Today, my boss asked me to work over the entire weekend. That would be fine if I didn't already work a 60 hour week. He also said the extra hours on the weekend wouldn't be paid. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, my boss asked me if I could work this weekend, doing the work of 2 people, for almost no extra pay. I had a weekend out with my kids planned, so I said I couldn't. My boss called it a shitty excuse, yet gave a free pass to a guy who claimed he had a "phobia of working on weekends". FML
Not getting it
Today, I got into an argument with my boss about the importance of a decent work/life balance. He then asked me to work overtime on a Saturday. FML
Today, my boss asked me to pick up more waitressing shifts because we are short-staffed. I already work seven days a week. FML
Cost effective
Today, my boss told me I’m doing too much overtime, and that it’s draining our budget. I never volunteer for overtime, I don’t need it. Every bit of overtime I do is shit he says I have to do to meet deadlines, most of which are just the parts of his job he can’t be bothered to learn how to do himself. FML
Today, after informing my boss that I needed stress leave from my 70-hour-a-week shifts, I got my new work assignment. Sixty hours a week, starting at 2 a.m. FML
Today, I finished working a week's overtime managing admin, stock, finances, and three members of staff. I realised that despite all my extra work, I actually earn less per hour than the students who only work on the weekends. FML
TFI Friday
Today, I started a new job. The hours are long, but I didn't mind as I could REALLY use the overtime. Turns out, they don't pay over time. I'm just expected to go "above and beyond for the company." FML
Management 101
Today, I once again got less than 20 hours of work for the entire week. My boss's solution? Double the staff. FML
Cutthroat
Today, my boss asked that I add the work of our third coworker's position to my shift because he's never finished his duties. She gave us a 50 cent raise to "babysit" a 60-ish year-old man. I responded to respectfully fire him or pay me 20/hr. His last day is Friday and he doesn't even know yet. FML
The value of labor
Today, after working for over a decade at the same place, I was formally written up with two days of leave without pay for refusing to work extra overtime. I've been working over 80 hours a week for four months now and even cancelled some very important plans so I could work every day. FML

He's not even thankful for the hard work and hours you've put in! Isn't it illegal for the company not to pay you for your time worked anyway? I hope you said no. It sounds like you're exhausted. Good luck!

Sometimes you can't do that

The laws pertaining to work may be a lot different in the UAE than they are in America. It may be hard to come across a job, and he/she may get fired for not working extra.

I thought there was a shortage of workers?

#24, OP said that they "asked" so if the boss asked then OP does in fact have the option of saying no
Oh_bother44 11
52, sometimes the "asking" is a formality with the underlying implication that saying "no" could put you out of a job

Unless this is your uncle who also happens to be your boss - you should respectfully decline.
fakedsincerity 32
...why would it being their uncle matter?
AyeJay101 25
In situations like these, which I've been in myself, it's usually some family member that owns a place and wants their younger family member work for free
fakedsincerity 32
I'd probably be more likely to say no to a family member because I'd expect them, of all people, not to take advantage of me.

Given the person is from UAE, culture is different there, you can't just deny an elder
fakedsincerity 32
Ah. Didn't look at the place. Good point.

A lot of "on call" work isn't paid if you get paid salary rather than hourly.
Blesst 15
Don't forget this is in the United Arabia emrites so the laws mighty be different around what they pay yo for
WAKingUP91 11
if they're on salary, doesn't really matter a diff.
ApollosMyth 22
It would be illegal (pretty sure) for you to work without pay.

@4 Yeah I can't think of a situation where you can be told to work without compensation? If anything, shouldn't you be paid *more* for overtime hours? I mean maybe it's different if you're a salaried employee.
Welshite 40
I'm salaried for 40 hours, and I've worked weekends and stay late regularly. We don't get paid for those extra hours.
MidnaLink 35
Anything over 40 is pay and a half, so to not get paid for a good chunk of the next 30 hours is nastiness in itself.
MandieL 27
If you get paid salary rather than hourly, many companies don't pay you for extra work. They say it is covered in your salary throughout the year, or your bonus reflects the extra hours you put in.

he's in the United Arab Emirates. different laws

It's a different country American labor laws don't apply over there

She's a woman. In the UAE. I really can't see how that would bode well for her, *especially* if she's not an Emirati. Migrant workers are treated like moldy asscheeks. They're not quite on the level of our Saudi "friends" in terms of human rights violations, but they do their fair share of bullshit.

Unless this is an unpaid internship, cannot see how this would be legal...

Americans sometimes think that the rest of the world should operate exactly like them, which unfortunately is not the case.

Punch your boss and fail your drug test.

Um then say no? This would definitely be your fault if you took the hours knowing he told you he wasn't going to pay you for them ahead of time.
SuperWhoMarvLock 22
If you're not being paid, then don't do it.
