Today, as every day for the past three weeks, my girlfriend's cat kept us up from 3:30am crying nonstop. We've tried everything, and even exiled my well-behaved cat to keep him company. Now she cries because she feels she's being punished. Starting around 4am. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Telepathy?
Today, my incredibly needy rescue cat - who knows she doesn't get to go into my bedroom at night - decided that she needed to wail and scratch the bedroom door from midnight until 5 a.m. Now that I'm awake, she's ignoring me because she knows I'm mad at her. FML
Raised by cats
Today, my baby will only stop crying if my evil-smelling, bad-tempered, violent, half-feral, half-psychotic cat climbs into her cot to sleep next to her all night, yet when I try to do anything like feed her or change her nappy, she cries like she’s being tortured, I just don’t understand. FML
HUMAN! I NEED ATTENTION!
Today, my girlfriend called me four times in a row at work. Worried, I stepped outside and answered the phone. Through tears, she screamed, "It's the cat!" Was he sick or hurt? "NO! He won't stop meowing!" FML
Needy furbaby
Today, my cat locked herself in the bathroom and screamed until she was let out, for what seems like the millionth time this week. It took me a while to realize she's doing it on purpose for attention. She is loved and cared for; I've never neglected her. Apparently, it's still not enough. FML
Human! I request petting!
Today, my cat has made a habit of waking me and my husband up every morning by meowing in front of our bedroom door until we get up. This morning, I finally got her to stop, so I went back to bed hoping to sleep in for a while… Only to be kept awake by my husband’s snoring. FML
Today, and every other night since my new neighbors moved in two weeks ago, their cat has been standing outside my house meowing constantly up at my window, where my cat keeps standing and meowing back. It's like a feline version of Romeo and Juliet, and I can't sleep. FML
Needy baby
Today, I have a cat with separation anxiety. By this, I mean whenever I go in another room and shut the door with her outside, she uses her head as a battering ram to try and break down the door. It's fun trying to sleep too. FML
Today, my only day off this week, my cat decided that she wanted feeding at 5am and wouldn’t stop meowing till I filled up her bowl. She then refused to eat it. FML
Jealousy
Today, I came home from a four-day trip. Apparently, my cat thought I was gone for good and is now very unhappy that I'm home. I know this because she's been positioning herself between me and my husband all night, and hisses every time I try to touch him. He thinks it's hilarious. FML
Catflap time
Today, our cat doesn’t care much whether she gets into my room or not. Except at about 3 a.m. each night. That’s the time she sits outside the door, meowing to be let in. FML

I'm going to take a guess that her cat is female and has not been fixed. She's probably in heat.

Maybe you need to spend more time with her. She might be feeling like she's not getting enough attention therefore waking you up to get you to pay attention to her. Try spending time with her before bed playing and snuggling and what not. That could help if you haven't tried it already.

They're really not though. I'm not sure why people think they are just big jerks. Domestic housecats are more closely related to their wild counterparts than domestic dogs are to theirs. They have such a strong natural instinct for survival that many times a housecat will become part of a feral colony (since cats actually are social animals) if left to their own resources. They can easily revert to wild living if they need to, and that of itself is pretty amazing. Since they have such an innate sense of predatory behavior, people need to appeal to that. Which means playtime. Cats are fun and deserve respect.

Alright, OP here to clarify a few things. Both cats are fixed. The girlfriend's cat (Ollie) is male, I definitely said "he" when referring to her cat and "she" (Ellie) when referring to mine. We tried playing with him to tire him out, gave him catnip a few hours before bed to make him crash, spray him when he cries, whole nine. We figured out he's a lot younger than we initially thought and may not have been weaned from his mother properly, as he kneads on everything. He's a very sweet cat, we ended up investing in a pheromone diffuser to calm him and it's worked well. I have also since invested in ear plugs, so checkmate, Ollie!

A change in behavior can be caused be something medically going on. If this is new behavior, he should be seen by a vet to rule out medical illnesses. From there, you can treat it like it is behavioral.
