Man or woman?

Today, my parents came to the restaurant I work at as a waiter. After, I picked up the check to realize they had left me a $500 tip! We split the tips among the employees so I only got $50 back but I was still psyched. When I got home they asked me if I had noticed that they used my credit card. FML

I hope you told them that you had to split the tips. What a waste. they thought they were being clever and wasted all your tip money. Heh. FYL indeed.

WHY would you split your tip? That's just dumb.

#18 - On 08/07/2009 at 2:17pm by genius_man16

you split your tip because thats how many restaurants are run...splitting the tips with the wait staff, busboys, bartenders....not because the waiter said hey look i got $500 and i wanna share it!!

um, you split the tips because if you didn't, the bartenders and busboys, and the host/ess wouldn't get anything because only the waiters get the tips. but lets say you got a $50 tip instead of a $10 tip because you managed to get the food to the table in time because the chef was really fast & so was the bartender, ect so they helped you earn that tip so its nice to split them. so yeah, THATS why he would do that. try common sense much, god. you're an idiot. did you know that? well, now you do. im also guesing your parents never taught you manners either cause your rude as hell since you don't know common courtesy.

Yeah, but at least where I live, the bartenders get their own tips, and there are no busboys, so you can just go fuck yourself.

hey buddy do you know how the restaurant business works???? waiters/waitresses split their tips ... its common knowledge

#67 - On 08/07/2009 at 4:30pm by sjbartholome

It's never failed to amaze me how society expects this "tip" thing. Do I tip the girl at fast food joints for bringing my food to my table? Do I tip the sales associate who helped me find the right size of pants? Do I tip my dentist for yanking a painful tooth? Hell, do I even tip the COOK/CHEF/w.e. who MADE the dinner??? Hellz no. I tip the woman or man who brought it to me.

Nevermind how tipping's percentage has gone up over the years... When I was TAUGHT to tip, it was 10%... Now it's upwards of 20-25% I'm told... OK, so the PRICES have already gone up with inflation, so the 10% tip of yesteryear is already increased... why did we increase the percentage as well?!?!?!? And who sets and regulates this sort of thing???

Society has the most retarded expectations. And people wonder why I'd happily see you all buried as compost...

As for parents who trick their dumb kid into buy them dinner and leaving himself a 500.oo tip, I'd report them for credit card fraud. See how funny they think it is then.

#71 - On 08/07/2009 at 4:39pm by DieterDerBlau

But that's why they pay waiters next to nothing wages, and those people like the Chef and hostess make more money. Waiters wages are designed to where the majority of their income is their tips, this must be a chain or corporate owned restaurant that OP works at, because that's a BS policy about splitting tips, that kind of shit is for coffee and ice cream shops.

And Bartenders make their own tips too, most restaurants that serve cocktails have bars where people can go up and sit at.

#74 - On 08/07/2009 at 4:44pm by rockstarK9

The idea is to make a larger portion of a waiter's/waitress's salary directly proportional to how well they do their job by paying them a lower base salary and getting the rest in tips. If not for tips service would generally be a lot worse and no cheaper.

#102 - On 08/07/2009 at 8:07pm by cybely

@67 not common knowledge when you dont live in the US. i assumed he chose to split it and clicked YDI, but since it seems he had no choice, then it becomes FYL. dont assume everyone knows your system asshole.

#110 - On 08/07/2009 at 11:20pm by organisedchaos

71 you are an idiot...if you can't tip your server even 20% since the "inflation" is so rough, then don't waste our time going out to eat. i've been a waitress for years, i get paid 2.33 an hour, and every day i put up with people who feel it's okay not to tip people who's job is to make sure their meals are good and they are happy...and if you can't appreciate the hard work servers go through to make sure you are happy, then don't even dine out. in a lot of restaurants, a portion of your tip is going to the hostess who sat you, the bartender who made your drinks, the cook who made your food, the expo who made sure your food got out on time, and the busser who made sure your table was clean.

#113 - On 08/08/2009 at 1:56am by steph84236

steph last I checked 20% was for exceptional service not average service. Also, why are you complaining about tips since you've been a server for years? One would think you're used to it by now. Those people who feel its ok not to tip people for only doing their job and nothing more are correct in their belief. I don't know where you servers get this feeling of self entitlement from; if not getting tipped for only doing your job, and nothing extra, bothers you then maybe you shouldn't be a server.

#115 - On 08/08/2009 at 3:06am by razzumfrazzum

I agree. I work hard for my money, do I get tips for showing up to work and doing my job, no, its what bonus' are for. When you employer thinks you are worth it he needs to pay you a "tip." Not someone who might just want a nice time out. It is your job to make people happy? Then do your job and don't complain because that does not make me happy.

#132 - On 08/10/2009 at 8:26am by LaceyPatrickson

Why would you split your tips, that's fucked up. More like "FUCK YOUR JOB NIQQA"

#138 - On 08/19/2009 at 10:41pm by mikel81

Steph, If you are really a server than how come you don't know how much you make? No where in North America or Australia is it legal for a server to make $2.33 - anyone who has ever truly working in waitstaffing can tell you that, and there is a giant sign in every restaurant that by law, has to be placed somewhere employees walk past every day stating the same. You can have a base wage of $2.33 but in no way does that mean you make $2.33 - if your tips don't bring you up to minimum wage, your employer pays the difference between your base wage and minimum wage. IF you are are going to lie about working somewhere, at least get your facts straight

#139 - On 08/20/2009 at 7:33pm by cxal

Why do I have to pay you? Do you pay me for cleaning your clothes or carrying your groceries out to the car. a tip is something that is supposed to be a reward. But why do I have to pay you. Its not like you are doing anything outside of your job.

You wouldnt notice your name on the credit card or the credit card receipt???? Your a waiter pretty sure your suppossed to pay attention to things like that. That could just be me, it's okay though because you will get it back from them, just go grab a dr. pepper and think it over. I'm sure it will come to you, and if it doesn't YDI because you don't have an imagination, and if you don't have an imagination than it must be hard to live all the way up on drury lane with the muffin man because you don't even know hes your next door neighbor!!! He's the muffin man for christ's sakes I bet if you were good friends with him and invited him over for guys poker nights he would hook you up with so many free muffins. I'll bet you right now he has a muffin in his oven that you have not even heard of, but even though you haven't heard of it it's the most delicious thing you would have ever eaten, it could be some crazy concoction but because you have no imagination you will never become friends with the muffin man even though you live right on drury lane. What a waste.

#26 - On 08/07/2009 at 2:33pm by ananamoose

I agree. She is rude to the poor Muffin Man. Perhaps she should be smart, like the muffin man, and keep her muffins to herself (ie the credit card.)
Why the hell do you parents have access to your money and why did you not check it. You almost deserve that. I would still steal their debit card and get back all the money they stole from you. Don't tell them. Say since you treated them they need to return the favor.

#36 - On 08/07/2009 at 2:58pm by ForestFire0

If he was going to do that he would need to buy a bunch of expensive shit in a short period of time in a bunch of different areas so it would look like identity theft. That ship has sailed tho.

#120 - On 08/08/2009 at 11:31am by zrhcrx

Maybe you work in a crap restaurant, but if that was me, I'd just tell management that I needed that other $450 back because the tip had only been a joke. If I explained what happened, I'd easily be able to get that money back from my staff. FYL for working with crappy employees if you're out that $450...

#13 - On 08/07/2009 at 2:13pm by Nan

you only got 50 back? how many people work on a shift? and did no one else make tips? this doesn't sound realistic to me. i call BS

#40 - On 08/07/2009 at 3:05pm by DoomJeff91

you split the tips evenly idiot. and he means that out of the $500 tip, he ended up with $50 which is actually REALLY good. and if the tip was $500 and you divide it evenly, HMM, LETS USE BASIC GR.2 MATH. which, incase you don't know (which im pretty sure you don't since you haven't figured it out yet, dumbass) is 10. because 10 times 50 equals... 500! yay for us! we know basic math!

ps. for those of you who are oblivious and really SLOW, intense sarcasm was used.

#43 - On 08/07/2009 at 3:16pm by whoperlargefries

whoperlargefries, you're gonna die of a heart attack.
you should really take some time to relax and not get all riled up about some idiot online.

#49 - On 08/07/2009 at 3:40pm by ghostgirll

#43 not all restaurants have a policy that splits tips evenly. That's just stupid considering that it rewards the lazy ass servers that don't do anything to warrant a tip. All the restaurants I know of split out a percentage of each server's tip total to the busboys, cooks, hosts, and bartenders; not each server as well. Either the OP works at a restaurant with a dumb ass tip pooling policy, or he's an idiot for believing that they're supposed to split tips evenly and his coworkers are crooks.

#50 - On 08/07/2009 at 3:42pm by razzumfrazzum

First of all, don't talk down to me. You don't know me and you know nothing about me. I am a server and have been for 9 years as well as working in a bank. I know basic math, asshole. If you didn't fully read my post I did ask how many people worked on the shift. What I misunderstood was that he walked away with $50 from that particular tip and not for the entire night. So you can go fuck yourself with your 'superior' attitude. Second, speaking of basic math skills maybe you should employ some basic grammar skills. Third, if you are getting so riled up about something that HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU, then you should go out and get a fucking life. If this is the most important issue for you today that you invest so much emotion and energy into it then I feel sorry for you.

On a side note, many restaurants do not use the tip sharing method. I am aware that some do and I understand what it is. However, I do not think this is a fair practice, as someone stated before, since there are always 'those' servers who slack off or just generally suck; every restaurant has them. As a server, I tip out my bartenders, busboys, kitchen, and food runner a percentage of my sales every shift I work.

Oh, and I still call BS on this post.

#99 - On 08/07/2009 at 7:55pm by Goosie

Maybe you left your credit card in an unsafe place and your parents thought they'd teach you a little lesson about identity theft? A huge assumption, but possible.
That still sucks though.

#15 - On 08/07/2009 at 2:14pm by uneekfreak16

Aw:( that sucks LOL

#17 - On 08/07/2009 at 2:16pm by pppokeyface

What? You must work in a shady place. That's likely an unfair tip sharing practice and the massive tip size compared to what is likely a small amount of actual food purchased should raise a huge number of red flags to both your company accountant AND the credit card company. Even if this wasn't fraud it would look like it enough to alert someone so this wouldn't go through.

#19 - On 08/07/2009 at 2:19pm by tronner

you kinda deserve it for not checking the name on the card and for thinking they'd tip that much but still. don't leave your card in the open and get the money back from them or dispute it.... it's unlikely they'd sign your name how you sign it.

#20 - On 08/07/2009 at 2:20pm by kaelendra

yeah but, she shouldn't have to do that, because it would have been like a gift from her parents.

#55 - On 08/07/2009 at 4:00pm by ConnorMichelle

No kidding. I hope you look at credit cards a bit more carefully in the future. You're supposed to verify the signature on the back. That's why so many people write "See ID" on the back on their credit card, to prevent it's usage if it's stolen. I'm suprised how often people don't even bother to look.

#77 - On 08/07/2009 at 4:47pm by wink568

Probably because "Verify ID" as a method of "signing" your card is prohibited by each of the major card's cardholder agreements.

You are told to /sign/ your card. That's part of the cardholder agreement you signed. Whether you think your method is better, or not, doesn't matter.

Oh, and if a merchant refuses to take a credit card transaction /without/ ID, you as a consumer can report them to your cardholder. Either a merchant requires ID for /all/ transactions (including cash), or none. Enough complaints can lead to their card acceptance ability being taken away.

Why? Because the bank assumes (and probably correctly) that your average drone isn't going to be an expert at handwriting recognition, nor at ID checking. The bank /does/ have people who can analyze handwriting, so if push comes to shove, you'll get that fraudulent transaction waived. I'd rather deal with my bank than someone at an establishment who could be doing anything up to and including running my card through a duplicator device (and now they've got my Driver's License number, yay!)

Parent, YDI for getting on the internet and spouting an urban myth. "Tell people to write "VERIFY ID" on their card, and then unless they do, you can always claim a charge as fraud." Whatever.

#105 - On 08/07/2009 at 9:06pm by Achromatic

It is not prohibited. You sign the back of your credit card to validate the contract. Their is nothing that prohibits you to write "See ID" next to your signature. The merchant should verify the signature regardless.

#23 - On 08/07/2009 at 2:24pm by pipsqueak2099

seriously, what type of fucking restaurant are you working at? Most restaurants have a policy that YOU keep what YOU earned in tips and tipshare only about $3-$5 for the busboys and bartenders. Your bosses and coworkers are thieves if they take that much money from you.

I hope you make them pay you back the 450$+the meal price, i would be pissed if my parents did something like that to me

#30 - On 08/07/2009 at 2:42pm by Korgi

A percentage to the bussers I can see, but having n waitstaff and splitting tips n ways makes no sense. Yeah, there are days you get stiffed by a big table, but overall the point of tipping is to reward good service and get rid of lousy servers.

FYL for having parents who misuse a credit card, and for *not noticing it*. In any case, your parents' apparent generousity should have been made an exception to the split rule in the first place.

Remember folks, credit cards are NOT TRANSFERRABLE from one person to another. It doesn't matter that the account holder is your spouse / parent / baby daddy / baby mama / Lesbian life partner / boss / former cellmate. If you want a card in your name, that is between you, the account holder, and the issuing bank. If you are a co-owner of the account, you should have your own card. If you are an authorized user of the account, you should have your own card.

#52 - On 08/07/2009 at 3:44pm by ShadowNine

YDI for 2 reasons $500 tip is a huge red flag even if it was your parents. And because you work in a hellhole that does mass tip sharing. As a waitress I worked my ass off for an average
of %30 tips over the course of me working there(pre bar tip out) everyone else averaged %10-12. If I had to share with their lazy butts I wouldve quit.

#54 - On 08/07/2009 at 3:58pm by neya

Sometimes splitting the tips is because sometimes someone doesn't take a table so they can clean up or help out elsewhere. That person is still helping out but they aren't helping a table which could mean they wouldn't get tipped.
I think you should talk to the people you work with and tell them it was a mistake or talk to the credit card company. It's not even fair for your parents to give out $500s in a tip from your card.

#56 - On 08/07/2009 at 4:00pm by i_love_fml_11

#76 - On 08/07/2009 at 4:45pm by dusty1030

Why would they do that? What kind of a resturant splits tips? Very non capitalistic.

#78 - On 08/07/2009 at 4:52pm by rustyrox

Why would you even enter that tip amount and also after seeing such a large amount wouldn't you look at the card they were using and go back to the table and ask if they meant to put so much in. I mean they are your parents after all unless you've seen them be this generous in the past I would think it a tad odd especially since you have to split tips at your job.

#79 - On 08/07/2009 at 4:53pm by Hermyoni

NOW WHY DID HE DESERVE THAT? WHY DID U CLICK ON YOU DESERVED THAT COMMENTS? GO FUCK!!!

#80 - On 08/07/2009 at 4:56pm by altair_117

Yes, it is time to get your parents credit and spoil the hell out of yourself. However, YDI because I don't care how old you are, why in the hell did your parent have YOUR card?

To the others asking why the tip was divided with the coworker: That's how that shit works. Who in the hell doesn't know that about restaurants? If anything, just the bussers should share the tip but FYL if you are one of those who believes that your server will actually receive you FULL tip for themselves next time you go have a nice dinner....

#81 - On 08/07/2009 at 5:00pm by _whatever_77

The idiots who don't understand tip-sharing obviously have never worked in the industry. FYI, getting caught hiding tip money equals your ass getting fired.

YDI for not looking at the card, but since it was your parents I probably wouldn't have checked it either, assuming that you have the same bank with the same colored cards like my family does.

Check your wallet next time your parents come in. (:

#84 - On 08/07/2009 at 5:42pm by always_his

ok i work as a waiter and this is how it is where i work, waiters each have their own stations (x number of tables) and they work those stations. they collect the tips from each of their tables and thats it, we keep the tips

#85 - On 08/07/2009 at 6:06pm by hmartin

You can try disputing the charge. Tell your bank that your credit card was stolen and used at the restaurant. If the business doesn't have a copy of YOUR signature authorizing the transaction, the restaurant will have to pay for the charge, and not you.

#86 - On 08/07/2009 at 6:09pm by som

that WE MADE. if im doing good and i make 100 bucks then im not gonna split that with some motherfucker who only made 10, thats his problem, he should learn to be a better worker. its true that we give tips to the bus boys tho, its usually 10% of what each of us made that day. so like 5-10 bucks a person. if ur forced to split ur tips, then quit working where ur working cuz that shit is fucked up. ur getting ripped off, damn dude ur psyched over 50 bucks? you dont care that you dont get ur other 450? shit, and its ur own money too.

#87 - On 08/07/2009 at 6:11pm by hmartin

YDI for being selfish and actually taking the money from the people who gave you life, raised you, and who you are still living with. You didn't even call to see if it was a mistake? They probably did it as a joke but never thought that their own child would be so greedy and stupid.

#89 - On 08/07/2009 at 6:47pm by sunkissdluster

WTF? The parents are definitely the assholes in this situation. It's not greedy to accept a tip. He probably just thought it was a gift. Plus, why would parents use their waiter son's credit card to pay for their dinner? Bizarre and rude...

#92 - On 08/07/2009 at 7:00pm by dramakat11

This is bizarre and fake.

#91 - On 08/07/2009 at 6:53pm by Me27

I'm pretty sure you are more a failure of a human being then any waiter or waitress could be.

Please, do the world a favor and never reproduce - we don't need any more of that type of stupidity.

#94 - On 08/07/2009 at 7:27pm by BLNovelist

just because someone's a waiter or waitress doesn't mean they're a failure, I paid my way through college working as a waitress, so stfu

#96 - On 08/07/2009 at 7:40pm by sanguicolous

Wow, what the fuck is wrong with you, knight05? Is the stick in your ass SO far in that its turning off the common courtesy centers of your brain? God, people like you need therapy.

#107 - On 08/07/2009 at 10:16pm by alewiina

I was going to say YDI for not looking at the name on the credit card, but then I realized that you should be able to trust your parents.

And wtf is up with all the rude comments? People can be complete assholes sometimes.

#95 - On 08/07/2009 at 7:28pm by BananikaND

You should tell the credit card company that a mistake was made on the tip line and it should have been 5.00 or 50.00, not 500.00 and have it credited back to you.

#97 - On 08/07/2009 at 7:44pm by HotRodScott

you need to get ur money bak

#98 - On 08/07/2009 at 7:49pm by hello2009

Sucks for you, your parents are ass holes. And the people giving rude comments are ass holes.
I hope they get layed off.

#100 - On 08/07/2009 at 8:03pm by Penelope_Hayes

Wtffffffffffffff split????????? Thats fukin lame

#101 - On 08/07/2009 at 8:04pm by KiddNYC10

Dude you really don't know resturant business, say there are 6 waiters and 3 busboys, you get a dollar, well sure as hell you're not keeping, cause all they get is like 5 dollars an hour, so tips came in, where if you got a dollar, or ten, you would split it, getting extra for your good service, some waiters are working hard if you don't notice them running around saying phrases over and over. How would you like it if someone got a $500 tip and that one waiter kept it all to himself, it would suck no?

#128 - On 08/09/2009 at 12:33pm by Tchernov9

@ #128 - I know the restaurant business and it is still fucking lame. God forbid the waiter that maybe EARNED a large tip got to KEEP the large tip instead of having to split it with the "I'm an entitled douchebag" servers he or she works with.

#130 - On 08/09/2009 at 7:29pm by tronner

Well if he keeps all the money he is tipped, what are the others supposed to keep? Nothing, when that guy has $500??

#140 - On 08/25/2009 at 6:33pm by Tchernov9

Fuck your parents.

#104 - On 08/07/2009 at 8:45pm by IOwnedYou

Your parents are SO stupid. EVEN IF YOU DIDN'T SPLIT TIPS, YOU WOULD HAVE HAD TO PAY INCOME TAXES ON THAT... which is not an insignificant amount. They charged you to serve them. I can't believe your parents are so inconsiderate and stupid.

#106 - On 08/07/2009 at 9:13pm by chimmy

You seriously need to consider that fraud and/or theft and contact your credit card company about it.

#108 - On 08/07/2009 at 10:46pm by GriefBacon

we are losing the good manners

#109 - On 08/07/2009 at 10:57pm by luvluv

I've been a server for a few years and I would never work for any place that split tips. You should get to keep what you earn, for better for worse.

#111 - On 08/07/2009 at 11:38pm by disney_blonde

Deny their entrance to the restaurant.

#112 - On 08/07/2009 at 11:42pm by fawfulster

FAKE unless your completly retarded you would notice your parents forging your own signature if you dont recognize your own signature your retarded and also if you have a chip and pin card and use that as your excuse for not recognizing the signature then why the fuck do your parents no your pin

#114 - On 08/08/2009 at 2:15am by Mylife_is_so_fd

YDI for not liking System of a Down and not being Straight Edge

#116 - On 08/08/2009 at 3:11am by Imgonnatrollyou

You were psyched because you thought your parents gave a $500 tip that you would only get $50 from??

You're a moron.

#117 - On 08/08/2009 at 3:37am by thugbert

Make your parents give you back the $450

#118 - On 08/08/2009 at 6:06am by hellFighter

Your parents suck. But how were they able to use your credit card? who signed?

#119 - On 08/08/2009 at 11:01am by she_bangs

WTF kinda shitty place splits tips?

#121 - On 08/08/2009 at 4:35pm by cocky

#122 - On 08/08/2009 at 7:43pm by bigcac

1. I woulda kept the tip.
2. What are your parents doing with your credit card?
3. That SUCKS.

#123 - On 08/08/2009 at 10:30pm by katewasherexx

#125 - On 08/09/2009 at 1:45am by veggiebre93

so there are 100 servers at your resteraunt? (asuming you split the tip evenly)

#126 - On 08/09/2009 at 4:55am by Paige_Nicole10

dude, 500 divided by 100 would be 5 bucks. theres TEN servers lol

#127 - On 08/09/2009 at 5:24am by Kimphotog

Thats what you get for not checking signatures on the card.

#129 - On 08/09/2009 at 1:58pm by ObadiahtheSlim

YDI, That's why you should always check the card for the name and ID...I know it was the OP's parents, but if you do it every time it becomes second nature and he would've realized it before he processed it.

As far as the tipping thing goes in general...it's bullshit. I've been in restaurants where one girl takes my order, another brings out my salad, some other kid brings out my dinner, and another girl refills my drink. Who the hell do I tip? Not to mention that it's not my fault that they don't get paid enough.

That's what I liked about Japan...they felt it was an insult to tip as that meant that the employer wasn't paying enough.

Don't get me wrong, I do tip...when people deserve it. If they don't deserve it, why should I tip? I've actually given 100% tips before...the service was excellent, as was the food. And I tip cooks. Again, only if they deserve it though.

#134 - On 08/10/2009 at 11:13am by The_Sadist

Report it as credit card fraud and have your parents arrested. That'll teach them.

#137 - On 08/18/2009 at 6:22pm by Scorponok

make them pay you!

#141 - On 08/30/2009 at 6:46pm by elizabethash93

I would have cursed my parents out and demanded my money back. And if they didn't give it back to me, I would have taken them to court.

#146 - On 09/09/2009 at 9:48am by VeggieTrunks

that's messed up what did you do to them ?!

#147 - On 10/29/2009 at 9:58pm by kile88

why split a tip from your own parents. surely you could have at least guessed it was a joke.
