I see it as being kind of thoughtful. If he knew he was going to break up with you in a year anyway, maybe he was trying to spare your feelings. Usually the longer a couple is together, the closer they are. It's possible he just didn't want you to become more attached then you already are.

I don't really understand why he would break up with you just because he was going to college.

It seems like you will be better off without him. You'll find the right guy soon.
