Today, my new job isn't all I expected it to be. It's become clear that the previous girl didn't do her job for 6 months, which means that the international CEOs have gotten involved, and I'm the lucky winner of an in-depth internal audit as a result. FML
flammaefata tells us more.

OP here... Woohoo! So there is a bright side to this - my first FML got published! I'll think of all of you next week when I'm being grilled :P And yes, at least I have the benefit of not being to blame for everything that came before me. But that excuse will only last that long, and obviously I intend to be on top of all of this instead of hiding behind someone else's mistakes. Well, back to work preparing for the crazy audit... Btw I'm from South Africa and not USA as it says.

They can't hold you responsible for her incompetence. Just make sure to tell them that you just started doing this job.

It's still a massive hassle, though, even if OP doesn't get the blame.

They can hold you responsible for you attitude. If the previous person also trained OP, they can hold her responsible for learning to do the job correctly - and fire her if she doesn't or if they feel she can't. It's always in your best interest to be co-operative.

Can't and shouldn't are two completely different things.

Think hard about how you can ensure things are done better, OP, and keep giving them fixes going forward as the problems come up. This isn't your fault, but you can help them see you're part of the solution.

Just make sure to be very clear which work is yours and which work is prior to you. One great way to make sure you don't get blamed for anything is to be "concerned" that you may have been making errors in your work or not doing it right, because of these issues and ask for feedback. They'll appreciate your integrity and willingness to work through this.

Fixed the country. Good luck with the audit!

Thank you kitty! (Cali) I believe this doubles the posts from South Africa - today, two FMLs, tomorrow, the world! Oh wait, it's not showing when you go to http://www.fmylife.com/world/za - maybe have a look at that as well?

Make sure there's a paper trail for everything you've done versus what your predecessor did--that way you have hard proof if they accuse you of making a mistake that wasn't yours. CYA brother! (Cover Your Ass) Hope it all works out--it sounds like you're going to be way better than the person before you!

I really hope they're paying you more for all the extra hours and effort you're going to put it.

Just make sure that you let them know that you are more then capable of fixing the previous girls problems, you could be the next Wonder Women.

This happened to my wife. They fired her after 6 weeks of not getting everything caught up, and doing her job. Fired her replacement after 4 weeks for same thing.

While the audit process is happening, just repeat after me (internally, use your inner monologue. DO NOT SAY ALOUD) *To the tune of Row Row Row your boat* ****, ****, ****-a-duck. Screw a kangaroo! Fingerbang an Orangutang, what a day at the zoo... *Repeat as needed to remain calm*

Awesome! Now I just have to not burst out laughing at inopportune moments.
