Today, I worked from home to actually be able to concentrate and make a presentation about my project. My boss then sends me a long email about how he wants us to work in the office, and how important it is for team building, giving me feelings of guilt for actually getting some work done. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Shut up already!
Today, I thought working through the holidays would mean little to do and the boss telling me stories all day. Actually, it meant having loads to do, while my boss was telling me stories regardless, effectively keeping me from doing the work he is paying me for. FML
Well done!
Today, I received a company-wide email from my boss, praising a coworker's extra effort at improving our line of business. The coworker's efforts were a direct copy-and-paste of a plan I put together three months ago. No one cared when I gave the presentation. FML
Today, I worked 12 long hours cooped up in my office. Before leaving, my boss asked me whether I'll ever take my job seriously. FML
One law for thee…
Today, my boss called me while I was working from home to bitch me out over being away from my computer for 49 minutes, when my lunch break is only 45 minutes, thus wasting another 13 minutes. My boss is known for spending hours online gaming from home during work hours. FML
No respect
Today, I was excited to finally take a day off work and relax at home. However, as soon as I was on the couch to Netflix and chill with my cat, I got a call from my boss saying I was needed at the office to fix a major issue. I ended up spending the entire day at work and didn't get to enjoy my "day off." FML
Today, I finished a very important but annoying presentation that took four hours to complete. Only after writing a paragraph to explain the presentation and sending it to my boss did I realize that I saved the document as "Shit I have to do to get a promotion." FML
Today, my boss pulled me aside to chastise me for being "off task" because I was chatting with a co-worker while working on a project. She then spent a half hour chatting with the same person about what daycare she should go to for her new baby. FML
Manager of the week
Today, my boss yelled at me for ignoring emails on my day off. Our emails are only accessible from work desktops, so I’d have had to be at my desk to answer it, which I had to explain to him 3 times before he understood. This is what happens when CEO’s promote their nephews to middle management. FML
Today, my co-worker spent the afternoon taking online personality quizzes and messaging everyone the results. She was particularly proud of one which told her she was a hard-working overachiever. My boss walked by just as the message for that one popped up and I got in trouble for slacking off. FML
Rookie mistake
Today, I was working from home. I felt very sleepy, so I set my online status “Active” and went back to bed. I woke up to 3 missed calls from my boss and an email from him, containing a webcam screenshot of me asleep in bed. I totally forgot he has remote access to my computer. FML

I understand his issue with it, but maybe if you explained the situation to your boss he wouldn't mind you working from home on occasion. Either way, good luck with your presentation, OP.

I find it funny that your boss wants you to be there for team building. Team building is usually a load of bullshit. For one, not many people like working in groups or teams and also a lot of work can actually be done faster and better individually.

If her boss was a travel agent, I'd say that they aren't very good at their job because they're sending you on a unwanted guilt trip.

you shouldn't feel guilty if you could work efficiently alone and at home.

He sent you a long email? Send one back; "tl;dr"

then you need to explain your intentions and show your progress.

I wasn't surprised to see you're a PHD student, the pressure to be seen to be working really hard can get intense. From my PhD buddies' and my own experiences I've learnt that you have to trust in your instincts about where to spend your valuable time and just let the guilt trips wash over you.

Maybe you could call in sick, or ask next time? I don't know why it's such a big deal, but rules are rules. Better luck next time!

Why did he authorize it if he's against it?

It might be company policy to allow people to work from home. So, as a manager he might not have the authority to deny it, so he resorts to this. I've seen it happen, managers generally tend to find workarounds for company rules so they can still enforce their own rules.

So explain, work at home on occasion when it's necessary and stop feeling guilty over wanting to get work done.

If he doesn't want his team to work from home, why didn't he make that clear when he hires you? If you just do it once in awhile I don't see how it can detract from team building; your boss probably just wants to hover over you and make sure you're working.
