Today, I finally received the phone call I had been waiting on for years. The agency who is trying to approach my father in an attempt for me to get in contact with him called me with the news that they found him. Too bad he died about 25 years ago, so he can't consent with making himself known. FML

A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Today, I got a missed call from my dad, who hasn't talked to me in months and has vowed not to have anything to do with me. I called him back excitedly and apologized for missing his call, and we had a 20-second conversation about how his phone accidentally dialed my number. FML
Today, I finally got a phone call from a publisher saying they would publish the book I'd written. I'd gotten loads of rejection letters, so I was so excited. Until I realized it was my dad, feeling sorry for me. FML
Today, I received a message from front desk that my concerned father is trying to contact me. I call only to hear that my parents were freaking out that I wasn't answering my phone. They saw me 9 hours ago. They were going to call the police. I'm in college and also don't live with them anymore. FML
Today, my father, who I haven't spoken to in over 12 years, contacted me. He just wanted to let me know that I should get tested for a rare neurological disease. The only thing the man has given to me since my conception is potentially a death certificate. FML
Today, I got the guts to call my dad for the first time in nine years. He said he "almost didn't remember" he "had another daughter." Another? FML
Today, I received a call from the company I applied to, only to have my father pick it up and make fun of the man's accent. They won't call me back or take any of my calls, and my dad is completely unapologetic. FML
Today, my father called me for the first time in two weeks since I moved away. Excited, I answered the phone. It was a mistake. He thought he'd called my sister. FML
Today, a telemarketer called my house phone and asked for my grandpa. We were in the middle of having his wake. FML
Today, I contacted my biological father, after not speaking to him for some years, as we had a very strained relationship. I received an automated response. It's probably the best conversation we have ever had. FML
Today, I finally had a phone call after a week of nothing. It was my mother. It was by accident. FML

Your "real" father and/or mother is whoever raised you. I am sorry that it turned out this way, but in a great many cases birth fathers or mothers are reluctant to meet their offspring that they did not raise. There is alway a reason that a birth parent stayed out of the life of children that they may have created. Most times it's just that they were unready, unable, or unwilling to raise a child, at least at that point in their lives... Sometimes people get fantasies that their birth parent or parents are going to make their lives somehow more complete. But it's usually just a fantasy. If they couldn't take care of you as a child, why think that they are magically now going to make your life better somehow... By the way, I am an adoptive father. The hard work of being a parent is caring for and raising that child when they needed someone to love and care for them - not in fertilizing an egg and then taking off. Not all parents either by birth or adoption are great parents, but the ones who stuck with you as you grew up are your "real" parents.
