Collection
Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Today, I asked my mom if I could borrow $20 since I don’t get paid until Friday. She responded with, “Why don’t you return those packages that arrived this week from your online shopping sprees?” FML
Today, I'm 36 years-old, living with my parents, in debt. My mom always wants to solve my problems by giving me money, which she later claims as "borrowed", so now I'm highly in debt with the bank… and her. FML
Today, I had to spend all of my money on textbooks even though my refrigerator is empty. Starving and frustrated, I called home to ask for money for groceries. My mom told me I could afford to skip a few meals. FML
Today, I found out that the $200 I reluctantly gave to my mother so she could rent a house was paid to a scammer. Now she wants to live with me, in my one bedroom apartment. FML
Today, my mom yelled at me because I refused to lend her money. The reason I won't lend her money? The last time I did, she and my dad went out and bought a Macbook and a new car instead of paying bills. Apparently, I'm being 'selfish' by keeping my own money and putting it towards university. FML
Today, I visited my dad. He gave the, "You live under my roof, you follow my rules" lecture since I didn't do my "chores". I moved out 3 years ago. FML
Today, my parents decided to finally kick me out of the house because they've gotten tired of seeing me "sleep around all day and being so lazy" whenever I'm home. I'm currently triple-shifting for 6 days a week. FML
Today, I called my parents from out of state to see if they would order me a pizza using their credit card online because I'm out of money. I haven't lived with them for the past year, and they still claim me as a dependent on their taxes. They said no. FML
Today, I'm broker than ever. I work a full time job but I STILL can't afford basic adult necessities. My mom keeps asking me to pay a bill that I can't afford (and has nothing to do with her) but she's been opening my mail, and questions my unpaid bills. I'm 36 and I can't afford to move out. FML
Today, my mom got drunk and told me to leave the house because "I've been mooching off her for too long". I'm 14 and now am sleeping at my friends house. FML

If you have enough disposable income and aren't planning on leaving home, it's not unreasonable for your parents to expect you to help with home expenses. It wouldn't be fair for you to be living it up while your parents work and struggle to make ends meet and pay the home expenses. If I were a parent having to say no to purchasing things I want, but my adult child living at home had tons of disposable income for online shopping, I'd have a lot of questions too. It's a very different question to if my child was going to school or trying to find a job but unemployed. And given that you reference only your mother, if she's been raising you on her own, without your dad's help, that goes double.

I let my adult kids live with me rent free, but they still have to contribute to expenses around the house in some way. I don’t mean contribute in just the financial aspect either, since expenses also cover the younger kids as well. If you have the extra income and can afford to have numerous packages delivered every week, contributing is something I would also do as well.

you're making a lot of assumptions there. I agree that it's up to the parents but just because the mom gave the reasoning doesn't mean she's a single mother. just because she buys things online doesn't mean she's not in school and working. I'm a student and I make 5 figures a year while living at home. yes I have a decent income but I'm saving for graduate school. also, let's not forget the younger generation buys most things online ESPECIALLY during the pandemic. I buy food clothes and books online. just because there's a lot of packages doesn't mean it's all disposable spending. I agree with your point but not your reasoning we don't know enough about the situation to judge that much man.

It kind of sucks suddenly having to pay for something you've been getting for free. Though if you're 18+ this request from parents isn't unreasonable.

The real question is why weren't you helping out? You're complaining that you need to be an adult. Kids today have zero common sense. The everyone gets a trophy generation.

you do realize it's your generation that raised the kids of today right? I don't agree with your point at all but if I did the fault would fall on your generation....
thatslifeiguess7 16
Nope I'm not that type of parent. I raised my kids the way I was raised

if that's your logic then my generation could blame the way our kids are raised on our parents generation once in adulthood your actions are your responsibility and no one else's so as an adult you should be an adult and be responsible

Shame on you for not having offered first.

She's right. If you can afford tons of packages you can afford to chip in.
