Today, we bought our first home after months of searching and years of saving. It's directly in the path of Hurricane Irma and may be destroyed before we even get the chance to move in. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Lemons
Today, my husband and I were finally about to put our house on market because we have killed our savings on moving and two mortgages for the past couple of months. Then the pipes burst. Awesome. FML
Today, my wife and I are about to move across the country when the landlord for our new house called and said a water line busted and flooded the house. The movers are coming tomorrow. FML
The old switcheroo
Today, I was supposed to close on a house. Unfortunately, our lender decided that they couldn't finance us and denied us a loan, after 3 months of us digging up paperwork, saving money, and packing. Now we have to scramble to find a new place, while our insane landlady screams at us. FML
Lemon or haunted?
Today, our boiler broke. Yesterday, it was our fridge. The day before that, the deck collapsed, and a few weeks ago the dishwasher flooded the kitchen. This is after we spent a ton of money to have the house gutted due to a mold problem. We only bought the house a year ago, and have lived in it even less. We need to move. FML
Preapproved
Today, after saving for years, I was finally ready to buy a home. I found a decent place. I put in an offer. A hedge fund bought it 7 minutes later, for cash. FML
Today, we started building our dream house. Next to my parents-in-law. FML
Today, workers came to my house to fix residual moisture damage in my walls left behind by Hurricane Irma. Said workers then burst a water pipe and flooded my entire apartment in the time it took figure out how to turn it off. FML
Today, my mom sold our electronic stuff to pay for hurricane shutters. We live in Chicago. FML
Today, I'm still not living in the house I fought so hard to buy three months ago. As I was fixing a hole in the wall, I found black mold covering the back side of my drywall. On every wall. I can't afford to fix it. FML
My new house
Today, I bought my first house, blowing nearly all my savings on the deposit. I had left myself enough for just a couple of necessary bits of furniture. It turns out the previous owner completely stripped the house when he left, taking the oven and even the toilet with him, amongst other things. FML

1) Some policies don’t take effect until 30 or 60 days after they are purchased. 2) For some, the maximum payout for flood insurance doesn’t cover the cost of rebuilding. 3) Collecting insurance can take a long time.

location location location. always think about natural disasters before buying a home.

wow
rebeccac12 18
why wow? I'm pretty sure any adult who is buying a house would look into the locations history and see that the area is frequented by hurricanes. this only makes sense to do when investing your hard earned money into a home.

Good luck finding anywhere in the US that isn't prone to natural disasters: tornados, hurricanes, blizzards, earthquakes, wildfires, a ginormous ******* volcano that's overdo for a super eruption...
rebeccac12 18
that is true. however a hurricane will demolish a house as will a tornado or earthquake. a super volcano has not gone off so the chances of that are least likely and a blizzard nay do some damage, but not to level the house. again, choose a location wisely and you will run into fewer problems.

Good luck to you and everyone already and still yet to be affected by this disaster. The damage already done is truly awful.

It's already awful for all the people affected by the hurricane and the damages that it will leave behind! Do you have insurance? Does it cover natural disasters? It's definitely distressing and depressing news to you. To lose a new house before moving into it! Hope you are safe at least away from the hurricane.
