Today, I went to dinner to meet my boyfriend's parents for the first time. I received a text message, so I pulled out my phone to check. Apparently, his parents have a "No phones at the table rule" and took my phone away until I could learn "proper table manners." FML

Are they one of those crazy families that sit in dead silence while they eat, too?

People are so quick to call OP a discourteous teenager, but the story didn't say that she was constantly texting and didn't pay attention to the family. The phone seemed to go off and the OP checked it, possibly to turn it off/put it on silent. It's not rude to simply check a phone when it goes off, especially if the OP said "Excuse me" first. Also, it was very disrespectful of the parents to confiscate the phone. Yeah, it's their house, but they have no right to take someone else's belongings. A polite request to put away the phone would have been just as effective.

I'm pretty sure the text could have waited until you got home... not very polite to do at a dinner table.... just saying.....

You should have excused yourself from the table to read the text.

On one hand it is pretty rude to use your phone at the dinner table, especially if you're trying to make a good impression. However they don't have a right to take your mobile. YDI anyway.

Wtf? They shouldve atleast warned you. Thats weird...

Ok, what he/she posted was different that "putting your hands down your pants" or "swearing in church". Don't compare those two with not warning her about a rule that could take her phone away.

well that's just rude... good for them.

YDI-that was rude no matter whose house you are at. It's just common courtesy to not answer your phone during dinner.

Get away from that!

My parents have the same rule. Because it is very disrespectful. But my parents won't go Nazi on someone and take their phone. Because it is understandable if you're just checking your phone or putting it on silent or whatever. FYL for them taking your phone. Two wrongs don't make a right. They should have just asked you to put it away. Lesson learned though OP!

Knowing she got a text, she should of asked if she could check her phone

MOST families with manners have a no phone at the table rule. How uncouth, YDI.
