Today, I was again turned down by a potential host family on a student exchange site. Their reasoning was basically that since I'm American, I might do something to endanger my health, get hurt, and then sue them over my own stupidity. FML

A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Today, I fell down a flight of stairs at college. I was taken to hospital with a fractured ankle and had to call my parents to drive me home. They constantly made passive-aggressive remarks on the way home, because I'd "totally ruined" their plans to eat out at a fancy restaurant tonight. FML
Today, I got a letter from a hostel I stayed at saying they were going to sue me for leaving them a negative Google review. I was the victim of a $7000 theft crime there. They refused to call the police and ambulance when it happened, and they didn’t even give me my money I paid to stay there back. FML
Today, I was awakened by knocking on my door, only to find my parents standing there. Turns out, they booked two one-way tickets to visit me from another country. Their plan? I should scrap my upcoming 2-week vacation to hang out because they invested in this trip. Oh, and they didn't book a hotel. I'm 31. FML
Today, my parents threatened to take away my college funds. Why? Because I complained about my 10 pm curfew during break as a freshman in college. FML
Today, I was supposed to start my vacation in Italy. I guess not everyone heard that I canceled it due to health problems, because this morning I caught two of my "friends" unplugging my TV after breaking into my house. FML
Today, I found out that my parents don't know the difference between a foreign person and a deaf person. They've been yelling at our exchange student for the past 2 days. FML
Today, I was uninvited to our usual family Thanksgiving, as well as the rest of the holidays with my extended family. Why? They found out who I voted for. I won't say who, but according to my aunt, I'm to blame for putting their son's healthcare at risk. WTF? FML
Today, I almost got kidnapped. Again. FML
Today, on my family vacation, I tried to put my foot down and declare that my daughter would absolutely not be babysitting anyone's kids. Everyone got mad and made us go home. FML
Today, my parents told me that they're suing my best friend's parents because I broke my leg at their house. I've been begging and pleading and fighting with them not to but they won't listen. They keep saying that it's not personal and it's just a legal thing. Happens all the time. FML

There is not in country in this world that has never had problems with racial discrimination. And besides, what about black AMERICANS and Middle Eastern AMERICANS who want to travel overseas? Black people were never part of the anti-black racism in the 20th century. Being a black student, to say that I'm being discriminated against for being American is in no way hypocritical. Same goes for Middle Eastern Americans. You're also forgetting that America is not one person, but 312 million people, most of whom were not white southerners during segregation, and most of those who were are over themselves by now. In conclusion, just because someone lives in a country where racial discrimination used to be prevalent doesn't mean that they are free to be discriminated against.

I'm going to quote this again just because this is very true. One thing you see online from Germans who have visited the US is the complaint that some of the people joke about nazism. They complain and most people feel they are completely justified in doing so. Why? Because they are. Anyone who is treated unfairly has a right to be upset about it. The history of that country doesn't matter. And all countries see discrimination against smaller groups or groups from which some have committed terrorist acts. The US isn't the only western country where discrimination against arabs and middle easterners exploded after 9/11.
