Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Today, my father shot my fiancé. He's fine, but the wedding is off. FML
Today, my dad had a chat with my fiancé, telling him he can do better than me, and to think carefully before going through with our wedding. FML
Today, my fiancée decided to go on a "vacation." Our wedding is tomorrow. FML
Today, my fiancé, his mother, my father and I went out to celebrate my birthday and our recent engagement. After dinner, my father and future mother-in-law revealed to us that they had secretly been dating and were talking about also getting married. Anybody want cake? FML
Today, my dad, who lives hours away, called and told me he was getting married. Today. As in this evening. Guess I'm not invited. FML
Today, my soon-to-be mother-in-law decided that she is going to be in charge of planning my wedding. All decisions must be approved by her, and anything she doesn't like will be thrown out. She also wants to go on our honeymoon with us to make sure I don't "defile" her son. FML
Today, my fiancé's ex-wife thought it was perfectly acceptable to give herself a part in our upcoming wedding. She wants to "give" him away to me, the same way a father does to a bride. Apparently, I'm being unreasonable and selfish for denying her request. My fiancé told me to at least think about it. FML
Today, a week after my fiancé and I got engaged, his mother is already complaining that she isn't involved enough in the wedding arrangements. We haven't even set a date yet. FML
Today, it was my engagement party. All was going fabulously, until my fiancé's dad decided to give us a toast, and completely forgot my name in front of all my family and friends. I've been with his son for 7 years. FML
Today, my fiancé told me he wants to buy an engagement ring for his mother, so that she doesn't feel left out. FML

Is your fiancé upset about their father taking it over and that's why he wants to just go to Rio? I mean, it's just an engagement party, it's not really that important in the end. If it was your actual wedding, I'd be making noise. Perhaps discuss with your companion about what you both want and work with the FIL. Then make sure you put your foot down when it comes to the actual wedding.

How do you have a father-in-law if you're not married yet? Is this the father from your current marriage? I'm so confused!

If the father-in-law is footing the bill, then let him plan it.

As someone who lives near Reno--go down to Virginia City and ask the people at St. Mary's in the Mountains if you can get married there. It's a gorgeous spot with an old church, and you can rub it in the jerks' faces that you had such a fun vacation\wedding\honeymoon without them. (Plus Lake Tahoe isn't that far away...you can just drive or catch a bus up there and REALLY rub it in.)
