Today, I found the source of the bad smell that has been plaguing me for the past two weeks in my apartment. The police knocked on my door asking if I've seen my neighbor recently. I haven't. The smell has been that of a dead person. It's a smell that even Febreze can't remove. FML

I actually had a similar experience. I noticed my neighbors back door was open every time I went outside for three days and thought nothing of it it was open a lot. But it was open that night and I noticed all the lights were out. Turns out he had a heart attack. It's shocking when something like this happens unexpectedly. Not everyone keeps tabs on their neighbor. I didn't even know my neighbors until the second or third year of living there. I still wouldn't realize they went missing if I hadn't seen them for two weeks, because that isn't uncommon. I would've investigated the smell though.
This sounds a lot like something from 'Lullaby' though, where the guy kills his neighbor and the body sits there for days, but maybe I'm the only one. At least it wasn't the apartment above yours — There'd be a body stain on your ceiling.

I can easily believe this happened. Not the OP's fault. I do not, however, believe that Febreze couldn't get rid of the smell. After three days of heavy Febreze crop dusting, you shouldn't be able to smell anything.
I think your real problem is the whole your neighbor is dead thing, not the smell in your apartment.

DUDE! The same thing happened to my best friend last year. His neighbor in the apartment below died and wasn't found for two weeks. Here are a few things:
1) you don't realize at first because it's not terribly strong, smells like bad garbage. It wasn't until the police found him and OPENED the apartment that the smell fills and kills.
2) it will NOT just clear away easily. It sticks to EVERYTHING. It stuck to everything my friend owned, and he even brought it to the office with him and for a week our office smelled like a morgue.
3) Febreeze will NOT work. Never. If it's really bad you will need to use a special gasing or professional cleaning. Human decomp does NOT just drift away, it's a TERRIBLE cleaning process. Your neighbor's place will need to be stripped down and professionally cleaned to have a CHANCE of it going away.
4) my friend ultimately had to move to a new apartment. The complex waited a month to clean the man's apartment, and no matter how hard my friend cleaned, the smell always came right back. When we were helping him move 6 weeks later, I could still smell it hovering around the area.
5) if it's stuck in your clothes, try washing your clothes with vinegar, it helped for him.
6) you will NEVER mistake that smell again. Ever. Nothing else compares to it and you will never forget it. Sorry to hear you are going through it. I only smelled it for a short time and THAT was unbearable.

That does suck. I had to help clean out one side of a duplex with a friend/ landlord. Trust me the smell of a person that’s been dead for 2 or 3 weeks will NEVER come out. Even the clothing I was wearing had to be thrown out... did get some nice tools though... sad when a person that has no family dies... unless you can get some good stuff out of it ;)

My dad lives in an apartment and he hardly knows any of his neighbors. He's been there since January.

We had a horrible odor penetrating my apartment to the point that we thought someone had died, and the police come and thought that someone had too, so they started ripping up apartments. But they didn't find any dead humans. they ripped up the ceiling in my kitchen and found a dead raccoon.

Let's break this down. Apartment indicates a single unit inside a building with mulitple separate living quarters. Neighbor indicates someone that lives near you. Died means someone has ceased to exist.
The original Poster did NOT say anyone was murdered, he did not say anyone was found INSIDE his apartment dead. I'm amazed at how people take a teeny bit of information and add their own assumptions to complete the story.
Finally - how many people know what a decomposing corpse smells like? I wouldn't think for a second to call 911 and say "Uhm yeah, my apartment stinks, could my neighbor be dead?"

on a long enough timeline the survival rate for everyone drops to zero. you don't have to feel bad for every schmuck that dies. and plenty of people don't keep tabs on their neighbors. i hardly ever see mine. although, if there was an odd lingering smell, the first thing i would think of is when i saw him/his car last, but i'm morbid and that's where my mind goes. my neighbor across the hall died when we lived in our first apartment, but we didn't really know the guy so it was just like "oh shit, that guy's dead? wow." life must be pretty difficult for those of you who feel the need to be sad and worked up every time ANYONE dies.

Unless he died in some horrible, bloody mess then it's unlikely that you'd smell him /her after only two weeks. With the human diet what it is today, we rot REALLY slowly.

I honestly would not know if most of my neighbors up and disappeared (and some of them I wish they WOULD). And if you've never smelled a dead body before, it's unlikely that you're going to immediately assume the worst and call the police. My apartment gets some weird unidentifiable smell coming through my bathroom wall every other day or so, but I don't go calling the police or anything.

His neighbor was probably elderly and/or stayed in a lot if nobody noticed for two weeks, and if he stayed in a lot then the OP probably didn't really know him/her. Sucks for all involved though.

TIP: place opened containers of coffee grounds around your apartment, this will get rid of the smell. I work for the coroners office and deal with decomps daily. This always works for us and I'm always knee deep in it!!

All the people who can't understand that the smell of a decaying body will go through walls and stick to the walls & rooms all around, are morons. Obviously the body isn't in the OP's place!!
They are also morons for not realizing that people die all over the world all the time, in their houses/apartments/and so on, and decay until someone finds them, usually either because they miss hearing from them, or because a neighbor calls the cops due to the smell. What, did you think people know when they'll die and go to some special place to do it?? It happens anywhere, often where they live.
Usually, it takes a few days before someone notices, in some cases longer. (In a horrible case I heard of, several years...) It's not the OP's fault nor does he has any reason to feel bad for disliking the smell in his place.
I hope the landlord will do something about it, because otherwise, considering the body decayed for a long time, the uhm eww, decomposing juices going into the boards in the ground will leave a residual smell... Though that would mostly suck for anyone moving to their place, it won't be so bad in your place. After some time, that is.
You probably should have called the police or something to check on the smell sooner though. 2 weeks is quite a bit, and with such a strong smell, you might have been able to guess it wasn't an animal or something. Unless they were in a farther room not so close to your wall maybe. :-/
Now you know for the next time! (If you live around a lot of old people living alone this knowledge might come in handy...)

To all the people saying the true FML is for the family: obviously that family didn't care enough about the dead person to go without contact for at least two weeks. artificial cinnamon is the scent that counteracts the smell of a rotting body, every smell has an "anti-smell" which neutralizes it. It just so happens that rotting bodies and cinnamon hearts go together... good luck with the stench ;)

A similar thing happened when i was thirteen. My mom managed an apartment complex, and a man's rent was overdue. He was late for a reason. Very late.
Anyway, try Ozium™ to kill the smell... it is usually available in the automotive section of department stores in the U.S. Spray and entire can every day for 3 days, and the smell is as dead as the poor person is. Good luck.

That's rather selfish that you're worried about the smell, when they died and no family members or friends noticed.
However, I'd like to point out to people saying YDI for not checking on your neighbour 'cause you didn't see him/her around, that I can go days without seeing/hearing my brother, and not only do we live in the same house, we share a bedroom wall.
