Man or woman?

Today, I came home and found my desk devoid of all paper. Turned out my mom dropped by and wanted to surprise me by cleaning up my work area. She threw away over 7 months worth of irreplaceable original sketches, notes and storylines, thinking they were worthless. My job is a full-time artist. FML

Replace her birth control with Viagra.

lol and get her a vibrator and give it to her in front of her friends

daaaaaaamn.
i'm really sorry.
you never throw away an artists' papers

#2 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:08am by tonia

That really sucks ass. You should have a portfolio or something to keep that kind of stuff in you know?

#3 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:09am by under_estimated

OH SHI-

#4 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:09am by ILIEKGIRLS

Oh my god. That's rough... Is your mom actually delusional though? Possibly mentally challenged? Did she throw away your drawings as a child? Jesus. You definitely did not deserve this one. Condolences...

#5 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:09am by girlnamedkris

Pretty carless of her.

#6 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:11am by kariemika

Your mom has a key to your place? How old are you?

#7 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:13am by rrjr010

Okay, I read something similar to this, but hey, it does happen.

I'm sorry though. Why wouldn't she have known better? If you're an artist, she would know. She could've just sorted it. A great rule to follow is never throw away other people's stuff if they know nothing of it first.

#8 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:13am by redbluegreen

Sounds more like sabotage to me.

This one really bites for you.

#11 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:20am by 24788

Oh - that really bites. My sincerest condolences, I've had that happen and I know how much of a setback it is. I think it's time to change the locks.

#12 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:21am by phantomdonut

My stepmom does this to me all the time. So much, that I've had to pay her to drive me to Home Depot so I could buy a lock and key for my bedroom door. It really sucks.
Do you remember what at least some of it was? :/

#13 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:29am by suckstobeyou3

gotta say it.

Why would your mom have a key to use at your place unless it was for emergencies only.
Why would she think it is alright to go through you stuff.
Does she not know that no matter what she thinks of your work,
she has no right to touch it or throw it away.

Fell free to show her this comment.

#14 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:31am by nodbor

That sucks. I hate when people go through my stuff and "clean" without asking.. Always scared something like this will happen.
Good luck drawing it all again D:

#15 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:32am by Arinwyn

Ughh, my mom does the same thing! She thinks she's doing me a favor when she throws out my notecards for a research paper >_>

#16 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:36am by Avenging_Angel

are you a story board artist?

#17 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:36am by ZiggyMorrison

Maybe she doesn't like the idea of you being an artist. Either way, FYL.

#18 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:36am by uneekfreak16

What a massive bitch. She could have at least asked you if you needed the drawings and files. Fuck man, you have my sympathy.

#19 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:38am by Harlei81

That sucks. I'm sorry.

#20 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:43am by dmmd8686

Damn! - I am sorry to you
My mum did this to me once and I am a semi-professional writer. It broke my heart to lose that much for quite a while after.

#21 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:44am by dirtyhippie

That's why you move out and get your own house.

#22 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:47am by Essentials

Time to go dumpster diving!! :)

#23 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:48am by rustyrox

@ #22

The fact that the OP said his mom "dropped by" seems to imply that he does, in fact, live apart from her.

#24 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:49am by dmmd8686

Oh my gosh. I'm so sorry.

#25 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:50am by bumblez

@ #7

It's pretty common for parents to have keys to their kids' places (and vice versa). You know, for emergencies and things. I'm guessing you don't have your own place judging by your comment.

#26 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:52am by dmmd8686

My mom used to do that to me, too. Doodles and sketches on crappy printer paper (never waste the good stuff for scribbles) would get tossed, but they were concept art for projects I had gotten hired onto!

Then I moved 3,000 miles away and this hasn't been a problem since.

I'm so sorry for you. FYL for sure. :(

#27 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:56am by Leptailurus

I'm an artist and I know for a fact that my mom would never throw any of my sketches - no matter how sloppy - away without asking me first. I'm really not sure if I believe the OP.

#28 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:58am by IKnowBest

All parents are controlling assholes, there's no other reason to create a creature you can legally control for 18 years. Why would you give her a key when you can finally be rid of her for good?

#29 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:58am by lyndis

She doesn't your know your job? :|
But yeah, moms! who knows the way they think! :))

#30 - On 06/08/2009 at 4:00am by urbwzrd

I've had similar happen - nothing so severe though. But like I had papers I had no use for in a pile, and I had my study guides in with my notes, only to find my study and guides were thrown away and my junk papers were saved by someone who had no business touching either

#31 - On 06/08/2009 at 4:04am by cxal

This made my heart sink just reading it! As an artist, I know the pain of losing your valuable work because of the ignorance of other people. My Mom threw away 7 notebooks worth of beautiful writing for a future comic book series just because they looked old, the pages were getting crinkly, and the ink was fading. I'd planned to retype up everything in those notebooks once I was no longer pulling my hair out about my High School finals. I can't remember over half of it.

I really hope you called her out for this. That was inexcusable. Cleaning your house is fine, but anyone's work space should be left alone! I really hope your memory is better than mine in terms of recovering the storyline parts of your projects at least!

#32 - On 06/08/2009 at 4:10am by Luckster

#29: I'm sorry you had a bad childhood, but not everybody hates their parents as much as you seem to.

Also, good intentions are fine and all, but if you screw somebody over that much you really have to take responsibility. I hope your mom made it up to you somehow.

#33 - On 06/08/2009 at 4:13am by mezentius

wait, she didn't know that you're an artist? she needs to get common sense =/

This is why people shouldn't tidy other people's work space... What looks like a mess to one person is a logical filing system for another person. I clean my parents house and while I sometimes put things in the wrong place I never throw anything out except things like chocolate wrappers and crisp packets. It's not the place of the cleaner to throw things out.

#36 - On 06/08/2009 at 4:21am by catatonicsleep

Hirro, read the FML again....the Mom "Dropped by", implying that they have their own place and she has a spare key.

#37 - On 06/08/2009 at 4:22am by Luckster

Yeah, #34 said it... how is it possible that your mum doesn't know what you do for a living?

#38 - On 06/08/2009 at 4:24am by Emika

Ouch!! Could you do a little dumpster diving to see if you can recover any of it? If the papers are crumpled, maybe you can try to reproduce them.

#40 - On 06/08/2009 at 4:35am by dyingstart

Casual intentions, terrible outcome, classic FML. Such a rarity these days, with people being fags and posting YDI stories only. Hope you managed to get it sorted somehow.

#41 - On 06/08/2009 at 4:36am by jimzy

don't you just love when parent's do that :/

#46 - On 06/08/2009 at 4:45am by IKnowBest

Aww, man that was real shitty of her. From one artist to another, you have my sympathy. It's a pain in the ass trying to remember parts of storylines you worked on then lost.

Think it might be time to either change the locks for move further away.

#47 - On 06/08/2009 at 4:46am by xThatRandomGirlx

That really sucks. I feel bad for you now.
My parents cleaned my room when I was at summer camp back in 5th grade. They did not throw anything really important out. But since then I have a strict "no touchy the desk" policy with my parents.

#48 - On 06/08/2009 at 4:48am by spillproof

Aww she was trying to be helpful. But p'haps have a word with her about how you appreciate the gesture, but in future not to touch your work stuffs without permission

#49 - On 06/08/2009 at 5:24am by unistudentb

You have NO idea how torturosly I would kill my mother if she did that. I'm a novelist and SHIT would I kill.... I feel for you dude.

#50 - On 06/08/2009 at 5:25am by RanaElaseim

That's a tad odd that your own mother wasn't aware of your full-time job. Or is she that dumb? Sorry.

#51 - On 06/08/2009 at 5:26am by Phallus

Oh and #43, fuck you. Maybe you should get an actual brain. Art business is good money in the right place, and judging by the FML that was probably tens of thousands of dollars worth of work.

#52 - On 06/08/2009 at 5:27am by RanaElaseim

Wow... just wow. FYL and F your mom's life for being so stupid.

#53 - On 06/08/2009 at 5:33am by xmusik

i created an account just to comment this. my mum does that all the time with my documents, work anything and everything that isnt hidden from site. even if its in a stack of papers neatly placed on a table it still has the risk of going. it makes me rage so much. i feel ur pain...

#54 - On 06/08/2009 at 6:05am by mickyblueeyes

What the hell? Doesn't your mom know what you do for a living?

#55 - On 06/08/2009 at 6:13am by IllegalLight

Sue her for any money you may have lost from what she did. It's harsh but she is an adult, and when she does something like that she has to accept the consequences.

#56 - On 06/08/2009 at 6:15am by Ra

Damn I feel sad for you OP. FYL indeed. I don't know why 133 twats decided that YDI.

#57 - On 06/08/2009 at 6:18am by barlessprison

Wtf was she thinking? >_> Mothers

#58 - On 06/08/2009 at 6:18am by Kingofnothing85

Ugh, this is why I'd never get a maid cause no one really ever knows what to throw out and whats important. My desk is MY organized mess and i hate when my mom tries to clean it. Im sorry OP.

#59 - On 06/08/2009 at 6:25am by krisFrAnHeehar

Dude, that's the suckiest thing ever.

#60 - On 06/08/2009 at 6:30am by m5matt95

#61 - On 06/08/2009 at 6:32am by pog0

Change your locks. The woman's a menace.

#62 - On 06/08/2009 at 6:38am by aback

#43, being an artist is a real job..

Seriously, that sucks fyl :(

#63 - On 06/08/2009 at 6:52am by vipera_23

Omg I absolutely hate it when people try to clean my room. They always throw out important stuff. That's why I have made it clear to them to never try to clean my room

#64 - On 06/08/2009 at 6:58am by lives_ppl

I agree with #7. The whole point of having your own place is the freedom and independence.

Regardless of how messy or whatever it is, thats how i want it. when i really want a room clean it will be.

even if my mom asked for a key she wouldnt get one, id give one to my friends first. And if she did get her hands on a key, id be at home depot 20 mins later, buying new locks. cause if she "got her hands on one", it means she was trying too hard. Gl bro.

LOL @ #43. It's harder than a "real job". You don't only have to be intelligent, you have to be creative and diligent. In some cases, even a genius. Get your facts straight kid.

#65 - On 06/08/2009 at 6:59am by MrZach

my mum did that once by accident to my course work,
very frurtrating but cant really say anything.

#66 - On 06/08/2009 at 7:28am by akiro525

>:l make her go dumpster diving.

#67 - On 06/08/2009 at 7:32am by Tori_xoxo

#43 you're an idiot, who do you think animates movies who puts in CGI affects in almost every film out there? Artists, so don't diss the job!

OP I am so sorry as a fellow artist I can understand how frustrating it is when parents don't (try to) understrand your work. Once I made a a wonderful sketch of my father for Father's Day, the only thing I couldn't get right was the teeth. After I gave it to him, he through it out the next day because he didn't like how he looked in the picture.

Hopefully you could still dig your work out of the trash to salvage it. Good luck!

#68 - On 06/08/2009 at 7:37am by illeyad

I remember my mom threw out several hours worth of homework while cleaning my dorm room once, that sucked bad enough.

You, however, should look into how much money was lost and tell her she is paying for it. If she wont, you can sue for it. You should also go to her house every day and randomly throw things out.

I would also say push her down some stairs but I wont.

#69 - On 06/08/2009 at 7:40am by mrdblq

^^^^
Hehe. :D 69.
O_o

#70 - On 06/08/2009 at 7:47am by Tori_xoxo

my mom does that sometimes too. she decides to throw away all of my school papers and take stuff out of my room that she wants, which is really frustrating. but what your mom did was so much worse than anything that has happened to me. i am very sorry for you losses and i hope that your mom will understand that what she did was inexcusable and rude.

and dont listen to 69 when it comes to throwing out some of her stuff. you don't want to stoop so low.

#71 - On 06/08/2009 at 7:55am by kcslgvr

I too have suffered an overzealous "helpful" moron parent. I had a thriving little online business in high school. She raided my box of stock and threw out a bunch of stuff she thought was rubbish. Which I had already sold... Change your locks. I'd never give mine a key in a million years. FYL dude.

#72 - On 06/08/2009 at 8:30am by calikit

1st: Change the locks. 2nd: Bill your mom for the work lost, so she knows exactly how much it cost you and what it was worth. And she'll finally realize what you do for a living.

#73 - On 06/08/2009 at 8:39am by jonnymohio

that's awful. your mother had no business doing that, especially since it wasn't even her house. my place is forever cluttered with papers and such from my husband - writing, drawings, school work, and so on, and it is maddening that he leaves it lay everywhere but i would never dare throw any of it away without asking. i just stack it up on the desk. what does get me though, is when he has the nerve to complain about the mess around the place when i'm basically not allowed to clean up his shit.

#74 - On 06/08/2009 at 8:54am by fretforyerlatte

I know she meant well... but shit, I would have the hardest time not finding her, and yelling at her until i felt better.

#75 - On 06/08/2009 at 9:10am by DankJemo

I can't believe I am saying this, but YDI. I am an artist myself. I am also very lazy, but even I take the time to put drawings somewhere safe, like a binder or portfolio

#76 - On 06/08/2009 at 9:12am by Icalasari

Your mom is either an idiot or hates you working as an artist and knew exactly what she was doing.

#77 - On 06/08/2009 at 9:13am by grlwitperlEring

Your mom's a bitch. Wow. I'm so sorry. Just remember - what goes around, comes around =]

#78 - On 06/08/2009 at 9:14am by change_we_need

Does your mom know you are an artist? I am one too and my mother is scared to touch any of my work.

Either way, that REALLY sucks! FYL for sure.

#80 - On 06/08/2009 at 9:21am by Tarnag

this is terrible! i know your mom was just trying to do you a favor, but really, she should never have thrown out things of yours without asking you first. she could have just cleaned your desk and placed all the papers in some boxes or something. i hope things get better!

#81 - On 06/08/2009 at 9:23am by abrodyisHOTT

i would have killd her

#82 - On 06/08/2009 at 9:24am by whatssofunny

#2, you never throw away ANYONE'S papers without asking. duh

#83 - On 06/08/2009 at 9:26am by spirited_away33

drop kick her down an elevator shaft

#84 - On 06/08/2009 at 9:33am by ericpowpow

She better pay for all the money you lost out on.

#85 - On 06/08/2009 at 9:46am by Osakhomen

I agree with #56 and (part of) #69: she has, whether on purpose or not, deprived you of a very great deal of money which you depend on. You would be more than justified in (fairly) calculating the monetary worth of what she threw out, and holding her legally responsible for reimbursing you for that loss, regardless of whether she's your mother or not. My parents don't come to my work and try to get me fired; yours have no right to throw away your livelihood either. I sympathize and wish you the best of luck.

#86 - On 06/08/2009 at 9:46am by Shunnabunich

Kkh--... my mother goes through my things all the time, to "clean up"... meaning "throw everything that's bigger than a quarter or smaller than a stapler away". Including all the jewelry I make. That's why I learned to hide them in empty Pocky boxes...
When she goes on one of her cleaning sprees, I flinch every time she even looks at a pile of my papers. Something similar to this has happened to me several times.

Might I suggest getting an individual lock for your study - or wherever your desk is?

#87 - On 06/08/2009 at 9:54am by Kylias

either your mom really hates you, or she knows nothing about you and the kind of work you do...

all it takes is a 5 minute conversation to explain to her that the drawings are your job, and for her not to touch them

how old are you anyway?

i still live with my parents, but i taught my mom that when i was like 16...

#88 - On 06/08/2009 at 10:18am by LyuboLove

Horrible!
I'm so sorry for you!

My mom's a similar type. At least she never threw things away.

But when I went on vacation, she came around and "cleaned" my house. I couldn't find a damn thing.
First I called her to ask where she'd placed each single item, but that didn't get thru. I had to tell her to never touch my stuff again. She doesn't anymore.

#89 - On 06/08/2009 at 10:39am by kobold

Now you need 2 go2 ur moms house, & clean house. Eye4 an eye lol

#90 - On 06/08/2009 at 10:58am by Capnstinkfoot

Why are some mothers such busy bodies?! I feel for you man.

#91 - On 06/08/2009 at 10:58am by atomicmrpelly

That will teach the bitch ...

#92 - On 06/08/2009 at 10:59am by LesYeuxDeDario

That's so bad.. How could anyone be so stupid to do that knowing your career? So sorry that happened.

#93 - On 06/08/2009 at 11:31am by lovesucksxxx

AWFUL MOTHER IS AWFUL.

#94 - On 06/08/2009 at 11:34am by InfectedWithDrew

#76, I commend you on being able to be organized like that, but I have a few friends who work in graphic design, and they are NEVER that put together. Their workspaces have drawings and notes covering the walls, in piles on their desks. It's their organized mess, they work better in it. This doesn't make them lazy or deserving of their hard work being thrown out, it's just how they work; they have their stuff everywhere. In their own space, that shouldn't be a problem.

I haven't met any artists who feel the need to organize and file all of their works, especially works in progress.

#95 - On 06/08/2009 at 11:56am by philcrim

0_0 doesn't your mom know you're an artist? i'm an artist too and my mom wouldn't dare to throw out any papers and i was raised as an artist so she knows. most moms of artists would know that, what's wrong with yours? lol but maybe she didn't think of it and was only thinking about making you happy.

#96 - On 06/08/2009 at 12:01pm by maggy

I'm a full-time artist too and I think I'd kill myself if this happened to me.

Though, uh, at least my mum knows that I'm an artist and NOT to touch all the shit I have lying around.

#97 - On 06/08/2009 at 12:04pm by thequeenofscots

I wouldn't blame you if you were pissed :/ Heck, I wouldn't blame you if you started yelling your head off at her.

"Artist" isnt a job, its a hobby!

#99 - On 06/08/2009 at 12:17pm by Tehalon

Look on the bright side, I think you found a client who really likes your work, since she just bought 7 months of it.

#100 - On 06/08/2009 at 12:18pm by RuralNinja

Wow, I would be pissed. How do you not know that an artist's papers are important!?

#101 - On 06/08/2009 at 12:20pm by that_one_dude

Damn, thats pretty gutting.
Oh and #97 you're a douche.
Who made you king of what is and what isn't a "real job"?

#102 - On 06/08/2009 at 12:22pm by ChristianHunter

76, no one has to put their sketches in a portfolio to protect themselves against zealous parents who come over unexpectedly and clean out a work space. For some people, sketches out in the open IS organization. Everyone's mind works differently.

#103 - On 06/08/2009 at 12:28pm by imkendra

#99 you're an idiot. know what you're talking about before saying it

#104 - On 06/08/2009 at 12:46pm by maggy

#43 and #99, I bet you the OP earns more money than you do. Thus making it a proper job. As #68 said, artists animate movies and so on. It's a good job to have, and it's a more difficult job to do - anyone can work in an office 9 to 5, but artists have a real talent.

OP, your mother's a douche. I reckon you should go round to hers, and clean out all of her favourite stuff, see how she likes that.

#105 - On 06/08/2009 at 12:54pm by OMGQueenB

not going to say ydi but you could have scanned your drawings into a computer so you would have a digital copy

#106 - On 06/08/2009 at 12:57pm by ryan__h

You should have already told your mom not to throw you stuff away. Sounds like your mom needs you clocks cleaned.

#107 - On 06/08/2009 at 1:17pm by RodeHard

Look up parental enmeshment.
And get a good counselor.

#108 - On 06/08/2009 at 1:19pm by NonchalantSavant

That's just devastating. All of your hard work! :(

I know how it is, I get pretty attached to my work, too... but this was all you had for your JOB! Ugh. Best wishes in trying to undo some of the damage.

#109 - On 06/08/2009 at 1:28pm by love_jd13

That does suck, I'm sorry.
My mom always moves my car out of the way, and in the process, takes things out. Then one day, she took out the donation money that I was collecting, and almost threw them out with her papers, so I know the feeling.

#110 - On 06/08/2009 at 1:29pm by HeyyTonie

ugh, that's gotta hurt. Seriously, though. Dumpster dive. It's the only way. FYLx2. :(

#111 - On 06/08/2009 at 1:38pm by Stacia

Ah, I'm sorry about that. You should keep your desk locked and all your sketches and storylines in a private place. Also, tell your mom not to go through your things again.

#112 - On 06/08/2009 at 1:41pm by Lightning_Swing

#99, when something you put effort into provides you with money for you to live on, that's a job. When someone makes statements that have no basis in reality or fact and claims they are true, they're an imbecile.

#113 - On 06/08/2009 at 1:43pm by Lonely_Lez

Wow, some of you are real assholes.

The OP shouldn't have to put everything away in his/her own PLACE! Their mom should have known better. It is bad enough that should stop by, let herself in, and just decide to clean, but to actually throw shit away!

It sounds like the mom needs a hobby if she has that much time on her hands.

To the others, an artist is a real job you dumbasses!

To the OP, I sooo soo sorry that that happened to you! You definitely need to have a talk with your mom about boundaries.

#114 - On 06/08/2009 at 1:58pm by patray_angel

Ugh, this sounds like something my mother would do. She's given up on trying to clean my room, but when my room was gutted to redo the floor and walls, all my stuff was in the living room. She'd constantly try to "clean up" my stuff and, in the process, move it or throw away any misplaced sketches or sculptures she got her hands on, and she would always do this to me when she thought I wasn't home to catch her at it. I flipped the hell out on her when she tried to toss a sculpture that I'd been working on, which she had already damaged severely, setting that project back weeks.

The worst part is that when she threw away or moved MY STUFF, she would then complain when I couldn't find anything. When SHE'S the one who moved it and refused to tell me where she put it.

Also @106: A digital copy is a copy. The mom threw away originals, which by definition are not recoverable without redrawing them or dumpster diving.

#115 - On 06/08/2009 at 2:08pm by Lythiaren

I'm sure it's been said before, but oh my God that's so terrible! = ( As a writer, I understand - there's no way you can get that stuff back. 7 months?? I would be praying the garbage didn't get taken away yet

#116 - On 06/08/2009 at 2:12pm by mynameisnotjudie

Fucking moms are retarded, I don't get why people think they're doing you a favor for cleaning stuff for you, they usually throw away lots of stuff you need, my dad at least takes papers and either asks me if I need them still, or leaves them if I'm not there in a pile so I can decide

#117 - On 06/08/2009 at 2:38pm by Brolin

I know somebody who doesn't have a key to your place anymore.

#118 - On 06/08/2009 at 2:44pm by ihfpfml

artist isn't a real jobs anyway.

#119 - On 06/08/2009 at 2:53pm by Ughsucks

Why would you give your mom the key to your house. Are you an idiot?

#121 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:08pm by Travel

#120, you didn't read my whole post. A scan IS a digital copy of something. A copy is still not an original.

#122 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:17pm by Lythiaren

a. I'm sure his mother knows what he does. My mother knows that I'm an artist and still gets annoyed because I have a ton of paintings and old sketchbooks. Fortunately, she knows well enough to just nag me about it over the phone instead of tossing it out herself.

b. How is "artist" not a real job? So people working full time for ad agencies, animation studios, video game companies and museums just goof off all day?

#123 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:17pm by pleasetryagain

I hate when mothers do that. Mine is already trained, haha! I study Graphic Design and I often have a mess on my table... now she knows she can't throw anything away, even if it looks like garbage -because it's probably my next assignment- XD. I had to educate the cleaning lady though... I found her putting pieces of my assignment in a trash bag once... now she's to scared of touching anything that remotely looks like college work. :P

OP, hope you've already changed you lock!

#124 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:20pm by punksafetypin

your mom's retarded..

#125 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:50pm by tapesculpture

I live by myself and my mom has my spare key. If things are going rough for me, and I'm busy with projects (I'm an artist as well), my mom is kind enough to come down and clean my kitchen or whatnot. Who's going to say no to free cleaning, right?

But the work space of an artist (or anyone for that matter) is a place to stay away from. OP, it's great to have a caring mom, but damn... that's the worst luck ever. FYL for sure.

#126 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:51pm by fortunesque

"Why would you give your mom the key to your house. Are you an idiot?" Wow 121, you must really not like your mom or something, the rest of us trust our parents. Except when it comes to art, then they are clueless what is good and what isn't. Yeah, I would have been very, very pissed off about that. Sorry, at lease people agree that this sucks. I at least hope you kept some of the ideas, or maybe sketches somewhere else?

#127 - On 06/08/2009 at 3:51pm by Sorrel

Uhh, hello??? How being an artist, NOT, a job? Huh? ANYONE can do an office job. Artists get paid fucking big time. They create the cartoons, the comic books, the paintings, the movies. So being an artists does not only involve painting things, no. You do a lot of things. And when someone pays you to do something, that is called a job. Jackasses, like really are you that dense? Gahh. People are so idiotic.

OP: Uhhh, I hate when my mom throws out my stuff. Like I never throw anything of hers out but she does it to me, and she comes in my room going through everything. RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME! But what YOUR mom did, I'd be so upset. My mom also threw out a notebook of poems & lyrics. Angry. I hope you take away her key, or atleast let her know, unless there is an emergency NOT to go into your home again; without you there.

#128 - On 06/08/2009 at 4:07pm by ohhhhshizzz

Time to go dumpster diving. Seriously though, if you want them back you better hurry up!

#129 - On 06/08/2009 at 4:12pm by icanhazstapler

who clicks YDI for this one?
OP: that sucks XP

#130 - On 06/08/2009 at 4:27pm by greeneggsnsam

Damn that sucks :( I draw too, and I make sure my whole family knows that if they throw my stuff out I'd crush them. If they find anything of mine they just leave it in my room. FYL.

#131 - On 06/08/2009 at 4:50pm by Raptorbane

Your mom is a fucking idiot.

#132 - On 06/08/2009 at 4:51pm by grapenutsrbt

Get a lock

#133 - On 06/08/2009 at 4:55pm by Guyoverhere

omggg... that's stressing me out just thinking about it T_T i'm an artist, too, i can imagine how horrible that would be.. i'm so sorry. i hope you can redo at least some of the sketches--i know once i've drawn something once, it's stuck in my memory and i can usually recreate it

#134 - On 06/08/2009 at 5:06pm by Ultraviolet

#133, the OP said that his mother "dropped" by which implies that he has his own place which means that he does have a lock. His mother probably had a copy of the key for emergencies.
#119, "artist isn't a real jobs anyway."
Not only is this comment very ignorant since artists earn money for creating cartoons, movies, comic books (etc...) which technically makes it a job but your comment is also grammatically wrong.

#135 - On 06/08/2009 at 5:22pm by ladykitty

First of all, your mom sucks. You're an adult and she comes over to your place and just throws things away? How would she like it if you went through her linen closet- or workspace - and threw stuff away, too? That is the worst invasion of privacy I've heard of in a while.

Second, you should ALWAYS have copies of everything you've done. Not only in hardcopy, but on discs, zip drives and many duplicate ways. You never know if the roof is going to leak all over your things, or if the computer is going to crash. I really hate your mom was so horrible, but you absolutely were negligent in not having copies.

I speak from experience, considering I'm a budding author, and photographer, and I had no copies of any of my work, other than what was on my computer and what was in one photo album. My computers were stolen from my house when I was robbed last year, and any actual photographs I had were destroyed when they trashed my place. Everything is/was gone... Learn from me!

#136 - On 06/08/2009 at 5:31pm by Jaguaress

I'm going to have to agree with #56 here. She may be your mother, but that is no excuse for what she did. I'd contact either a good lawyer or Judge Judy.

#137 - On 06/08/2009 at 5:58pm by buu700

Slap dat bitch!!

#138 - On 06/08/2009 at 6:07pm by Jarlais

my mom is a psycho cleaner like that too. i don't understand how people can "clean" for others, throw out such a signifcant amount of their stuff, and think it'll be okay.

#139 - On 06/08/2009 at 6:39pm by kel_riv

shes a fucking moron. also people who arnt artists or just love drawing and anime and stuff(like me) dont understand that world

#140 - On 06/08/2009 at 6:45pm by pwnage79

I have several family members who have tried to be nice and clean but ended up doing more harm than good. Thank her for the consideration, but explain that you would prefer that she doesn't clean your stuff and if she does, not to throw ANYTHING out, no matter how useless she thinks it is.

#141 - On 06/08/2009 at 6:46pm by cthulhu1138

That's y u don't give ur mom the key

#142 - On 06/08/2009 at 6:48pm by guitarist3047

Just send her the bill and she'll get the message.

#143 - On 06/08/2009 at 6:59pm by csigabajnok

wow, i'm sorry but is your mom an idiot? who does that. tell her never to touch your things again.

#144 - On 06/08/2009 at 7:02pm by kxlovesyou

makes me sick just thinking about if that had happened to me. that sucks that sucks that sucks. i hope you at least had some nice scans. or photocopies. or memories. *sob*

#145 - On 06/08/2009 at 7:10pm by amazingkate

Ugh, I'm so sorry for you... That's exactly why I get mad at my mother when she tries to clean my place for me. I feel bad because she's just trying to be helpful, but it's more important that things don't get fucked up, so I have to draw that line with her. It's another reason I would never let her have a key to my apartment. Maybe you should consider that?

#146 - On 06/08/2009 at 7:27pm by jmarie

parents who seriously jump to conclusions really make me sick. this fml almost made me barf.
u have my sympathy, but seriously
i hope ur mom didnt say something as stupid as "i was only trying to help!" when u confronted her about this. thats when she deserves a FALCON PUNCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! in the face :p denying that it was her fault would be truly stupid.

#147 - On 06/08/2009 at 7:32pm by ziqi92

bite her -_- that'll teach her whats what

#148 - On 06/08/2009 at 7:36pm by sageblast95

People who aren't artists just can't understand the feeling of losing your work. Even reading this made me feel a bit upset at the thought of my art being lost.

Make your mother go through the trash to retrieve it all - if she can't, send her a bill and make her pay not only for what she lost, but for the time you'll spend re-making everything for your clients. If she refuses, sue the woman.

I'm so sorry.

#149 - On 06/08/2009 at 7:48pm by Cittenscollar

omg! im am soooo sorry! holy shit. id would be yelling at her.. then when done yelling at her i wouldn't talk to her for a year! i love to draw and hopefully i can make it into a career.. so i can just imagen how you feel. i wish i had magic to bring all your stuff back. this kills me... it really does... ;_;

#150 - On 06/08/2009 at 7:57pm by Sapphy

I would try to be disowned from my mom if that happened

#151 - On 06/08/2009 at 8:09pm by Tripodi

#136, would u like it if people (well not even that, pricks from the internet) started calling your mom names? huh retard.

i hope u didnt tell your mom, that would break her heart. she was trying to do something nice for you anyways :\
sucks though.

#154 - On 06/08/2009 at 9:18pm by SoccerPlaya17

Wow. i would have kicked her the fuck out.
It's absolutely ridiculous that she would come into your home and throw away ANYTHING without knowing if it's important or not.

#155 - On 06/08/2009 at 9:39pm by Korgi

Stupid

#156 - On 06/08/2009 at 9:59pm by tomarino13

First, I would have brought her a nice drink. Next I would have given her a loving hug and warmly kissed her on her cheek. I would have then expressed my sincere appreciation for her selfless kindness to take the time to organize my mess. Finally when she was smiling and relaxed, I would have taken my clinched fist, and delivered an excruciating, painful, solid pubic blow and defied her to even think about driving past my home for the rest of her life.

#157 - On 06/09/2009 at 12:22am by FarSide

As an artist, I feel your pain...This is why I'm a digital artist! No paper to lose and my external hard drive is in a fire-proof safe just in case.

I really hope that you were able to recover at least some of your work.

#158 - On 06/09/2009 at 2:13am by DancingHorse

#29, you said it all.

#159 - On 06/09/2009 at 3:59am by missus_butter

If my mother ever did that to me, there is no force on earth that would stop me from murdering her. And it's a possibility too, because my best ideas are all scratched onto napkins or the backs of shopping lists before I get to my sketchbook again. Thankfully my mom knows better >.>;;

#160 - On 06/09/2009 at 9:51am by artpsychopedia

#7-- Get locked out of your house just one time.

#161 - On 06/09/2009 at 9:55am by artpsychopedia

I think it's time to take the spare key away from mom and give it to someone you can actually trust.

#162 - On 06/09/2009 at 11:10am by takran

DUDE. I FEEL YOUR PAIN!!! my mom did the SAME THING with over a years worth of songs i'd written. "they were just folded up pieces of paper, hunny!" what? am i going to frame them on the wall or something? i am so, so sorry.

#163 - On 06/09/2009 at 1:00pm by obff527

FYM
Fuck your mom.

#164 - On 06/09/2009 at 2:29pm by arinachi

That really sucks, my first year of college (last year) a janitor went into a teachers room and threw away a lot of the students projects thinking they were trash.

#165 - On 06/09/2009 at 3:25pm by bcbird

Dude that sucks dick. I'd have to kill her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#166 - On 06/09/2009 at 3:51pm by nikki54321

Your mother is obviously a flaming idiot.

#167 - On 06/09/2009 at 6:33pm by Grotesque

I wonder, besides all that has already been said by others, if your mom is even aware of your existence.

#168 - On 06/09/2009 at 7:24pm by ToxicFuel

Man, I feel you.
Did you go through the garbage!?

#169 - On 06/09/2009 at 8:34pm by Jareth

Wow, that is horrible. I mean, that's horrible on levels I can't even imagine. Why would she do that? -sigh- There really should just be a category called "Mom."

#170 - On 06/09/2009 at 8:38pm by EnviousAlice

Artists are messy, it's a part of art.

I dunno, part of me just wants to scream out "YOUR MOTHER IS DUMB"

But I just can't assume that she would know such things unless she herself is also an artist. lol

#171 - On 06/09/2009 at 8:48pm by Anu_Ra

That was really presumptive of her. I hope you let her know what a rotten thing she did. I hate people who "clean up" for you. Why can't they admit to themselves that they're not actually helping, just being controlling and self-centered?

#172 - On 06/09/2009 at 9:08pm by FreedomFirst

Ugh, my mom tries to do that to me all the time, except im not professional. If I have a sketch with the blank side up, or if its in a stack of paper, supposedly its trash

#173 - On 06/09/2009 at 10:40pm by phoenixfyre6967

What the fuck is wrong with your mom that she thinks she could just walk into your house and throw away everything on your desk?! I can't even imagine how stupid you'd have to be to think that's okay, especially if she knows you're an artist.

Ever since I was little, every time someone wanted to clean my room (grandma, mom, housekeepers, etc..) I've told them they can't throw away ANY papers, boxes, anything without asking first. And if they complained about it not being possible to clean that way, I would tell them to just not do it then. There are few things worse than that feeling of losing any of your hard work or important items without a trace, and knowing it would have been avoided if someone used their brain.

I'm soooo very, truly sorry. This makes me want to cry :'(.

#174 - On 06/09/2009 at 10:47pm by PureGold

Is your mother mentally challenged? I would seriously ask her to go see a professional.

#175 - On 06/09/2009 at 11:51pm by LSeb

Wow I feel reeeeeeally bad for you

#176 - On 06/09/2009 at 11:57pm by Topguy

Seriously?! That is SO NOT COOL!!!

#177 - On 06/10/2009 at 12:41pm by pernicious_pink

OP - man that really does suck, change locks. :\

my mom loves trying to clean up my room, but most of the time when she goes in there, she throws away projects i've been working on or other random, yet important, things. I tried making it clear that its my room, my space, but she says i dont get privacy cause its her house.

#178 - On 06/10/2009 at 4:49pm by kelsey_LYNN

Throw away her shit then. You'll feel better.

#179 - On 06/10/2009 at 5:37pm by turdburgers

Aw, that really sucks for you. But I think you should at least say thanks for trying, then explain that although you appreciate her gesture, you'd rather her not throw out anything without asking you.

To all you who say the mom's a bitch or whatever, at least she was TRYING to be nice. And a lot of you say your moms do the same thing or would do the same thing. Stop complaining and think about how LUCKY you are to have moms that care about you and try to do helpful things for you. Yes it sucks that sometimes they'll accidentally throw things out, but give them some credit for trying to be nice. Your mom is only human and makes mistakes too. Probably each one of you ruined something of your mom's when you were little, or have accidentally thrown something out you shouldn't have, but she forgave you. As an adult, forgive your mom. She raised you. She obviously loves you. And she'll probably understand your wishes if you don't freak out on her.

(P.S I am an artist, of various types; drawing and writing, musician too, and have nearly had some things i wanted thrown out by my mom, but we managed to save it)

#180 - On 06/10/2009 at 10:26pm by XOfiestypixie

I would've seriously chewed my mom out violently for doing something like that.

#181 - On 06/10/2009 at 11:30pm by shyharmonybear

theres only one thing to do.
kill her.
if not for you, for me.
:(

#182 - On 06/11/2009 at 6:48am by carmela93

That happened to me once. My dad decided to go through my computer and permanently delete all the documents that he thought were infected or something. One of those was the 50,000-word novel I'd been working on for five years. His response? "Shit happens. Sucks for you."

#183 - On 06/11/2009 at 10:05pm by its_erik

My parents decide to do that ALL THE TIME. They constantly tell me to rearange my bookbag and throw random stuff out, which always includes something important which I need a week or two later. I know I should "pay attention to what I'm throwing out," but it wouldn't happen if I'm left alone to use my own "filing system."

#184 - On 06/13/2009 at 4:59am by Reyo

Wow, that really sucks.

I also have tons of stuff lying around, but my mom is an artist herself. I feel quite lucky about that after reading this. :/

#185 - On 06/13/2009 at 9:23am by Winkyburger

Erm, does your Mum not know that you're an artist? o.o

#186 - On 06/13/2009 at 11:15am by tari_joon

This one can't be real! What type of work do you do that she would think it can be thrown out? This could lead to years of therapy for anyone! augh

#187 - On 06/14/2009 at 1:49am by OPT911

Oh my god oh my god oh my god!
I'm an artist as well-not professional-but if someone EVER did that to me I would set their house on fire. Seriously.

#188 - On 06/14/2009 at 5:11am by IAmBridgette

When she asks why you didn't send christmas cards, just tell her that she threw them away.

#189 - On 06/14/2009 at 12:26pm by irockmonkeysocks

Damn man, I would be so pissed off. I mean, does she know you're a full time artist or what? You really didn't deserve this. In fact, it's an invasion of privacy. Illegal under the fourth amendment. Sue her for however much you think that 7 months of work was worth.

#190 - On 06/15/2009 at 3:51am by SlntCobra1

How is being an artist not a real occupation? A job is that thing you do to earn a paycheck right? Who do you think does all the special effects in your favorite action film? Who do you think are MAKING all movies? There is more to an artist that "being inspire" then painting on a canvas. Although there's nothing wrong with that either!
I think everyone that dissing artist are extremely close minded, and jealous that they're stuck in some pathetic cublicle job making peanuts! I think it's awesome that the OP has a career that they are passionate about!

I am curently in school working towards a major in Human Biology with an emphasis on genetics and biotechnology. Now don't get me wrong, I love science, I love learning how things work and I love all the work that I do! In a year and a half I will graduate and go on to med school, or pharm school, or grad school (hopefully I'll have it figured out by then! lol!) and I'm sure I will end up with a career that will make me very happy, HOWEVER if I were able to have any career in the world, it sure as hell wouldn't be a friggin' pharmacist!

To be able to make a career out of doing what you love is an accomplishment, not an easy way out!

Sorry about your loss OP, I hoped you made it clear that throwing out your stuff is a no no!

#191 - On 06/15/2009 at 10:24pm by i_luv_puppies
