There's nothing wrong with online dating. For all you hostile people who are against online dating, I just want to say it can turn out FANTASTIC. I met my boyfriend online and we're very compatible and going on our 3rd anniversary soon, that's better than a lot of people who use tranditional dating means if you ask me!
That being said, don't go all in unless you REALLY know who that person is! It worked out for my boyfriend and I because we weren't dumb enough to assume anything! I joked that he was probably a registered sex offender, and he said I was most likely a transvestite. We were both relieved when we first talked on the phone ("hey you're really a guy/girl and you sound like the age you said you are!") and then when we met up ("you're REAL!"). We both had an "emergency plan" worked out with our perspective GROUP of friends in case things get out of control...so...as long as you are cautious, I don't see anything bad with online dating at all.

1. You don't meet anyone under 18, and ask for proof first. Going to meet a 17 year old is stupid.
2. You don't meet anyone you haven't spoken with on the phone for at least a few weeks. Email and texting isn't enough. Even if you talk with someone on the phone, there's no guarantee that it's the person you think it is.
3. You don't fly to meet anyone unless you have hotel arrangements made, a refundable ticket, and people in your life have all the details of the person, including name, physical address, phone number, and a picture. You never know if the person is going to be the next internet killer.
That being said, I have met people from online and the worst thing that happened was they turned out to be jerks. If you take your time and talk on the phone for months, in addition to email/texting, you learn more about the person - but of course, not as much as spending a lot of actual, face to face, time with them.

In the United States, age of consent is governed by state law. In California, age of consent is 18. However, sex with minors over sixteen and less than three years younger than the older person is legal - this is called a closeness of age clause. So, assuming the OP is sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, or twenty, having sex with 'Courtney' would have been legal.

either you're young enough that 17 is acceptable, in which case you're probably in high school and shouldn't be flying to meet an online date, but should be involved in relationships with people you know, and probably should have some parental guidance on how unbelievably awkward it is that someone so young fly to meet an internet date.... or you're older and you might have a reason for using internet to help you meet people, such as crazy work hours and kids etc. making it difficult to meet people, in which case it's totally unacceptable to be flying to meet a 17yo.
