Math ain't easy
Today, as I struggle with dyscalculia, I set up some counters so I could knit up a perfect square. Turns out the counters actually made it worse. I have three failed attempts and I'm stuck on number 4. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Today, I got a big math test back. Good news: I can connect abstract ideas beyond what was taught. Bad news: I can’t do simple math, such as 30/-5. I failed. FML
Today, I was trying to put some new curtains up. I couldn't make sense of the instructions, so I decided to wing it. I spent a frustrating half hour fighting with it, and just seconds after I succeeded, the curtain rod gave way and slammed straight onto my head. FML
Today, I work at a craft store. One of the things we sell are wooden numbers. If I had a dollar for every time a random kid took all the 6's and 7's and lined them up across the floor, forcing me to stop what I'm doing in order to go put them back, I'd probably have more than $67. It's an almost daily occurrence. FML
Today, I failed a calculus exam because I simply was too burnt out to study for it. I have not wanted to even look at a math problem since the beginning of the year, and I procrastinate all day instead of doing work, and it leads me here, typing at 2 a.m. to random strangers while having to get up tomorrow at 7. FML
Today, I spent the whole day doing a 500 piece puzzle. The last piece didn't fit. FML
Today, I failed my trigonometry exam because my scientific calculator was on the wrong setting. FML
Today, I was playing a math game with a 4th grade boy (I'm a college graduate). I cheated during the entire game, and still lost 7 of the 9 rounds we played. FML
Today, I had to complete a simple math problem to submit a web form in order to show that I wasn't a spam robot. I got it wrong. I'm officially too bad at arithmetic to prove I'm human. FML
Today, I realized my brain has degraded so fucking much when I could only do one math question over the span of 24 hours. FML
Today, I spent 3 hours looking at a YouTube video on how to do Rubik’s cube. Even after being told how to do it, I couldn't finish it. I scrolled down the comments and read, "Awesome! I'm 10 and can do it in 3 minutes now!" I'm 28 and still can't do it, even with a tutorial. FML

Maybe knitting, or at least knitting this pattern, is not really the best hobby for you. Sometimes we use hobbies or crafts to build up the skills we want. More often we use hobbies or crafts that make us feel good about what we can do. There is a fine line between giving up too soon and continuing on a path that is not best for you. You need to decide if you are likely to overcome this problem or if you need a different hobby. My son was diagnosed as having a “learning disability in math” as they called it then. But his verbal skills were good. He ultimately settled on a career in which his math problems were not a limitation and matched his interests (security in his case). I am an engineer, on the other hand and my visual and basic math skills are probably better than my verbal skills. Neither is inherently “better” than the other. The smart path is to improve on the skills you have and find a career that works with your skills and interests.

Just cheat off your neighbor and you'll make at least 17%. It's makes sense that calculus is so hard, they name a learning disability for it.

I have dyscalculia, I tried to tell my math teacher when I was high school and he thought I was making it up. He didn’t believe it was an actual thing

So this one's mine. I'm actually really great at knitting, I've taught it to others, and my math wasn't actually wrong--turns out that I was using the wrong stitch for the method I was counting with (knit stitch, it turns out, doesn't gain height at the same rate other stitches do). It's still pretty funny\stupid. And now I know not to use knit stitch for something I want to have the same number of rows as number of cast-on stitches *and* be a square...
