Today, a friend located my stolen dog. It was sold to a family that has an autistic child. I was told by the police that I could have my dog back, but they think I am a terrible person if I do. FML

I did take my dog back. I have had Riot for three years, so he is a big part of my family. I have also started boarding him during the day or leaving him with a family member/friend. I am moving in a few weeks so hopefully, this won't be an issue that pops up again. Chip your dogs. It is a lifesaver. While I understand where the police officer was coming from (he has an autistic child) you don't sell a family member. Dogs have always been family to me. The kind of awkward part was the mother started crying, asking to buy Riot from me. She said he was so well behaved and they needed something to help their kid. She then kind of demanded I let her son come over to my house to play with Riot when he wanted to. I guess so she could tell her son that Riot was still his, but that he was just living with someone else. I told her no and said I didn't want to have contact with her again. She got mad. I don't think I left looking like a saint, but I am glad to have my dog back.

So you should feel bad for having your stolen pet returned? Just because the kid's autistic? No, screw that. Take him back, he's yours.

They can get a new dog. You've had this dog. You should get it back. If one their dog was sold to someone else they would definitely get it back. Dogs are family.

**** that. Get your dog back. That's a part of your family. **** the other family. They can just get another dog. I hope you got your dog back.

I doubt they knew the dog was stolen...thats just mean

Stealing the kid is called kidnapping and carries heavy punishment.

You cannot honestly compare a pet to a child. If you lose your pet, you're very sad, if you lose your child, you're broken for life.

@113: But some people do compare their pet to a child, and some are broken for life if something happens to their pet since they've formed a bond with it.

My dog, who I don't even like to saying I'm their owner because it puts their life T a lower level than mine which I see like Slavery, is like a daughter or close companion to me. If something happened to her other than living a long full life, which is the only circumstance I will accept her death, I will be broken. @113

#204 & #172 I can only assume that you don't have any kids. The love you have for your child should not compare to the love you have for your pet. If you were in a situation where you had to choose between saving your kid's life or saving your pet (ie. a house on fire), your natural instinct would be to go for your child. If you hesitate between the two, there is something wrong with you. I still get tearful when thinking about my pet who died 20 years ago but if I was to lose my child, my grief would be beyond comparison.

Not everyone wants kids.

I never said the contrary OP. I believe it's pretty obvious from my response to #39 that I think no one should compare the love a parent has for his child to the love someone has for their pets. If someone seriously thinks that losing your child is as painful as losing your pet, they need a reality check. I'm actually puzzled as to why this attracted so much downvotes, especially since I never contested the fact that you were entitled to get your dog back.

Maybe because you are saying that pets have less worth and their lives don't matter as much. It's like saying they are replaceable.
queerdragon 20
I think, 269, that loving someone and missing them shouldn't be put into categories. A parent is not special and the loss of a child is no greater than the loss of a friend, pet, parent. Loss is loss.

Damn I wish I could like your comment, OP.

please go get your dog back. this made me so sad

Take your dog back, they can get that exact colour and breed the kid won't even notice the difference
NickACD 27
That makes it sound like dogs are replaceable. They aren't, that's why I think **** the family because OP made a connection with her companion.

In this case, I think they're saying the kid wouldn't notice. OP has had that dog long enough to make a connection. If you buy the kid a different dog that looks the same, they probably wouldn't notice much. I hope OP gets their dog back.

Get your dog back OP. Who cares what they think, that's your dog and you have every right to what you own. Besides, it was stolen so it technically still is yours!

If they genuinely got the dog for the kid as a special needs child they would have got puppy from a breeder so they could guarantee temperament etc but they're using it as an excuse to keep the dog
demix_fml 32
Take your puppy back and don't feel bad!
PurpleMyth 28
Just because the kid is autistic he can have whatever he wants? It's not like you lost your favorite jacket. This is a living, breathing family member.
NickACD 27
Get your companion back. They should understand.
