Today, my aunt's last words to me were, "Don't be an idiot". FML
Collection
Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, I was given the following pearls of wisdom: "My grandmother always told me, if you've got nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all. Anyway, she was a cunt and so are you." Thanks, dad. Thanks. FML
Gatekeeping grief
Today, after my cousin recently died, my aunt basically told me that I shouldn't be sad, because we fought. FML
Today, it was my grandfather's burial. As the family was about to leave, a great aunt came up to my skinny, tall and pretty cousin and told her, "Stay beautiful and kind." Then, she walked to me and said, "And you, Stay kind." FML
Death cult
Today, my aunt told me that I'm dead to her now and not to visit them ever again. Why? She found out that I'm pro-choice. FML
Today, I was standing in the parking lot with my sister, after my aunt's funeral, when my grandma walks up and says to my sister, "You're the one going places in life, I'm proud to have you as a grand daughter." She then looked at me, and walked away. FML
Describes most people, really
Today, my mom called me an auntie, as in a "fun aunt that nieces and nephews love to spend time with, but would be a complete disaster as a real mom, in no way, shape or form fit to actually raise a child responsibly." Dad agreed. So did my boyfriend. FML
You're welcome
Today, my aunt asked me to drop off some old stuff to her place. As I'm driving there, my car conked out and I got delayed. When I finally got there, she looked at the time and goes, "Yet another thing you're not good at." FML
Careless words
Today, after burying my dad on my birthday, one of my aunts walked up to me and said, "Well at least you won't forget your birthday." I wanted to cuss her out so bad, like, bitch, how would I forget my birthday and the day I buried my dad? FML
Today, my mom came over to me and whispered something in my ear. I didn't hear it and assumed it was a joke, so I started laughing. Turns out my aunt died. FML
Today, my future mother-in-law gave me advice on life. One piece of advice was that I should leave her son. FML

Unless it was: "Hey Auntie, I don't think you should be doing that..." Aunt: "Don't be an idiot." *proceeds to do the thing, which causes her demise*
SamSwebb 24
At least she didn't call you one

If somebody says, "don't stand so close to me," you /already/ are (or they're Sting). The same applies to being told not to be an idiot, and the OP's aunt probably isn't Sting.

#9: You're "probably" right! ;-)

Not always. If I told you to make the right decision in a certain situation and to not be an idiot, I'd not be implying you were one. It may sound like I didn't trust you enough to do so without my telling you, however it may just aswell be a reminder in a way. Basically what I'm saying is that we need some context in order to judge a statement. In this case we simply dont have any at all.

We have the context: it got posted on FML. Any explanation in which the OP's aunt gave them /genuine/ advice ending with "don't be an idiot" wouldn't be much of an FML, would it? "Today, my aunt said 'don't be an idiot' in a way that didn't imply I was an idiot. On an unrelated note, after not calling me an idiot, she died. FML"

Fair point. However Ops aunt could have meant it differently than Op understood it. Or maybe she was saying nice things and then ended it with "don't be an idiot" which simply rubbed Op the wrong way. I'm not even saying that I think one of these scenarios may be true but that they are very well possible. With all of these FMLs you can never really be sure. That's why personally I don't like to judge things based on such short stories. Some of them are very vague and one-sided.

If more people followed op's aunts advice the world would be a much happier place.

That's what Michael told Dwight, you fool!
sororitytaylor 24
Well the poster is the one getting told that, so they're Dwight! C'mon son
jbuckets_404 39
Perhaps the aunt simply said that phrase in lieu of 'bye at the end of her visit or phone call.
Zarcissa 34
Whoa, for a bit I thought your aunt had kicked the bucket.
WittyMoron 22
Umm, she had.

Then I understood right at first, but got confused at the lack of 'sorry for your loss' comments. I am not a native English speaker so things like this can easily confuse me. :/
