Today, I found out that even though I suffer from insomnia most days, I can sleep within 5 minutes of studying Solid Mechanics, especially when I have an end term the next day. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, I woke up at 5 and studied for my 9:30am exam for 4 hours. When I left my dorm at 9, it was dark outside. Turns out I slept through the entire day and woke up at 5pm. FML
Today, I decided to sleep in for 5 extra minutes. Those 5 extra minutes became 55 minutes, which, coincidentally, was roughly the length of the midterm I missed. FML
Social animal
Today, I realised that the only thing that's got fucked since I started university is my sleep cycle. FML
Away with the fairies
Today, I stayed up all night to study for my anatomy final at 9 a.m. I studied outside the testing room in the hall all night. Apparently, I fell asleep with my headphones on, as my friend woke me up after walking out of the test, asking how I did. 300 classmates walked by and no one woke me up. FML
Today, I had a Biochemistry exam. I studied all night but took a nap to get some rest because my exam was in the morning. I woke up at 10, feeling very confident. My exam was at 9. FML
Today, I had the worst day of my life. I'd studied science for the whole damn night, only to realize the next morning that it's a math exam. FML
Today, I proudly presented my research project in class that I've worked for day and night for 3 weeks straight. My teacher fell asleep. FML
Best of both worlds
Today, I was finally diagnosed with insomnia. The trouble is, because of my physical disability, I also have diagnosed chronic fatigue. Barely can stay awake during the day, can't sleep at night. FML
Under pressure
Today, after having pulled like three all-nighters and studying hardcore for months, when it came down to it, I couldn't solve even one question. I almost broke down. FML
Never. It never ends
Today, I'm doing homework but still can't submit it, mainly due to the homework being bombarded more than three times during the week, from eight subjects, all due in three days. I sleep barely two hours a day, still not finishing the work and getting shitty exam marks. I wonder when this cycle of work will end… FML

On the good side, you just found a cure for your insomnia.

Sure, this is an FML now, but one day we'll all feel privileged to have read such an early draft of the award-winning, industry-changing "Impact of Solid Mechanics on Abnormal Circadian Rhythms".

If only Hooke's Law were about hookers, it'd be a lot more titillating!

That's a great solid mechanics joke!

Studying for an exam often does that. I remember being sleep deprived during an exam, I literally slept during the exam and flunk the subject.

Change degrees. It gets worse in the industry. Trust me, I do solid mechanics as a living.

Maybe you should try studying right after you wake up. That way there's less of a chance that it'll just put you to sleep. Then like others have said, use it as a sleep mechanism once the class is over :)

On a more serious note, you should try talking to a health care provider about this; lack of sleep can have some pretty wonky affects on your health. Though before trying pharmaceuticals/sleeping pills, consider trying supplements such as magnesium, melatonin, etc. as they can be effective without such harsh side effects. Something to look into :)

This actually sounds stunningly familiar to me. It started with falling asleep in my materials class then moved to all other areas of life - classes, the bus, homework. A year and a half later, turns out I had a vitamin B deficiency. Of course, my issue was falling asleep not NOT falling asleep... Go to your doctor and have an extensive blood test. That should tell you if you're deficient in anything. Good luck OP!

Congratulations on your discovery. The cure to insomnia will benefit all of humanity.

Why is the "This could've happened to me" button missing here? I mean not all of us would've slept reading solid mechanics... Some of us could've slept reading economics, law, Shakespeare, Power Electronics, or any of the other thousands of subjects before an exam.
