Customer service
Today, at work, I was helping a customer over the phone. Another customer came and asked me a question. I let them know I'd be with them shortly. They then said "I really think you should hang up. The customer is always first." FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Today, while at work, I had to spend an hour and a half on the phone, listening to an old lady relive her entire day in excruciating detail. We're not allowed to hang up on customers, and she was extremely quick to dismiss all my attempts to steer the call back on topic. FML
Today, at work, due to a mix up, I had to call an answering service. I am also from an answering service. We got the problem fixed but I couldn't hang up due to company policy. She couldn't hang up either. We both had to get our supervisors for permission to hang up. FML
Today, while I was working customer support, a lady hung up on me mid-sentence, and I trailed off, saying, "…aaannnddd you hung up on me like a bitch." Turned out she was still on the line and had just accidentally hit mute. FML
Today, while working at my call center, I took a phone call. The guy on the other line just yelled "FUCK YOU!" twice at the top of his lungs before hanging up on me. But of course, the phone agent is always at fault. FML
Today, at work, I was calling customers to tell them that they had prescriptions waiting to be picked up. It was a long list and every time I reached an answering machine I left our number so they could call us back. When I was finished, the pharmacist told me I been giving out our fax number. FML
Today, working in customer support, I received a call from a woman who'd just been robbed. My supervisor asked what was taking so long; I told him that she was hysterical. He took my phone and told her to call back when she had her "shit together", then hung up. I take orders from this dude. FML
Today, while at work, a customer refused to speak louder, despite me asking her to do it several times. As a result, I took her order incorrectly. The customer then finally decided to raise her voice, but only to yell at me about my poor listening skills. FML
Today, I discovered that my work's new phone system automatically takes people off hold the very second you pick up the phone. I discovered this after picking up the phone and complaining to my workmates about the annoying customer I had on the line for a full minute, all while he listened. FML
Today, I was on the phone to a guy I really like from work. We'd been talking for about 2 minutes, when he said he was getting another call, and put me on hold. I was so excited to be on the phone with him, it took me a whole 15 minutes to realise he had actually just hung up on me. FML
Today, working in retail, I noticed a customer looking for an item, so I walked up to them and asked, "Is there something I can help you find?" He replied, "Did I ask for your fucking help?" FML

But you're helping a customer anyways! Some people feel so entitled when it comes to retail I hate it so much.

"a new corporate policy describes that call in customers come first, sir or ma'am." "I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience but I am unfortunately, contractually obligated, to give expert service to the customer calling in as a priority due to their new rule outlining (insert air quotes) a strong social media influence (end air quotes) the customer in person will think the corporate pencil pushers are completely brain dead, the person on the phone will think they are being specifically prioritized because of a false sense of empowerment and the impatient one in the store will feel less aggravated at you personally for having to wait a couple minutes and likely be more understanding when the phone call ends.

*I've never worked retail and have never been particularly comfortable in the majority of social situations* when I'm a customer, if a worker seems to be helping a phone-in customer, I try being as patient as possible, as the way I see it, the person on the phone hopped in line first before me and deserves a slight priority due to the "first come, first served" mentality. even though they aren't physically in line, the worker was helping them first and unless it's going to take a significant amount of time, they come first.

While I see the point you're trying to make, I've worked in multiple different areas of a very large Tech chain from in store, over the phone, or managing said positions. One thing that can get you fired in an instant is you telling a customer something like what you said. If it isn't the policy, and makes the company look bad, you will be hung out to dry.

I was also originally making a poor attempt at a joke. I know spreading stuff like that wouldnt keep anyone around for long. I wouldn't work retail anyway just because of people like in the OPs fml story and a lack patience in certain situations on my end.

I don't know why this ticks me off so bad

this happened to me ! i was like 3 ft away from the phone because they were transferring the phone call and i got stopped by a customer and let her know i needed to answer a phone call and would help her after. i was talking and holding the phone w. my ear bc i was also taking notes, my hands were full and then she appears again and shoves some shoes at me and says i need to find these in so and so. it was so rude

The customer is not always right. unfortunately you can't tell them to f#ck off. Instead you have to be kind and tell them to wait their turn and explain you are busy with another customer. I hate dealing with customers. won't ever do that kind of work again.

"The customer is always right" is the actual saying which we all know is bogus because, seriously, what is WRONG with that person?!

It’s a situation that can be difficult to manage because they both deserve your attention.

Yeah, and they deserve it one at a time, in the order which they approached OP for their help, be it over the phone, or in person. Your logic suggests I could walk into a store while you were being seen by a clerk, push in and demand to be seen as well, because I deserve their attention too. Also, I think this is the oldest re-post I've seen yet. 2 1/2 years? Seriously?

The person who said “the customer is always right” never met the customer.

okay, that makes me mad
