Today, I called a suicide prevention hotline. No one picked up. FML
Collection
Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Classic been there, done that
Today, in a state of severe depression and fearing I might do the worst, I called my local suicide helpline. I was put on hold. FML
Talk to me
Today, I called the suicide hotline, only to get lectured by a very condescending man. I hung up and called back, only for the other line to pick up and hang up on me immediately. FML
You're at home here
Today, after years of struggling with poor mental health, my depression convinced me that no one would ever care enough about me to help if I reached out. I called the local suicide hotline anyway. They didn’t answer. Twice. FML
Waste of a phone call
Today, I called the suicide hotline after two months of recurring thoughts. I got put on hold by their machine, then was on call with someone who barely spoke English, got transferred to another building, so I was put on hold again, and finally got hung up on. I was already feeling pretty worthless, so thanks guys. FML
Some friends you've got there
Today, I wrote a post about how I was thinking of attempting suicide. Not one single person contacted me to see if I was alright. FML
Crisis
Today, I called the crisis helpline, and because my connection was cutting in and out for a moment, they hung up on me. When I called back, it was shift change, so they hung up again. FML
Today, a girl I've liked for several years gave me her number. Finally, I worked up the courage to call her. It was a suicide help line. FML
Don't know, don't care
Today, I realised that if I died, no one would care. I know this because when I called my partner distressed last night, he told me he needed to sleep and hung up in less than 45 seconds, and a friend told me to call lifeline. I haven’t heard from either of them since. FML
Old lady hotline
Today, I called the Suicide hotline. I dialled the number wrong and woke some poor old lady. She thought I was her son and kept asking me, "How come you don't visit anymore?" I told her I couldn't visit because of the Covid pandemic. I lied to an elderly woman I've never met. FML
Message in a virtual bottle
Today, I was feeling extremely depressed and worthless, so I decided to use the crisis chat. I told them I felt lonely and worthless, and had nobody to talk to. They never responded. FML

Owch, that's a kick to the balls. But don't let a phone line discourage you. Just keep swimming...

Do what Barney does, when he is sad. He stops being sad, and instead, becomes awesome. You should do this too

I'm guessing most of the commenters here have never suffered from Depression. You don't just snap out of it, it's a mental illness. It's not just "feeling sad" sometimes. There doen't even have to be a reason for it, sometimes it's simply a chemical inbalance in the brain that causes it. It warps your thinking, affects your logic, destroys your self-esteem and often takes years of hard work to get over it. It just pisses me off when people think those who are suicidal are "*******" or "attention seekers". It's just not the case. To the OP: Keep going. I've been there, so have others, and you can get through it. Time will always move on, you just have to cling on with everything you've got. No situation lasts forever. In the meantime, perhaps try therapy? It does often help a great deal :)

I don't think you really understand or appreciate the true nature of a mental illness. People that are affected by one can become overwhelmed with strong irrational emotions and thoughts. If you truly believe that someone would be better off dead over an irrational thought, then I'm sorry that you haven't had a chance to experience true compassion. I wouldn't be alive to tell you this had there not been people with the compassion to show me that my life was valuable.

Most of this I agree with, however #80 seemed to imply that depression and suicidal behavior are the same, which isn't the case. I have a feeling you know that, 80, but to clear it up for those who haven't gone through this, they are not the same. I have dealt with depression twice. I was fine for about a year between the two 'episodes' but each of those lasted two or three years. The first time I was suicidal. The second time, I felt that I deserved to suffer through whatever hell life was, and that killing myself would be a wonderful escape, but better than I deserved. And life someone said, It's a chemical problem. It's not that we don't value life, it's that we might not be capable of rational thought in regards to it.

So I guess this hotline works, you're still here ;P Just joking. What if you'd talk to your family, friends about it? Or get a therapy.

It's cus of people like my friends who get bored and prankcall said hotlines. However, if you were actually planning to kill yourself, you would have done so without seeking help. You'll be perfectly alright.

just because you're suicidal sometimes doesn't mean you continuously suicidal. A lot of people realise they have suicidal tendencies and so try to get help before they completely spiral into depression, or sometimes it's even after a failed suicide attempt.

I have a friend who works for our country's telecommunication company. She got a call from someone in charge of a suicide hotline once, saying their lines were not working and calls were automatically going to a message bank. The woman from the hotline was like "...this is NOT what we want our callers to reach".

I have to be honest and say that I don't have a problem with people killing themselves. The family deserves the heartbreak for not being in touch enough to know when something is wrong, and the suicidal person deserves to die for taking life for granted.
