Today, I was at work when a co-worker decided it would be funny to email me from my boss's computer to tell me I had been laid off. It wasn't funny when I was fired for real after "skipping work without giving notice." FML

Today, my boss let me know that I'm being laid off, via a text message that ended in "lmao". FML
Today, my boss called me to inform me that I'm being laid off. In my ensuing fit of rage, I deleted the recent project I've been working on for weeks. Pretty soon after, he called me back to let me know it was a prank. FML
Today, my boss suspended me for laughing too hard at my desk and causing a big scene in front of our customers. I was laughing because he'd forwarded me a hilarious email. He was practically smirking as he handed me my official warning. FML
Today, at work, I stepped out for a few minutes to use the bathroom. Shortly after returning, I found out the hard way that one of my coworkers had used my computer to send a profanity-filled email to our boss, calling him an asshole and telling him to go fuck himself. I'm now jobless. FML
Today, my boss tried to fire me for not emailing him a screenshot to prove my email wasn't working. FML
Today, when I got to work, I found out that I was being laid off. Two hours later, I found out my boss had my name on the wrong list. I was elated. I went to lunch, but on the way back was rear-ended, in the rain. I was an hour and a half late getting back to work. I was fired upon returning. FML
Today, I found out that I was being laid off via an email that wasn't even spell checked. FML
Today, at work one of my co-worker was oddly nice to me; and my boss, who usually always says hi to me, didn't look or speak to me. Later that day I found out that I was going to be fired, not because my boss told me but because my picture was missing from the wall of employees. FML
Today, my girlfriend came to my workplace to tell me she was breaking up with me. My boss, who was passing by, fired me for "chatting with friends" during work hours. FML
Today, it's my birthday and I had to work. My boss wished me a happy birthday, and then told me I was fired. FML

I feel like this is something that would be discussed in person anyways. Then again, I work in a small business where the boss has time to pull me aside and say "sorry but we are laying you off"

What I really hoped happen is that the coworker faces up to what he/she did, and talked to OP's boss. It may mean they get fired, but it's not okay for their stupid prank to make someone else lose their job. Even considering coworkers I've really disliked in the past, I would never wish them to be fired over a mistake I made. This world can be unfair enough on its own at times.

At my BF's job they are required to lock their computers if they leave their desk, because the information they deal with is private. So if some unlucky newb forgets to lock theirs, they may have 'unintentionally' sent a few emails about how they are going to Justin Beiber concerts, get a few new backgrounds put up.. Or in extreme cases send a resignation email. Thankfully though the boss usually sends an email back, cause she's used to it.
