Today, I was giving a lecture to my class I heard a phone go off. Aggravated and exhausted, I asked everyone to turn their phones off. Then the phone rang again. I lost my shit and spent the next half hour calling my students a bunch of "technology whores". Then I realized the phone was mine. FML

The teacher overreacted, but it's effing ANNOYING when you're in class and there are idiots text-messaging and having their phones go off constantly. I get that people forget to turn them off sometimes, but to leave them on constantly is just BS. You're not the only ones in the class and the rest of the class didn't pay to listen to your ringtones/vibrations (yes, those are loud too) or have class interrupted because you got an urgent call from one of your friends.
Nevertheless, yelling and screaming over it is a bit irrational-- if somewhat understandable (I know it sucks being a student around people who don't have enough decency to turn their phones off)-- and you did deserve it.

One of my profs has a good tactic against cell phones. If a cell phone goes off in the middle of class, there will be a quiz at the beginning of the next class for everyone, no exceptions.
Well he did that for the Freshmen intro-level course last semester. I'm in a senior level course with him this semester and he doesn't do that, so I guess he simply has higher expectations for the upperclassmen he teaches.

Get off your high horse. Everyone forgets to turn their phone down once in a while, and you have no idea what might be happening on the other end of the line. There was a time I was texting in class because my dad had just been diagnosed with cancer and I was asking my sister for details while they were at the hospital. Getting up and leaving would have been far more distracting to other students than me sitting there silently looking at my phone.

Lol. the kids at my school are smart enough to put their phones on vibrate but occasionally it goes off. My teachers doesn't care, they just say"please turn it off" or "there's nothing to laugh at,my phone goes off too" but it's still funny when someones phone goes off, like one time in FCS, my friend(yes im talking about you because i know your going to read this later, Noey) forgot to put it on vibrate and it went off. she blamed me which is kind of stupid BECAUSE my phone was broken and it was turned off, STUPID NOEY! I have a chemistry teacher who is the sweetest person I know. If your cellphone goes off, she'll say "Someone's phone is ringing" to let you know in case you didnt notice. She also says to go out in the hall and answer it if neccesary, she says that she knows that we have lives. She too has her phone occasionally go off during class and she answers it if it's important.
Try to be more like her!
Ugh. A cell phone goes off, for what, 30 seconds before someone realizes it's theirs and turns it off or before it goes to voicemail? So I don't understand why teachers feel the need to bitch about it for so long. It takes more time out of the lecture than the cell going off in the first place. Unless it just keeps going off, I think it's best to just ignore it rather than make a spectacle out of it. It tends to be the same people who leave their cell on and loud, so it's not particularly fair to students that don't to endure a long rant in the middle of class. Just remind everyone at the beginning of the next class that they really need to make sure it's not an issue

All these people saying "it's not that big of a deal if I look at my phone when it's not hurting anyone" are obviously little 13 and 14 year olds who have no idea how fucking annoying it is when you're sitting in class and then someones phone starts vibrating. And it actually does hurt. Not a physical hurt, but it's distracting and then the teacher has to stop and yell at you to turn off your phone. Which never would have needed to be said if people just followed directions in the first place and kept their damn phones turned off.

My history teacher did this a few months ago.
He was in the middle of a lecture and someone's computer made a noise. He slammed the lid shut on the kid whose computer he thought it was and went off on this rant about how inattentive we are and wasted the whole class. No one had the nerve to tell him it was his computer.
