Today, I was home alone when I heard the carbon-monoxide detector beeping. Panicking, I grabbed my dog, ran out of my house as fast as I could, and waited outside for 3 hours for my mom to get home. Turned out the detector was just out of batteries. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, our carbon monoxide detector started beeping. My mom started freaking out and made me go stand outside so I "don't die". I stood outside for 20 minutes, it was raining and it turned out that the detector was just low on battery. FML
Emergency
Today, I thought I had carbon monoxide poisoning because I had the symptoms and my detector was going off. I called the fire dept, they checked me, they checked my apartment. My apartment is fine; I'm just out of shape, have high blood pressure, and don't know how to work simple electronics. FML
Today, my mother told me that the carbon-monoxide alarm went off last night, but since she didn't smell any gas, she decided to just remove the batteries and go back to bed. I had to explain to her that you can't smell carbon monoxide, and that we could have died in our sleep. FML
Today, my smoke alarm went off. In a frenzy, I called 9-1-1 and exited my house. Several minutes later a fire truck showed up. After investigating, one of the firemen informed me I needed to change the batteries in my smoke alarm. FML
Today, at 2:47 am, my mom woke me up in a panic screaming about smelling gas and the house blowing up. Twenty minutes, two fire trucks, and a traumatized dog later, it was just the neighbors burning their mail. FML
Beep beep
Today, I was cooking dinner when my smoke alarm started beeping. I opened the windows, turned on the fan, and checked everything twice. I then realized the noise wasn't the smoke alarm. It was my oven timer. I'd been cooking completely normally and panicking for no reason. FML
Classic annoyance
Today, I was making dinner when my smoke alarm started going off. I opened all the windows and waved a towel underneath it. After ten minutes, I realized the alarm wasn't reacting to the food. Its battery was dying. FML
Recipe for disaster
Today, while I took my dog out, my mother began to cook, took a Xanax, locked the doors, and passed out. When I managed to get in, I called the paramedics because she was in the smoke for at least an hour. When she became conscious, she blamed me for everything. FML
Leaking all over the place
Today, my nearly ex-husband called in a panic so I could come rescue the dogs, because he'd called 911 due to a gas leak at the house. I came over, after which the fire department and gas company took a look, and they found the issue. The dog. The dog had farted so bad, it smelled like rotten eggs, and was mistaken for a gas leak. FML
Emergency cooking
Today, I managed to set off the smoke detectors while cooking burgers. The cops and fire department showed up. FML

its best to be safe than sorry

For me, I'm the exact opposite. If my detector starts beeping, I'll replace the batteries first before doing anything else. That might be the death of me one day. I also bought detectors that say "Fire" or "carbon monoxide" instead of just beeping, so I actually know when the detector's actually trying to save my life.

Or you could, you know, not panic, open the windows and then make a logical and effective discision

At least you were being cautious? It's good to be safe, even though you might feel dumb now.

"FIRE! FIRE!" I imagine that's annoying when you're cooking.

Blame it on the dog

That's scary, but at least you reacted quick. Practice makes perfect

You absolutely did the right thing. You had no way of knowing it just needed batteries changed. You don't waste time with that.

Actually you do have a way of knowing. The beeping is the indication the batteries need replacing. When a detector goes off it makes a consistent sound or alarm. This is actually required by law and international code. This is for this exact situation, to know that you have to change batteries or know you have to get out quick. At least OP didn't just ignore or remove the batteries to silence the alarm. They now know what the battery low alarm sounds like and can respond appropriately in the future.

Shouldn't it beep every once in awhile? You think that would've been a clue.
