Today, after waiting two weeks for an email with my online textbook access code, it still hadn't arrived in time for my quiz tomorrow, so I ended up spending most of my money on the expensive physical copy. Not long after I got back home, the email finally arrived. FML

Today, the first day of school, I went to the book store to purchase my textbooks. Not only did I wait for 30 minutes, but they didn’t even have my books in stock. I was advised to visit another campus 45 minutes away. They didn’t have it either. I have assignments due already. FML
Today, my first day of college, the textbooks I ordered a month in advance still haven't arrived. My first class of the semester is College Readiness. FML
Today, after attending lectures for months, studying for weeks, and spending hours writing a 15-page research paper, I was informed that due to technological issues during registration, I was not enrolled in the class. FML
Today, after finishing a huge French essay, I realized my printer wasn't working. So, I emailed it to a guy in my class to print and then give to me. When I get to French, he said he had already turned his in early and never got my email. It turned out he used mine. I got an F on the essay. FML
Today, I've been making extremely good progress in my online class. Or at least… I was, until the deadline to complete it was suddenly pushed a whole month forward, causing me to be "behind." Then my teacher had the nerve to email me, telling me I needed to catch up. FML
Today, I went in to take my College Placement tests. I'd spent all week ignoring actual homework to study for these tests. When I got there, the responsible told me that the tests were last week. FML
Today, I accidentally left my textbook at home. Normally this wouldn't be an issue, but today was my class final. Since it was an open-book final, I'd decided not to study for it. I'm pretty sure I failed. FML
Today, I turned in my homework. Too bad I accidentally handed in the printed answer sheet I found online to copy from. FML
Today, I started at a new college. I bought my textbooks and went to my first class only to find out that they changed my schedule without telling me. I'd already opened the book. I could not get $200 back. FML
Today, after having spent all of last night studying for an algebra test, I find out that the test was on a completely different chapter of my textbook. FML

That's how they get you. Wait till the minute you crack and pay an excess amount of money for a book you're going to use for 1 semester and then they come through.

That's why I prefer just looking for the PDF files instead, I normally only need a few pages of the textbook and I'm not going to fork out loads of money for it.

The cost of making the physical product is only part of the cost, even with shipping, etc - most of the production cost is in labour, licensing, etc. This has to be spent whether they print or offer downloads, and specialist books have smaller print runs to spread the cost over. The prices are still the sort of ripoff you only get in a seller'a market, though, and journals are even worse.

It's better to look on Amazon for textbooks. For book buy back they gave me six dollars for one textbook and they didn't take a couple books for some reason. College textbooks are ripoffs.

Always rent if possible. If not, you can sell it to another student yourself and get some back instead of taking the bookstore's "refund".

I have seen renting more expensive than just buying the book. So, not always worth it.

#15, Just shop around for the best price while renting books! I rent most of my books I have no intent ever using again, but do have the option to buy at the end of the term if needed. It is far more cost effective as long as you do not go directly through the school. Third party is best in this case!

I would've contacted Customer Support a lot earlier in reference to the email. If it makes you feel any better, most of the time you can get a refund if you haven't taken the plastic off the book. Personally, I think renting used books is the way to go.
