Today, while running on the treadmill at the gym, the girl next to me slipped and went flying back against the wall. Indecisive whether to get off and help her or to just keep going, I lost my focus and footing and flew back next to her. FML

33 / alyssa: Not everyone who slips and falls wants help. It's embarrassing enough to go flying off the treadmill, but then have everyone focus on your blunder just makes it worse.
It's easy to see why the OP stopped to consider whether or not to help. It's hard to tell which would have been the more courteous thing to do without being there.
The FML is that, while trying to decide how to be nice.... BLAM! Ha! It's a good reminder, though, to take care of your own stuff before you worry about other people. That's actually EXACTLY why they say that on planes. You aren't much help to anyone else if you get yourself hurt, in any situation. See someone with a flat? Pull over CAREFULLY and walk back. Don't rear-end someone rubbernecking and trying to decide to help. The possibilities are endless.
I don't see this as a YDI, though. It only takes a split second for that treadmill to fling you off. ;)

#34: Yes, some people might not want help. But the "most courteous thing to do" there was definitely to ask if the girl was okay. If she's laughing, or getting up without trouble, or says that she doesn't want help, then the OP could go on with his/her business. If he/she looked back and the girl looked like she was in pain or was having trouble standing up or something, then he/she could help her up or get an employee or whatever.
I was walking once and saw a guy completely wipe out on his skateboard. I didn't rush to him or make a scene, but my first instinct was to ask if he was okay. He waved me off and said he was fine, and he looked a little embarrassed, so I kept walking. He didn't want help, but at least I asked.

#34, if for some reason OP was using a treadmill on a plane...then your argument would be valid. Otherwise, there's no relevance on what you said. OP wasn't in an immediate danger that he/she needed to take care of his/herself first, it was OP's lack of coordination that caused him/her to fall.
#96, it is human nature to help someone in pain/in need. But Western society places a stigma on that type of behavior. Certain laws actually state that you HAVE to ask if a person wants to be helped or not...if you don't ask and act to help a person (even save their life) they can technically sue you.

Your body/car/motorcycle goes where your eyes go. It's an old saying and it's quite true. When you're walking along and you see someone wipe out, you aren't doing anything that requires much coordination or effort. You just stop walking and ask.
But when you're on a treadmill and you turn your head or slow down, the treadmill doesn't just stop. It keeps right on trucking. You quickly get disoriented because YOU are used to walking on solid ground that behaves completely differently. You then lose your balance and get thrown against the wall.
That's why it happened to two people inside of 5 seconds. We'll never know what distracted the first faller, but the first one CAUSED the second one to fall. It was all the more distracting because the OP was thinking about something else in the first place. (Nobody THINKS about running on a treadmill. You just run and think about other stuff.) Suddenly being wrenched away from your own thoughts to consider the correct thing to do is all it takes to land you on your own ass.
So show a little compassion. The OP didn't fall because s/he DIDN'T care. S/he fell because s/he DOES care, but was thinking about something else when it all began.

not really a ydi.. i seriously doubt most people jump to the aid of everyone they see who might need help, and plus you were running, i know when im in the middle of a set or running i dont want to have to stop halfway through, it ruins that whole exercise. the only way i would have stopped would be if i thought she was rather cute, and i was looking for someone. but still, im personally not really attracted to someone uncoordinated enough to fall on a treadmill.

To all you YDI people, I still say that you should consider what I wrote above regarding awkward social situations, but also how FAST all this happened. The whole thing probably took only three seconds. The OP probably didn't have time to really "think through" the whole thing, but was just starting to consider things when BLAM!
It takes a person at least a couple of seconds to react to the unexpected. That's also how long it takes to end up on your ass when you're on a treadmill and get distracted.
It's not that complicated, people. Just put yourself in the OP's shoes and it makes perfect sense.
