Truthfully it's not hard to know the difference between a little boy and a midget. Midgets have arms and legs which are very short, large heads, and look like mini-me. (No offense) Little boys are usually skinny (or fat) and have arms and legs which are at a normal length for their height.

Man, that sucks. Okay, so you can sort of tell even from behind if you look close enough--but who expects to see a midget wandering around? Your brain goes immediately to "kid." So it's not really your fault--if he was pissed, he needs to develop a thicker skin. I'm not a midget, but I am very short (4'9") and I try not to get mad at the people who make those kinds of mistakes, but just at the situation that made the mistake possible.

Come on guys, for just a quick glance from the back it's an easy mistake. You don't expect to see midgets all over the place, when you see a short person you think it's a kid until you see them in more detail, and especially from the front. The OP was just trying to be nice and help what she thought was a poor lost kid.

Well depending on the age, but I remember getting lost once and being on the verge of tears because I didn't know where anyone/anything was or how I was going to find my family again... and I was only lost a minute. I mean granted I may have been a total wimp of a child but it's still legitimately scary being lost, so it's hardly rude to ask where the parents were. Besides there's also the possibility that the kid ran off from the parents and was grabbing stuff he wasn't supposed to/would get hurt by trying to reach and considering he was aiming for something on the top shelf it's not necessarily a bad assumption. And don't tell me this doesn't happen, I've seen it, children aren't always the smartest cookies in the jar, and yes it does potentially lead to them damaging themselves or the store.

Aw, that sucks for the OP. But I think I might've done something similar in the same situation, because kids shouldn't be unattended in a grocery store, and a little person could easily look like a kid from behind. Also, just want to point out, it wouldn't be the greatest idea to ask a kid if they need help reaching something because their mother could find you handing the item to their child and become angry if they see a stranger giving something to their kid (especially if she told her kid not to get the item, like if it was candy or something). just pointing that out though, because I know that that obviously wasn't the case in this scenario

I agree with #31, IMO YDI for going to that word, it's very offensive to many people in the dwarfism community. I am not a dwarf, but my sister is and I have many friends who also have dwarfism and I know all of them are highly offended by the term. The way a lot of them describe the offensiveness of the word is that what the n-word is to black people is what the m-word is to most dwarfs. Don't use it.
Sometimes it is hard to tell. Really it isn't your fault at all. If anything you could apologize after that had happened and I think he would understand.
