Today, I was eating dinner with my family. My parents didn't want me to hear what they were talking about so they decided they would spell out the words so I wouldn't understand. I didn't. FML

Today, while riding on the car with my family, I put on my headphones and pretended to be listening to music and when my parents talked to me, I pretended I couldn't hear them. They took this opportunity to discuss how fat I was and how I can't hold down a boyfriend. They were laughing as well. FML
Today, I actually had to spell out to my parents that if you don't want someone to repeat the same thing several times, you have to acknowledge that you're listening to them. I've had several occasions where I said something to them 3-5 times, thinking they weren't listening, but then they snapped, "WE HEARD YOU!" FML
Today, my dad and mom and I were going out to eat dinner. My dad wanted a romantic dinner just with my mom so he told me to make an excuse not to go. I did, which ended up as a huge fight, grounded and phone taken away. My dad just stood there in the background putting thumbs up. FML
Today, my parents heard me leaving my room at 2 am, and freaked out because they thought I was sneaking out. I was too embarrassed to tell them that I was getting food instead of having a social life. FML
Today, I accidentally belched at the dinner table. At age 22, I got sent to my room with no dessert by my parents. FML
Today, I went to a fancy restaurant and couldn't pronounce any of the menu items. FML
Today, as I woke up early to do my physics homework, I heard my parents talk about how big a disappointment I am for them. They discussed how stupid, immature and how big a burden I was. They knew I was listening. FML
Today, I found out that my parents forgot to invite me out to eat with them. I found this out when my mom invited my sister right in front of me. FML
Today, my roommate shouted his entire part of the conversation at the dinner table. He refuses to get his hearing checked, nor lower his voice, so now my ears hurt for the rest of the evening. FML
Today, I said a few words to my mom that happened to be similar to something offensive, and she misheard. I tried to tell her, but she was so angry that she assumed I was saying more offensive things. Now she is punishing everybody in the house, and I’m not allowed to speak to her. FML

Actually, USA's literacy rates aren't THAT high... Cuba, Estonia, Poland, Barbados, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Hungary, Russia, Latvia, and a whole bunch of other countries all have higher literacy rates than the United States. #20, get your facts straight. Cuba, for example, is impoverished, and there's no way they can can beat a 99% literacy rate. I highly doubt that any of the other countries you named have a higher literacy rate than that.

I agree with you #124. I'm a Canadian too, and proud. I have met countless ignorant Americans. You have all these sterotypes for us, like how we pronounce "out" "oot", that we live in IGLOOS, that everyone plays hockey and drinks maple syrup, that all we can talk about are hunting moose and owning pet beavers, I mean jesus christ people, give us a break! #66 - I believe you mean onomatopoeia... and you're...but, I digress (beaten to this while I was writing the novel below). I actually agree with the others commenting on the learning styles. Did none of you have a specific teacher or class that had you go through the tests to determine which type you were? I am primarily visual, semi-kinetic. As far as aural/auditory knowledge retention goes, I'm not as bad as the OP, but I do tend to forget information a LOT quicker if I only hear it instead of seeing it demonstrated or reading it. I used to participate (and win) spelling bees, however, so... yeah, guess you've got a 0 in auditory learning (I'm only a 2 on a scale of 10, visual is 9, kinetic is 4). You might want to consider looking into getting some vocabulary software that has vocal pronunciation and spelling of words. This is only an FML if you do nothing to change it!
