Today, I went to dinner to meet my boyfriend's parents for the first time. I received a text message, so I pulled out my phone to check. Apparently, his parents have a "No phones at the table rule" and took my phone away until I could learn "proper table manners." FML

Are they one of those crazy families that sit in dead silence while they eat, too?

You should have known better to wait: it being your first meeting and wanting to make a good impression... Plus, I think that's just plain rude that people "have" to be so connected w their phone. However, your bf should have warned u too.

Wooow. What a drone, you are very rude for messing with your phone during a family outing, that you just met. But it is odd fo them to be controlling. They will be like that forever so goodluck.YDI

...She then gets her phone back to see it was her boyfriend saying not to use her phone at dinner.....

God, I gotta love the people who assume OP was going to text the person back. And the people who think that someone would only call if it was an emergency. Personally - I've never been in a situation like that - but I'd probably be one to text first, and then call. And who's to say that it wasn't important? I've had messages I've had to check right away, despite being in company, because of a particular situation. Maybe it wasn't an emergency, like someone dying or something, but for one reason or another, it was still important to respond.

although them taking the phone can be extreme she obviously learned a valuable lesson as many people who have guests wouldn't do that i call a bravo for them teaching a lesson. people are so worried about being nice sometimes a situation like this keeps it in their head forever. i don't care if my kids or there friends family etc come over i will ask them to always say please and thank you. the common and what do you say phrase to get it out of them is a lot like taking a phone away. sorry ydi

Should've turned it off. They're there to meet you, so the least you could do is give them in return is some undivided attention.

that's just proper table etiquette, same as not wearing a hat at the table or elbows on the table. you deserved that.
