you say more positive things than negative things to them to change the tone of your interactions. Try it!

You Deserve It. You do your job no matter what. You do not answer to your colleagues but to your boss.

It's your job. There are almost always people below you and above you, unless you work at the lowest level possible and I doubt you'd prefer that. Even CEO's report to shareholders and the board. And there are always conflicts of interest. I don't see why you have to mention age and gender here. Take your responsibility.

Yelling at an employee is bad behaviour, especially if it's in front of others. Try recording these meetings and report your boss. You can't solve sexism in the workplace by simply "learning to do your job right" as insensitive males here try to convince you.

They never experienced sexism at workplace so it doesn't exist. q.e.d.

Exactly, if she is trying to get some respect from co-workers (like having them sign in without threatening her) her boss yelling at her is just making the issue worse. They see Boss treating her like crap and they think it is okay... OP, good luck with it all. I don't have a problem being a "bitch" to make anyone listen to me, but I get it isn't always easy. Try taking your boss aside as someone else mentioned, or send a letter if you think it would be received better, and don't let those guys walk all over you!

I'm sorry, I'm confused what the issue is. You're required to sign in for your job and the people I assume you're managing don't like it? Last time I checked you're paid to do a job and if that job includes clocking in by using a sheet then I suggest everyone do so. Perhaps you are concerned with not being "one of the guys" and that's you're really concern? because I highly doubt that you are going to actually get beat up for asking grown adults to do their job.

You never experienced working with a truly stubborn and lazy person have you? They don't care if it's they're job or a requirement to do whatever specific task, they just won't do it, and will bitch if you push them and sometimes alienate you from your coworkers, even if all you're doing is your job, they can make your life hell. I had a coworker, who was always 1st back up for cashier, I was the main cashier, well she hated this job because she didn't like dealing with busy times or people. So, when I'd call her up for help, she just wouldn't come, just let me deal with all of it and the long line up of people. When I gave her shit for it, telling her that it's part of her job, she's the one who got upset, whining about how frustrating it is. Worst part is, she was good friends with the manager, so she got away with it. Then, all my other coworkers started doing this, and, like her, got angry when I called them up for help, making the store very inefficient. Also, because I was the main cashier, guess who got the complaints and had to deal with the anger of of impatient customers, and the criticism of the regional manager, it was me. I was never worried about being "one of the guys," I just was tired of getting in trouble for something that wasn't my fault and alls I wanted was for people to do their ******* jobs.

You know what they say about assuming... Also, yeah, it's nearly impossible to force an entire office of people to do a small task every single day if they don't want to, unless you have REAL power over them and upper management to back you up. Which rarely, if ever, happens.

Why is everybody in the construction business so mean. I have been doing construction for a month and everyone is an asshole

Seriously tho. they're all so rude!

Start telling people that if they don't sign in they won't get paid for the day. This a way off taking attendance

Tell him to go yell at the workers who don't sign in, and walk out. People will only give as much shit as you would let them

Guys like that have a habit of not sticking around for too long. it takes a while but that person will be let go sooner than later. I've seen similar issues at my office (large construction firm) it took 14 months to get rid of the PM but they did it and everyone on that contract is better off.

being young may be the issue ..being a woman .not so much.. hold you ground and be short and to the point sign the damn log please, i get shit on when you don't or failure to sign may affect your pay. nice and friendly but firm ..they will bitch and gripe like children but train them for a week or rwo and it will be second nature good luck
