Busted
Today, my hateful mother-in-law showed up unexpectedly. I faked taking a phone call so the bitter old hag would leave me alone. She then pulled out her phone, called my number, and glared at me as my phone rang against my ear. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Today, I visited my in-laws, whom I thought I was on great terms with. I soon learned that wasn't the case when my mother-in-law yelled at me about how I've been abusing her for years. Ten minutes later, she hugged me and asked me for grandkids. FML
Today, and since we've had our baby, my mother-in-law started coming round more often, then bringing her stuff to stay overnight, then started claiming she lived here, and got hysterical when we told her she doesn’t. I had to pick her up and place her outside while she punched me in the head repeatedly. FML
Today, while I was sitting in the living room with my mother, my phone rang. She immediately exclaimed, "I'm not calling you! Why is it going off?" She was serious. My own mother doesn't believe people talk to me. FML
Today, my mother-in-law yelled from across the house for me to come quickly. She sounded frantic, so I rushed and asked what was wrong. She said, "Nothing." and that she just wanted to remind me that she hates my guts. She'll be living here with me and my wife for the next two months. FML
Today, I got a call from my mom's new husband. It lasted 3 minutes and those 3 minutes were of him telling me how sad I make my mom for just existing, how jealous I make her because I'm living a life she wished she was. Turns out, she told him to call me and say that because I have her blocked. FML
Today, I summoned the courage to call my abusive mother-in-law about her non-payment of the money I stupidly lent her last year. She replied, "Why don't you go deepthroat a cactus, then we'll talk about it, cunt." and then hung up on me. FML
Today, someone knocked at my door. I saw it was my Mom, so I flattened myself against the door and tried to be as quiet as possible. I pulled my phone out and almost had silenced it before she called and heard the ringtone through the door. I had to invite her in and hear the usual "get married and have kids." FML
Today, I was at a job interview when my phone started ringing. It was my mom, so I quickly hit "Ignore", which was probably for the best since she was obviously drunk. She left a voicemail in which she sang "Happy Birthday" to me. It's not my birthday. FML
Today, my mother-in-law took a phone message on the back of my marriage license. FML
Today, I needed to call my mom to get some info so I dialled the number on my work phone. Not 2 seconds after, my cellphone rang. I got super pissed off because I hate when people call me on my cell at work. It was me. I'd dialled my own number. FML
Feel like sharing it with the other FML users?

You should have looked her square in the eye and said "hold on I have another call", and answered it

I hate mother-in-laws who won't at least try to embrace their child's partner. It's icky how they try and keep control over a fully grown adult and don't respect their decisions. (unless of course the partner is abusive or their child is underage etcetc)

Maybe if you stop referring to her as a bitter old hag and using juvenile tricks to avoid talking to her, your relationship would improve.

my bfs mother and I were in a "competition" I refused to play. She blamed me for him moving out, not wanting to spend more time with her, and I was also blamed for him saying he wasn't sure what his religious beliefs were. I told him I wasn't going to compete with his mother and that the relationship we each had with him weren't the same. Everytime she would bicker about him not coming over I made it very clear that it was HIS choice. Whenever she gets too involved I let him know that it crosses a line with me (I'm a more private person) and that he needs to let her know that she can't butt in to our lives whenever or however she likes. meaning he nor I should be required to tell her what we are doing 24/7, when we will be back home (we live in another state), or where his money is being spent. Now that we've moved she realizes that it isn't me keeping him from talking to her, its his choice to deny the phone call. She's a much better person to talk to now. So moral of the novel is that you need to tell your spouse what is and is not acceptable to you. If you want a phone call or text before someone comes over to your house then that is okay and she should listen to your request. if not then ask that she not come over at all until she can follow the rules of YOUR home, just like you follow the rules at HER home.

That's why you never fake a phone call, unless you're going to put it on silent first.
