(0)in a way, i can kinda see the gf's opinion. he's going to be way out of money during and maybe a few years after med school. 1.) OP has to pay for school. 2.) interns don't get paid too well. 3.) OP has to afford food and supplies. in a way, she kind of is thinking in the long run. she knows that it's going to take years (maybe 15+) before they can get married and have a nice wedding and all. she's saving herself and OP pain in the future. i think she wanted to give him and her both a clean break.

(0)I have to agree with 277. Doctors in many fields get paid well, but the return of investment for the education takes quite a while to kick in. I know from personal experience college and 4 years of medical school can put you at least $160,000+ in debt for most people, and that's not bad compared to many doctors I know. And as 277 pointed out, residency (which is at least 3 years- more for non-PCPs) pays $50,000ish per year. She's probably referring to providing financially in the near future... the "near future" being the next 10-15 years.

(0)Three years a long time. I would imagine that the problem stems from the fact that you don't have money. Going to med school means that at minimum you'll spend about 8~10 years in school, and you'll be near your 30s by the time you can even practice. That would require a lot of patience if you want a girl to tag along.
In all seriousness, you should concentrate on school rather than a relationship. Personally, I think having both is going to be hard, and if you do find a girl, she would have to understand patience as you would too especially if you marry or live together.
Just don't stress it. If you get a phd and practice, I can bet you're going to find many great gals out there. Most of the time, school relationships just don't work out when reality hits.

The funny thing was after about 6 months he sees her in a busted rust bucket of a car with her new boyfriend while he is driving in a Range Rover. The school isn't gonna tell them as long as they keep giving them money, and their parents are probably just as deluded about their son's abilities. I think this sounds like the girl finally gave up on the delusional deadbeat. I also think there are perfectly valid reasons to want a guy who will make money (although, there are bad reasons too, for sure).
I want to home school my children, so I know I'll need a man who will make enough money to support a family mostly by himself. A woman (or man) who dreams of being a teacher or working for a nonprofit, etc. would also need a man with a little money. (Right now I'm a teacher working for a nonprofit, I work 60 hours a week and make 11 thousand a year). I've refused a relationship with both an accounting major and a med student for financial reasons. They both laughed at me. Then they both dropped out of college. One manages Target, the other was homeless last I heard. I knew that, regardless of their impressive-sounding majors, these guys weren't going anywhere. On the other hand, I did date a guy with no college degree who grew up below the poverty level and worked at a pizza place. He became the marketing director for a popular national pizza place at age 22. Again, I could tell he WAS going places. He still is. (Unfortunately he's also an ass, so I l had to leave him).
When something sounds this crazy, there's usually a reason.

If you've already been accepted into medical school, you've demonstrated to a highly trained admissions committee that you have what it takes to become a competent physician. They don't take people who are kidding themselves; it's a competitive market, and very few people drop out of medical school.
We're not talking about undergraduate dropouts; we're talking about a guy who I'm willing to assume actually got accepted into medical school.

Once you get into medical school, well over 95% of students that start out in their first year will graduate and become physicians. Pre-meds are generally the ones that drop medicine/drop out/et cetera. There are many reasons for this, but I don't have time to go into this. I have an anatomy lab to be at in twenty minutes.

Honestly if your going to medical school now and the other guys is all ready a business owner she probably is better off financially with the business owner. Think about it he'll be selling cell phones for a while and he's making money now. When do you think you'll even pay off your school debt? It may take a while. Remember even less glamourous businesses can make alot of money. Your ex girl friend is a gold digging slut and she'll probably divorce this guy for his money and she was going to do thak to you. Her reason is bogus if you ask me. Money is never the issue, security is. So rather than be with someone that may or may not finish medical school and may or may not have a ton of student loans, a person that already owns a small business with little to no debt may be the better option at the time.
