Today, a milkbone commerical came on TV. At the end of the commercial, they whistle and throw a milkbone across the screen, prompting my 100 lb German Shepherd to leap off the couch and pummel my brand new plasma screen TV. FML

That is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. Stop wasting time and money suing people for shit like this. She should either train her dog better, keep her dog out of the tv room, or put the tv in a higher spot.

German Shepard's can jump over 6 feet high.. My friend's used to jump a 7 foot fence all the time to murder their neighbor's illegal chickens and annoying rooster. Bad ass dogs, xD

#108 - On 11/04/2009 at 1:22am by katgurl

#35 You can't blame the dog...And you can't blame the OP. It's not like there's any training for a dog NOT to go after the treat.
Don't worry OP, assuming you were smart enough to get a warranty on it, it can easily be replaced.

#143 - On 11/06/2009 at 8:16pm by blondemoment

Fuck you number 134!
I heard nothing about someone letting the dogs out in this FML. Only a fat mut destroying a tv.

#144 - On 11/06/2009 at 10:18pm by HahaYDI

Ouch. This really sucks. But if its brand new, you could try to get warranty to cover it?

#2 - On 11/03/2009 at 5:07pm by RavensRule97

warranties cover manufacture errors, not dog training errors

#5 - On 11/03/2009 at 5:13pm by JohnE3

FAKE! Dogs can't see TV images, so unless your screen has smell-o-vision there's no way your dog could know that there was a bone on the screen.

#7 - On 11/03/2009 at 5:14pm by SirWombat

Yeah. It is arrogant to believe that we can assume with scientific investigation that animals cannot view TV the same way humans do. What we know about sensory perception is derived from what we know we see and what we know about the anatomy of the human eye and brain. Though we can make some logical deductions about how other species see, we can't be fully sure because we ARE NOT INSIDE THEIR BRAINS. You are a jackass.

#32 - On 11/03/2009 at 5:55pm by TheManBoy

Dogs can see images but they are color-blind as far as we know.

#37 - On 11/03/2009 at 6:17pm by janise

Actually the color-blind thing is a common myth. Dogs /can/ see in color, they're just dichromatic, which means that they can only see two primary colors, blue and yellow.

#39 - On 11/03/2009 at 6:26pm by _neutrality

Dogs can see images, but they can't translate a flat image into a 3D environment. This has been demonstrated scientifically. Put a dog in a room in glass walls, so odors can't get through. Put a video of a man holding a biscuit on one side. Put an actual man holding a biscuit on the other. The dog always runs towards the real person.

It is feasible that the dog was tricked by the whistle. But there is no way he saw the TV and thought it was a real biscuit. So I'd go with a high probability this is fake. But you can't be sure, dogs do weird things all the time.

#50 - On 11/03/2009 at 7:08pm by blalien

I'm with you on that one - dogs cannot see 2-dimensional, if you play a video for your daog with hand signals he will never do what you signal him to do - even if its perfectly well trained.
Maybe the dog reacted to the whistle. But i say fake.

#84 - On 11/03/2009 at 9:28pm by baba_ganoush

Well whenever our TV makes a sound that appeals to our dog, he runs outside the house to *behind* the TV where he thinks the sound from the TV might be coming. Maybe the dog in this FML was slightly smarter, he ran towards the sound of a whistle, likely a sound to which he attaches positive associations with. So I don't think this once can be necessarily dismissed as fake.

#105 - On 11/04/2009 at 12:31am by narks

Obviously, most dogs have to learn the difference. My dog used to fight his reflection in the mirror, and bark angrily at the TV screen when there was another (barking) dog on the screen.

#109 - On 11/04/2009 at 1:24am by katgurl

I can imagine the mirror thing happening. Dogs are not intelligent enough to recognize their own reflection in a mirror. (Google the Mirror Test for more info) And a mirror simulates a 3D setting much better than a TV screen, since the image changes with your perception. The dog could see another dog, but not hear or smell it, so he must have been confused as hell.

sue them

#10 - On 11/03/2009 at 5:18pm by hawkloverr

funny, but not believable
Dogs and cats see tv differently than humans,
they see it as a series of lines actually, so unless your dog jumps at anything that whistles, then this is clearly a fake

#11 - On 11/03/2009 at 5:19pm by great_lawl

Really? Our dog barks at other dogs on the TV, even just by looking at them, when my mom watches the Dog Whisperer. And my sister's cat has TV show preferences! So safe to say, they can see pretty clearly.

#29 - On 11/03/2009 at 5:48pm by JulzKay

maybe they reacted to the sound of the animals on tv?
but they certainly wouldn't be able to visually see them

#31 - On 11/03/2009 at 5:54pm by great_lawl

Not true. I have a Rottweiler who follows images on the TV. My golden could care less, but if a football game or basketball game is on the TV, my Rott runs back and forth trying to catch the ball... he actually snaps at the image of the ball. He also follows dogs around on the tv even if the sound is down. There was a show on discovery channel about how dogs intelligence has greatly evolved in recent years... perhaps their visual response has evolved as well?

#97 - On 11/03/2009 at 11:04pm by everydayisFML

Yes sue them for $4,000,000 to cover the price of the TV, emotional damage incurred by yourself, and most importantly (and expensively!) to cover emotional damage inflicted upon your doggy.

WTF is wrong with all of these people telling you to sue your dog? How do you do that? It would be easier to take him to the pound. But it is not the dogs fault, that is just a damn fine TV you had there

#20 - On 11/03/2009 at 5:32pm by donkey_hang_down

Erm, I don't think anyone was saying sue the DOG. They were saying to sue the company...

#22 - On 11/03/2009 at 5:35pm by LemonFairy

lol, I thought people meant sue the dog at first, too. Also, people talking about warranty claims, they aren't going to cover accidental.

#26 - On 11/03/2009 at 5:40pm by GreenHacker

Sue the Dog? How the heck does anybody know that the dog's name is Sue - unless the OP edited that fact out later...

#112 - On 11/04/2009 at 1:42am by doof_fisch

Fairy lemon,

I was being an idiot just like all of the morons that say "sue". The problem is too many people try to sue, for all different reasons, and it takes the effect away.

GH - that is funny, i never thought of that, "look in the warranty" maybe they are talking about the warranty on the dog... lol

jchans - Thank you for getting the joke

Your dog probably won't get a very good lawyer, so you should be able to win easily. I hope your dog has deep pockets, so you can buy a less stupid pet.

#25 - On 11/03/2009 at 5:38pm by perdix

@ perdix Excuse me.... I've been retained by Mr G. Shepherd.... I'm not really a lawyer, but I play one on t.v. The d-o-g doesn't know any better, though. Shhh

#34 - On 11/03/2009 at 6:10pm by kile88

Blasphemy! Your sources prove nothing! If anything I'd be so bold as to make the claim that your article adds credibility to the story at hand. If the dog were to hear a loud noise coming from the direction of the plasma screen and in turn see a large, dark object quickly growing from that very space, would it not be startled? I believe it is you who is deserving of the title numskull, good sir.

#58 - On 11/03/2009 at 7:36pm by wienerwagon

The authors credentials: James Glover (Dr.) is widely experienced in small animal practice. He attended Vet school at Kansas State University - Manhattan, Kansas, and has practiced in various hospitals in New Jersey throughout his career, as well as having various dog training diplomas. Now retired, he is well known for giving seminars on animal care and helps educate rescued pet adopters through volunteer work.

I think I"ll take his word over some anonymous internet posters claiming their dogs watch TV. Try again, douche.

#60 - On 11/03/2009 at 7:44pm by d_fens99

I'm having trouble figuring out how you misunderstood me. I am however writing this under the assumption that you are competent enough to read an article before copying and pasting the link to it and that may be where the problem lies. The article that you posted clearly states that dogs are more than capable of both recognizing and reacting to both the movements on a television screen and the sounds that accompany them. Now, if we reach down into the depths of our minds and use the inherent cognitive powers we possess, we can easily deduce that the dog's assault on the television is easily possible whether or not it recognizes the milkbone.

#63 - On 11/03/2009 at 7:59pm by wienerwagon

A dog training diploma? What credible four-year university issues one of those? Is it a PhD? B.A.? I bet it's a B.S.

YDI for having a dog. Seriously. Of all the common pets, dogs are the most stupid and disgusting. Maybe you could shoot it in the head and save yourself a lot of trouble.

#46 - On 11/03/2009 at 6:45pm by hypoxxia

Please, PLEASE explain your theory on how a dog is stupid. When a dog is trained and owner gives a command of sit, bark, attack, etc, they do it. Police dogs are trained to find a criminal, find drugs, and protect their owner. A hunting dog is trained to retrieve whatever the hunter has killed. A show dog is trained to stand in certain positions, pose, and not move. As far as them being disgusting, why is it then some people shell out $5,000+ for a dog? So please, explain to me and the rest of the people who read your comment and think you're a typical online loser, how dogs are stupid and disgusting.

#53 - On 11/03/2009 at 7:18pm by sydefx

I spent a good deal of time today tediously denying passage to all of the FMLs that appeared for moderation. As I was reading through the large bounty of mindless drivel I happened upon this tale and took a moment to read it. Dare I click "No" as I've done a thousand times before, I thought? I poised myself to click the ominous red button and began my mouse's journey to the large X, but something on the television caught my attention. The very commercial described in this tale began to play and I slowly shifted my gaze away from the glare of my laptop to the television in the living room. The whistle sounded and the bone was thrown and something strange happened to me. It were almost as if fate had intervened. I felt the overwhelming urge to give this story, this FML as the locals are apt to call it, my approval. OP, the comical events you describe have warmed my Grinch-like heart. Bravo.

#66 - On 11/03/2009 at 8:03pm by watisit

I have 2 German Shepherds, once they got bigger I made them outside dogs. YDI for having a 100 lb. dog as an inside dog.

#67 - On 11/03/2009 at 8:11pm by FlaminYawn

That's sad for the dog the used to be indoors and was then banished to the outdoors. I've had German Shepherds all my life, and we've always let the well behaved ones live indoors. As long as they're housebroken, they get to be in the house.

Also, totally not relevant, but a 100 lb German Shepherd is overweight, even if it is male.

uh...your dog didn't leap up at the screen for the milkbone, it was probably the whistle instead. Dogs can't process the images in they way they are shown on a TV

#75 - On 11/03/2009 at 8:34pm by snzizle

yea, its impossible for cats and dogs to see whats on a screen for only the human eye can process the "visible" light, animals see in the different spectrums, so if you knew there was a whistle at the end and you have a dog, mute it fast as you can, both FYL and YDI...

JK! really dude FYL

do any of you have dogs? my dog may not sit and watch tv but if he hears some noise from the tv he will take a look at the screen. Have you seen those kennels that have tvs for dogs in the u.s. too? just because they don't watch tv like humans do doesn't mean they are deaf and blind.

#80 - On 11/03/2009 at 9:07pm by fishyfingaz

my thoughts exactly. 100lb German Shep is overweight.

#86 - On 11/03/2009 at 9:46pm by patticake1601

My dog (boston terrier) sits and watches TV. I think it's cute! Sucks about your TV tho. German Sheps. are great dogs, I'm sure he/she didn't mean to destroy your TV. For all the people saying that YDI for having a dog can go fuck themselves and, hypoxxia: how about you go shot yourself you stupid bitch!

#88 - On 11/03/2009 at 9:58pm by swini

I think that all of people adding their expert opinions on how all dogs and cats cannot see or recognize images on the television are funny. Especially after other people, with no compelling reason to lie, post how their animals see the TV and react to it.

What I really think is that this guy should get his dog to do it again for a video camera and sell it to the milk bone or TV company.

#89 - On 11/03/2009 at 10:11pm by mobilicous

I HATE that commercial!!! My dog always gets really excited and tries to go find the milkbone! (good thing the tv is up on the kitchen counter where he can't reach!!) Then, when he realizes there is no milkbone...he gets all sad and then starts whining. I vote to ban that commercial. Lol.

Too bad your warranty doesn't cover Acts of Dog.

I don't know if this will help or not, but when I was in college, I remember hearing about some students going someplace to donate plasma. Maybe you can hook up with some college students or something and take a collection to get your tv fixed.

Dogs suck.

Awe, fyl, OP. D:

Btw, for those who commented that cats/dogs cannot watch TV, you'd better STFU. My 2 year old cat loves watching TV - I think I still have this one picture of him watching the concert of Jennifer Lopez on my phone. Its super adorable ;)

Sell the shitfactory on legs, get a new TV. If you're not convince, try calculating what that dogs costs each month in food, vet bills, destroyed furniture/electronics etc.

ydi it for having a german shepard.

#123 - On 11/04/2009 at 5:57am by ti3n_t

Look at it this way. At least you have proof that it was a high quality tv!

#124 - On 11/04/2009 at 7:34am by edward713

HAHA! YDI for being a dog lover. Dogs are fucking retarded animals.

#135 - On 11/04/2009 at 7:57pm by bugmenotmofo

Your a fucking retarded animal.

#141 - On 11/05/2009 at 9:05pm by AsAlwaysAndrew

Yeah. I'm calling BULLSHIT on this one.

#136 - On 11/04/2009 at 8:15pm by Ceidu

dogs don't see the same way we do, so the frequency at which a tv refreshes itself looks like a series of flashes to a dog. the dog was not running into the milkbone, your dog is just retarded and ran into a tv he knew was already there. put the thing out of it's misery.

#137 - On 11/04/2009 at 8:55pm by paulblankchoi

At least you know that the commercials are actually true; that the TV makes it seem like you're there! Hope the dog didn't get hurt.

#138 - On 11/05/2009 at 12:33pm by Gloria0416

YDI for having a big fucking dog inside.

#139 - On 11/05/2009 at 5:45pm by ragsy

I laughed.

#140 - On 11/05/2009 at 9:00pm by SeaGhile

Haha I love dogs :D

#142 - On 11/06/2009 at 7:04am by iamseamonster

This is the funniest thing I've seen on here in months. I'm picturing Scooby Doo jumping at the TV for a scooby snack haha.
To all those claiming that dogs can't process tv images... Prove it. I've seen more examples of dogs recognizing images than not. Lol, my favorite was the dude saying you should have googled this before you submitted it. Like Google is the one supreme source of truth, haha.

But yeah that sux about the tv, but at least it's a funny story

#145 - On 11/10/2009 at 5:54am by rckstr475

Write the company and ask them to replace your t.v.. Thanks for the funny image, though.

#146 - On 11/10/2009 at 6:59am by Jaguaress

This should be on MLIA. Who cares about the TV? Your dog is kind of awesome.
