Today, my parents are forcing me to go to an insanely conservative, Christian private school. I'm gay. This is going to be a long year. FML

Hey guys! It's OP here. I'm just here to clear up a few things. First of all, my parents know I'm gay and they don't like that at all. And for the few of you guys saying "there's still gonna be gay kids there, blah blah blah" you're wrong. It's a very small school within the area and only about 250 kids go there. So far, I haven't heard anything about a single gay kid in the entire school. To be honest with you it's just a shitty situation that I can't do much about. But thanks to everybody for the support!

hope you come back with a boyfriend/girlfriend.. that'll show em they cant change who you are

Oh my. Did they tell you why they want you to go there? Is this some misguided attempt to make you stop being gay, or is there a less disturbing reason, like the high quality of the courses at this school? If the reason they want you to go there is something non-crazy, maybe you can propose a reasonable alternative, like a school with an equally high standard of learning, but a more open and accepting atmosphere? Good luck OP.

There are probably going to be WAY more gay kids there than OP's parents realize.

I want to a Catholic school and the president of the schools son was gay. I knew some other gay and lesbian (and bi) students as well. Many weren't 100% open about their sexuality until senior year or later but it was kinda obvious. no one cared as far as I could tell. My school was Xaviarn too. I don't remember what that means exactly except for it is a type of catholic faith and is more conservative than Jesuit. In any case, OP will survive. The school may be super conservative but probably at least a decent chunk of the students are not. Probably some teachers too. They'll be christian probably, the teachers, that is, just not necessarily super conservative. There will probably be some kids that weren't even raised Christian at the school and are just being sent there for a "better" education (not always better depending on which local publics school there are. mine sucked though). And even if the school finds out OP is gay, they probably aren't going to expel him or punish him. The (likely) worst is they'll keep on eye on him. Which would be kinda weird and creepy and presumptive but it won't mar his permanent record or whatever. As expulsions hurt higher education endeavors from examples I saw. Of course, then again, I am in a rather liberal area. IDK what a conservative school is like in the deep south or whatever. So dont quote me on anything.

It is probably to try to get him to see "the error of his ways" e.g. stop being gay. these types of schools usually do not have high quality courses. They usually just have a bunch of stuff tailored towards their religious views. More than likely, though, a bunch of fellow students at the school will be some form of closeted LGBT also

Actually it depends on the school.. A lot of Catholic/private schools are super ahead everyone else and has great "high quality courses". I went to a Catholic elementary school and overall they were at the same speed as every other school, if not a little behind, but when it came to their math classes, they were super ahead. They were at least 2 years ahead everyone else. Our 8th grade class was teaching Algerba 2 which you wouldn't normally take till sophmore year high school.

Where I live, catholic schools have the reputation of being, in general, high-quality schools, which is why quite a lot of parents want their kids to go there, regardless of their religious views. I went to catholic school myself for exactly the same reason, despite our family not being particularly interested in religion. I don't know anything about the reputation of christian schools where OP lives, so this might not at all be the case, but I didn't want to immediately assume the only reason for this choice of school could be religious fundamentalism. (That being said, the school where I went to had the reputation of being strict and conservative, but it turned out to be not such a big deal and I ended up making lovely friends and having a great time there, on top of a good education. So OP, if you really end up going to that school, it might turn out better than you think.)

If you can get past the religious indoctrination and mandatory religious stuff, Catholic Schools can provide a top-notch education..

They're actually usually higher quality.

Actually these schools are better academically normally due to more funds and better teachers

I'm curious about where the hell all these "high quality" religious schools are. The only "high quality" things at the Catholic school my brother went to were the student run gambling ring that included poker and fighting for money, the drug ring, and fencing of stolen goods. The teachers spent more time talking to each other than doing anything remotely teacher-ish, despite the fact they were being hoisted around as the best school in not just the county, but the surrounding counties as well.

#10 - You shouldn't be surprised that Catholic schools students excel at maths. They're all terrified of failing once they notice that in every class they have some guy nailed to a plus sign.

Wow, that really sucks. Have you came out to them or they know about it and are still sending you? Hope you and your parents can work something else out tho, best of luck op

If it's a good Christian school, they shouldn't be judgmental. After all, the point of being a Christian is to love people no matter what their situation is.

That just means we're not completely for gay marriage. It doesn't mean we hate gay people. We are more open minded. Being at a conservative-Christian school would be better because you're less likely to be judged as hard

This my friends is a unicorn. Most conservatives I've meet, and I've lived and traveled all over the U.S. Have said that gays/lesbians should be killed, or at the very least be made to be straight cause it's against god and the Bible.

Conservatives and true Christians are two very different things. You're mistaking beliefs for believers. I don't think that Jesus would have HATED anyone. It's not a Christians job to hate. It's our job to love.

You have not met many conservative then have you. Most do not care

I've studied in a Christian private school myself and imo it didn't really affect my mindset about religion or life whatsoever.. yeah sometimes they emphasize on you to pray or sing carols but that's pretty much it.. I don't think you're gonna find it hard to study there..

Do you honestly think your parents are the only ones with that idea and that you'll be the only gay person there? I doubt it'll be as bad as you think.

Goblin182 26

are your parents hoping the school will Christian the gay out of you?

ryand82 11

I guess they want you to pray the gay away.

Damn some people need to learn to accept their kids for who they are not trying to force them onto another path! Hopefully OP most of the kids there will be rebelling against their parents and hate it just as much as you do

I know that this is a crappy response to the post, but I'm loving how positive most of these reactions are. and <3 to you OP, I hope you find what you need.
