Today, it was the first day of my new job. It was also the last day of my new job. I got a call immediately after finishing my shift to be told the company has "decided to go in a different direction" and will no longer be needing my services. FML

Today, I was supposed to start a new job. I had accepted a new position with a different company three weeks ago, and gave my notice. At the time, I even trained my replacement. Today, I found out that my new work doesn't need me anymore. So, I'm unemployed. FML
Today, it was my last day at work. I was offered a better job and accepted. Not wanting to leave my present boss hanging, I asked for time to give notice. While I trained my replacement, the owner at the new job had time to think about how slow the season is, and he decided not to fill the position. FML
Today, I left my job, fulfilling my one month's notice after receiving a job offer from a much better-paying role. After saying goodbye to everyone, I left the building. Not two minutes later, the company who was offering the new job called to say they'd changed their minds, and there was now no longer a job on offer. FML
Today, I got a new job and told everyone about it. A few hours later, I got an email from the executive saying I actually don't have the job anymore. FML
Today, for the first time since I can remember, I went in to work feeling positive, and that I could make good things happen. At the end of the day, my employment was terminated. FML
Today, after resigning from my current job, I was let go from the new job I hadn't even started yet. FML
Today, I got fired after three days at my new job. They told me it was because of downsizing. They were still interviewing people and had a help wanted sign in the window. FML
Today, after two and half years at my company and after recently being promoted, I was told by my boss the business doesn't feel it needs me, and invited me to find another job. FML
Today, I got a phone call from my boss, who'd hired me after two months of waiting and begging for this position. A week into the job, the company is closing our store. FML
Today, I finalized my new car purchase after three months on the job at a new company. Two hours later, I was informed that my position has been eliminated. I have two weeks to find a new job or I'm completely screwed. FML

The fact that they called you immediately after instead of telling you face to face like good employers do, just shows what kind of organization they are and how they run their business. I would say it's a good thing for you, now you can find something better!

It's not unusual. Upper management may have discussed how OP went with his/her supervisor after the sift concluded and decided then that they were not suitable. If OP had already left for the day how else are they going to let him/her know that they were not required? Would you prefer they wait and tell them the next morning when they arrived?

Possibly... It's a shitty move to allow an entire shift to pass by and then say something. I would feel taken advantage of. They should send you home early, even if before you start, and figure out staffing issues ; it's their problem if they don't have a replacement.

I was just taken off the roster after 2 years of work. Went in and my name was gone. No explanation, but the manager was husband of another worker there who hated me.

I remember the time i fired a coworker I didn't like in almost the same way. lol they never came back to work rofl. The boss then hired my cousin after 3 days no call no show.
