Today, my wife and I are about to move across the country when the landlord for our new house called and said a water line busted and flooded the house. The movers are coming tomorrow. FML

Today, my husband and I were finally about to put our house on market because we have killed our savings on moving and two mortgages for the past couple of months. Then the pipes burst. Awesome. FML
Today, the water stopped working in our apartment. We are supposed to be moving into a new place tomorrow, so we asked the landlord if we could move in a day early. Upon arrival, we found that the water tank needed to be installed, so there's no water here either. We are now admitting defeat and checking into a hotel. FML

Today, we woke up to two inches of water in our finished basement, which my wife and I use it as our bedroom. The plumber found roots in our sewer line. The kicker: we just bought the house four days ago. FML
Today, our boiler broke. Yesterday, it was our fridge. The day before that, the deck collapsed, and a few weeks ago the dishwasher flooded the kitchen. This is after we spent a ton of money to have the house gutted due to a mold problem. We only bought the house a year ago, and have lived in it even less. We need to move. FML
Today, after moving into my new house, my partner's father came to give us his old sofa. Now, an hour before he has to leave, he's half-completed 3 DIY jobs we didn't want done in the first place, and smashed my water inlet pipe. I have no water and a destroyed kitchen. FML
Today, my apartment burned to the ground. I was packed and ready to move out tomorrow. FML
Today, workers came to my house to fix residual moisture damage in my walls left behind by Hurricane Irma. Said workers then burst a water pipe and flooded my entire apartment in the time it took figure out how to turn it off. FML
Today, I came home from my aunt's funeral to find my basement flooded due to a sewer backup. FML
Today, I came home from work to find my house was flooded from a broken pipe under the sink. My house had just recently had new wood floors, carpet and electrics installed because 6 months earlier my house had been flooded by the same pipe breaking. FML

The landlord should try to make as much progress as they can before you get there.If anything, an apartment and a local storage service may help, hope it works out!

If you're moving cross-country, the moving truck will take several days to make the trip (I moved from Washington State to NY State and the truck took five days). The new place should have the water problem under control by the time your things arrive.

I think this is only partially true depending on the amount of water damage. They can probably get the pipes fixed, but there could have to rip up carpet and damaged sub-flooring and replace those. And if the leak was on the second floor (like it happened to my cousins) then it could have not only gone through the floor but damaged any wiring and lighting for the pot lights, have to replace the ceiling and whatever it damaged on the floor below as well. Unfortunately that would take more than 5 days. Hopefully it was only a little bit of damage that can be fixed before Op gets there or they can at least make it livable in the meantime. Definitely ask the landlord if there's insurance to cover a place to stay while it gets repaired Op.

It very well could be. Some landlords are dodgy. We were asked to move out of our place because the owners wanted to move in. When I went sign the papers for the bond I saw that they had listed the place to rent again for another $20 a week. If they had just been honest with us we would have paid the extra money because we only needed to be in that town for another 7 months. The hassle of moving and finding another place was a huge pain in the butt. Had our revenge eventually. One of the owners applied for a very lucrative contract with our business several years later. Turned them down and told them why, and that honestly was an important part of a business relationship. If they are going to be dishonest and screw over good tenants for $20 a week, how could we trust them in a working relationship.

Move everything into a storage facility or warehouse near your new house for a few days until the flood has been contained and cleared up. Stay in a cheap hotel for a week until everything is sorted out, best compromise I can think of atm.
