Denial

Today, during a job interview, I was offered a sandwich. I politely declined, explaining that I'm a coeliac and would probably get very sick. He said coeliac disease "isn't real" and that gluten-free eating is just a fad. I had to leave when he kept pushing me to accept it. FML

What a douche! I hate people like that! Better luck next time OP.

While I do tend to think gluten free eating is a bit of a fad it takes a special kind of stupid to think a coeliac is following a trend. FYL OP, there's more jobs out there!

Look at it this way, do you really wanna work for an idiot?

"I reject the reality and substitute my own"?

14- Sure, why not? Works for me! *Grabs his kid's Superman cape and dives off his roof top.* "Up up and awa-" THUD. Just about as effective. ;p

He is an idiot for not knowing the difference between the fad and a real medical condition! Anyway, even if it was a personal choice, not a real need, who is he to demand you change?? At least you won't have to work for the idiot

I moderated this one, and the part that made me say yes wasn't included in the final version; the interviewer was a Physician. He sounds like the doc I once knew who insisted Fibromyalgia was a fictitious disease, and also was such a firm believer in low carb/high protein diets that he tried to force his patients and most of the hospital staff to go one one.

@ 31 Thank you for letting us know that, it really changes the story! There are so many crazy doctors out there, it is a real shame because we trust them with our very lives. I have a great doctor now, but i had a total nightmare with some idiot doctor at my college who prescribed me a med that my chart clearly said i was allergic too. He gave me the generic so i didn't recognize the name and took it. Thanks doc...

There are quite a few "homeopathy and naturopathy" clinics here with their "physicians" with no formal training selling quackery mixed with traditional remedies. It's to get around the strict government health plan rules and make some cash, but their skills and knowledge set can be questionable at best, as they operate under the same limited oversight as acupuncture and massage. Op might be applying at that sort of place, run by an imbecile.

So many people bs about not being able I eat gluten. I'm not surprised he didn't believe you. All the people that pretend they can't eat it to try to cut down on carbs have ruined it for you.

Since gluten free has zero to do with low carb, I don't see the confusion, except in the minds of the truly clueless. I eat potatoes, rice, tapioca, millet, oats, amaranth and quinoa. Breads, pasta and wraps can be made from all of these. All are high carb foods.

@ 22 I am Paleo though and i eat some high carb foods like potatoes but never bread. While i would refuse to eat the sandwich too (bc who wants such a controlling boss!) I could eat bread and be totally fine :) There are a lot of Paleo's out there so i could see a confusion being possible. He is still a jerk though

I hate people that fake illnesses. My girlfriend, she has truly just crippling ADHD. She can spend an hour trying to write an essay and turn out three sentences. I've seen her grades go to hell over it, and she is one of the smartest people I have ever met, because our school tells her to go to hell. Their reason is that so many of their students have faked ADHD for the doubled SAT time that they completely fail to acknowledge it as a condition anymore. I despise people that fake illnesses. Ultimately all they do is screw over people with actual problems. Its not so much the equivalent of stealing handicapped parking spots as it is to yank people off their wheelchairs so they can take them and have a better time standing in line.

Cuz people that lie about gluten sensitivity are idiotic. It helps them to avoid bread, which is the easiest to access carb.

tehdarkness 21

*to eat gluten... Typing on iPhone sucks.

Know what you mean, I just call it a wheat allergy. Even the clueless tend to understand that.

Coeliac is the correct spelling if you aren't a witless article writer on the internet.

TheDrifter 23

Odd, Android autocorrect adjusts it to celiac. Coeliac doesn't register as a real word, though I see it spells that way a lot. Regional difference in spelling?

You should have eaten the sandwich and gotten sick in his office. Are we talking farting? Diarrhea? You won't get the job, but at least you'll change his belief in the disease.

with celiac its typically violently throwing up and feeling like your entire digestive system is on fire:/ good idea though

@ 37 Some people have it so bad that eating a tiny bit of gluten could warrant a hospital visit

perdix 29

#41, cool!! If she can puke all over his desk (bonus points for getting his keyboard or mouse), that would be a real "convincer."

Coeliacchic93 21

@41 I don't puke but I do get violently ill. there are so many different symptoms though so while there are common symptoms most people are different. when I was diagnosed we figured out I had about 27 separate symptoms.

This conversation would have been so ******* illegal in the US! First, you never reveal personal medical information to potential employers. But, even if you are dumb enough to spill the beans, it's illegal to discriminate in hiring based on disability. We often get made fun of for being too litigious, but in cases like this, we are ahead of most of the world.

Well lets be glad you aren't going to work under that asshole! I've got Celiac, too. I can't stand when people assume you're just another health junkie :/
