Today, I got fired via Facebook messenger in a chat that also included a coworker. FML

OP here. I was actually a 1099 'contractor' so there's very little recourse, HR wise. My boss had recently restructured pay to where I was making way less money...so I was suggesting other ways for me to go about my job so it was more efficient/profitable. He got pissy, I didn't back down, he said ' Whatever, I'm down with this, good luck to you' and I was offered another job that's $5/hr more, like, 30 min later.

This is an issue that should actually be taken up with your company's HR department.

Now I'm curious as to why you were fired. Either way your boss is very unprofessional and you're probably better off finding a new job anyways.

Well I could see being fired for something they said in the chat as a damage limitation move. But unless it was something they just did in that chat, it's very unprofessional

Why would that not be allowed though? If the chat only had coworkers on it, why is it different from a manager firing an employee in front of customers or staff? It's unprofessional but I don't think it's illegal for any business to do that..

Really depends what the OP said and social media isn't protected if you make your job look bad on your Twitter on your Facebook whatever they can and will fire you

Nothing was said except in PM/messenger. I was discussing job related processes and my boss lost his shit. It'd been coming to a head for awhile. But I've worked for him for years and he couldn't bother with in person/a phone call or privacy.

Unprofessional yes, but not illegal. Unless in their message they attempted to deface you or if its a case of wrongful termination. Most employers (with the exception of those qhobissue contracts to employees) can fire someone any way they want whether it be via phone, text, chat, email...the list goes on.

I believe this is illegal (the part that included a coworker). A business is not supposed to tell why you got fired in front of other coworkers. I know that in my manager classes that I had taken a while ago, they said that you are not allowed to state why you fire anyone in front of other coworkers.

Good for you OP! Show him who's boss, and use that extra money for the honeys :)
