Today, I went to start my just bought '79 VW bus. I put my key in but stopped due to the strong gasoline smell. I went to check. Found puddle of gas. The previous owner figured duct taping a cracked tank was the same as fixing it. And didn't bother to share that tidbit with me. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, I was at my grandfather's house and my car was low on gas. He said I could put some of his gas in my car. He accidentally gave me the wrong tank to pump it out of, and I put fuel in my car that he uses for his small plane. It never ran better until the engine exploded. FML
Petrol head
Today, while on a road trip with my friends, we stopped at a gas station to fill up. While I was pumping gas, a gust of wind blew my hat off and it landed in a puddle of gasoline. When I picked it up, my hands were covered in gasoline, so I smelled like a gas station for the rest of the trip. FML
Beep beep
Today, I took my partner’s car to fill with gas because mine was in the shop. Out of habit, I put diesel into the tank. We discovered it three hours later; the tow bill ate my weekly budget, the mechanic sighed through the repair estimate, and I spent the evening on hold with roadside help. FML
DIY mecanics
Today, my dad was stupid enough to think that the kitchen sink is a good place to clean a gas tank. Now, the whole house smells of gas fumes and I'm about to pass out. FML
Today, after replacing several components on my new used car, I realized that the reason it wasn't getting the gas mileage it was supposed to because my coworkers take turns siphoning my gas while I work. FML
Not the time to get distracted
Today, after a tearful weekend of burying my best friend, I stopped for gas on my way home. I got distracted by a guy next to me who was acting strange. I unknowingly filled my car with Diesel. It cost over $1000 to tow home, and I can't even get it looked at until Tuesday. FML
Another fine mess
Today, while pumping gas, I stopped to think about what a failure my life is, and how badly I've treated people in my past. While deep in thought, I accidentally pulled the gas pump out too far and covered myself with gasoline. FML
Broke ass dad
Today, I heard water splashing outside of my house; I investigated it, only to find my dad, whom I don't live with, syphoning gas out of my car. FML
Friends
Today, my dad agreed to let me borrow the car to go rock climbing with my friends. He'd just filled it up with gas, which is how I realized halfway back home that one of my "friends" had siphoned well over half the gas straight out of the tank. FML
Fuelled
Today, I went to start my truck that I had parked in my driveway after a long haul. The fuel gauge indicated I had a full tank. I didn't fill up. My neighbours' son decided to fill the tank with water with a hose, 150 litres worth on top of diesel. His dad's response? "Kids eh, what ya gonna do?" FML

Ok you noobs, Obviously you have no clue where the gas tank is on these things. It is behind a cover in front of the engine. No way to see it from the bottom. I drive a '77 and I get 25MPG. So stfu and do research.

Agreed - unless you're specifically looking for it, there's no easy way to see that. Besides, if there's no gas smell, there's no reason to assume there's a problem and go looking for it, right? Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Carfax only report on problems that have been addressed? I doubt if this would show up. OP - I'd confront the seller and ask him/her to either cover or split the cost of the repair. Unless the bill of sale reads in 'as is' condition, you might have a case in small claims court if the seller gives you a problem. After all, they sold you a car and did not disclose a potentially deadly situation. "Buyer beware," yes, but what about "seller be honest"? After all, there was duct tape on it, so s/he knew about it. It's not like it was an unknown problem. Best of luck, with it. A VW van is still awesome. :)

If it makes you feel better, it's really easy to do repairs on an air-cooled VW. Like erector set easy. The old VWs have a good community. Find a forum, they can help you figure out if the tank's reparable or should be replaced and recommend a good site to buy parts. If you don't have tools you may even be able to find someone nearby who would be willing to help you if you're willing to provide beer. Welcome to the classic car world. And remember, the car's 30 years old; no matter what problems you encounter, someone's dealt with it before.

I don't know if you'll read these or not, but Permatex makes a gas tank repair epoxy that lasted, for me anyway, for two or three years. It would get you through while you searched for another tank. Good Luck.

A mechanic is the best kind of friend you can have. Befriend a mechanic and avoid future disasters

You didn't have this van checked out before you bought it? Not smart.
