Today, I went with my girlfriend to the airport for some much needed vacation time. We arrived on time but were stopped at the gate when they told me I didn't have the right passport. The plane left without me. My girlfriend did too. FML

Today, I went to the airport to start the amazing 3 week vacation in Costa Rica that I've been saving for and planning for more than a year. They wouldn't let me on the plane because my passport expires in less than 6 months. FML

Today, I found out that my passport expired two days ago, two days before my first vacation abroad. I only found out when the airline employee scanned it at check-in, looked at me with sympathy, and said, "I don't think you're going anywhere today." My friends are currently posting beach photos while I'm filling out passport renewal forms. FML

Today, I had to call the Australian Passport office to track my passport. Turns out they lost it in the mail. A week ago, I got my dream job as a flight attendant. Without a passport they won't accept me. I lost my dream job before I even started it. FML

Today, I picked up my passport, as my previous one was damaged in a car crash. As the teller warned me that a pattern of damaged passports would result in longer processing periods, she spilled her coffee - all over my new passport. I'm supposed to go overseas in a month. FML

Today, we had movers come in to take all of our stuff as the final step to our move to the States. We have our flight scheduled for tomorrow evening. Thing is, they accidentally took my carry-on bag without my knowledge. In that carry-on there was a little something called a passport. FML

Today, my purse was stolen. Too bad it had all of my money and my passport. My flight is tomorrow, and the embassy is closed until Monday. Guess who gets to stay in a foreign country with no money and no identification for the next three days. FML

1-Sometimes, there are delays in actually making and registering a passport legally. You could do it weeks in advance and there would still be a chance that it could be delayed before your trip departs.

While that is true, generally you are supposed to deal with it months in advance, just incase everything goes wrong. That being said it's still unfortunate as that's money / miles down the drain.

14 is absolutely correct. The application process flat out tells you it can take upwards of six weeks. You ALWAYS have to arrange passports, visas, and any other documentation as far in advance as you can. Furthermore, the website for passport applications includes a chart showing when there's highest volume for passports and suggests allowing for even more time. When that much money is involved, you deserve it for not taking the proper precautions.

I tried to apply for a passport last week, but they kept telling me that I couldn't obtain one! I kept asking and they kicked me out of the building!!! Last time I'm ******* going to chunky cheese's, so incompetent.
