Today, my computer stopped connecting to the corporate network. I know what the problem is, but our tech support is so clueless that the only thing they do is utter the dreaded words, "Did you try turning it off and back on?" Meanwhile my boss is yelling at me for not getting any work done. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Unionize!
Today, at work, my computer started acting up. I told my boss I could fix it, but he told me to call the IT department instead. Neither the IT technician or his supervisor could figure it out, so I showed them what was wrong and how to fix it. I was promptly fired for wasting 2 hours of company time. FML
Stumped
Today, I was trying to turn on my computer and couldn't. I spent twenty minutes trying to figure out what was wrong when I finally called my husband for help and made him leave work. He came in, looked at the wall, and plugged it back in. The look on his face said it all. FML
Today, I had to explain to my boss that using a wired connection instead of wifi won't stop his computer from getting viruses. He looked at me, open-mouthed and wide-eyed, like he was a 13-year-old boy and I was a pair of tits. Then he called me clueless and told me to get back to work. FML
Asked and answered
Today, after a 16-hour day fixing the computer network at my workplace, I didn't even get a "Thank you". I did, however, get people whining about how, "That computer crap never works" and, "Why do we need IT anyway?" FML
Today, due to technical problems, I had to call the company's IT-support as my computer went totally haywire. I explained via phone that I couldn't access anything. The support then tried contacting me by e-mail and got upset with me when I didn't answer. FML
Not so tech savvy
Today, I called Tech Support because the computer program wouldn't let me open files for my online classes. After an hour, and being walked through the downloading process multiple times. There was a pause and he said, "You're a fucking idiot." and hung up. It still won't work. FML
Occam's razor
Today, I called tech support because my new computer wasn’t turning on. After a long while on the phone, they finally asked if it was plugged in. It wasn’t. I spent way too long troubleshooting with a dead device because I never plugged it into the outlet. FML
Windows 95
Today, I got written up for filing a complaint against IT for unplugging my computer while I was on my lunch break. I found out because one of my workmates warned me. I work with a computer so old, it takes about 40 minutes to get it running. The company refuses to update the equipment, because "it's unnecessary." FML
Today, my 70-year-old coworker managed to do something to our shared computer for it to not boot up. This is our 4th computer since we've been working together, and he refuses to believe that he's the problem. FML
Assumptions
Today, my boss yelled at me for not being able to fix his computer. I’m not in IT, I wasn’t hired to have anything to do with IT, but he assumes that because I’m the youngest woman in the building and look like a nerd that I’m automatically a computer expert. I don’t even own my own computer at home. FML

Maybe you should try turning it off and back on again. Oh, just kidding. Your boss sounds like an unreasonable person.

This is why when I call my company's IT department I say "this is the problem and I already tried turning it off then back on." Throws 'em for a loop

Having worked in tech care, that's actually the first step all the time because what happens if you've left your computer/mobile on for a long time is as new connections are made to the network, your connection slowly filters down the list, and restarting brings you back up to the top, ie. better connection.

That's not how computers work, but nonetheless a reboot is always a good first course of action. (this pc probably needed a reconfiguration requiring two separate reboots).

Yeah, working IT we hear that a lot. "Heh -- just so you know, I already turned it on and off, hah!" What we hear from the same people, almost as often, is "huh -- well, it seems all right now. I guess it fixed itself" when we remote-restart their machines. We usually come up with some BS reason why we're executing the restart, since it's never worth it to say "but I can see your uptime, and your computer's been on since 9 this morning."

Most tech support personnel think like that because a simple reset is usually the problem. If you know the problem, why don't you just fix it yourself?

I am guessing the OP did not have admin privileges.
Shrike 24
Never worked in an office, have you? Even if it could be fixed locally, the accounts are almost certainly limited privilege.

I worked in an office in environment for a very short period. I was actually written up for fixing a network problem that IT couldn't fix. The real world doesn't apply to places like that. It's really sad.

As others have said, OP may just not be able to do it themselves because of not having permission. Another thing that may be a set back is they don't know HOW to fix it exactly. There's many times where you know the problem, and you know where to go, but not how to get there. It's kind of confusing to explain. Hopefully that makes sense to someone. lol

you just tell them, or suggest a solution, and it's fixed. It's not hard to get past that shit unless it's the IT person that won't listen

If it's such a simple fix, do it yourself. Otherwise, go through the motions of tech support and eventually they might get you to the source of the problem and help you through it.
skitzymew 19
Have you ever talked on the phone with Tech Support before?
Rosebudx 32
Yes, actually, and they've always made me go through all the baby steps of turning it off and on, checking to make sure my wifi is turned on, etc., and then we generally get to the source of the problem once they've ascertained it's not something braindead simple. It takes a while is all.
girlrome 19
Well, did you?

Seems like your username would be more fitting for your boss, OP.
INDYSTRUCTABLE 43
wait... so why didn't you just fix it yourself?
iAlissa 34
OP said they knew what the problem was. However OP did not say that he knew how to fix it.
Ins0mau 20
He wouldn't have an admin account (password). Most of the time in an office the system is locked down. You may know how to fix something but you're rarely allowed to. Or it may be a problem from the server end which again, he can't access.

Your tech support certainly isn't being very supportive. I hate it when things like this happen, sorry OP.

Speak up then!

The Boss doesn't care about things like that! IT is like the weather, you just have put up with it.
Stiggy626 25
Yeah that definitely helps a business in a technologically-based world.... "just deal with it till it fixes itself, like cars! "
