Today, I told my parents that all I wanted for my 18th birthday was to go to a restaurant in NYC for a nice dinner. My parents said no, because it would cost too much money. I came home to see my parents had bought a huge TV for $800. We already have 3 televisions. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, I went to dinner with friends for my birthday. During the whole thing they insisted that we get whatever we wanted and celebrate, but when the check came, they all looked at me expectantly. I just bought my friends $150 of food for my birthday present. FML
Today, I bought my mother an expensive TV she had been looking at. After I bought it, she continued browsing for more stuff. I told her I couldn't afford the extra items. She got mad and called me "selfish". FML
History rocks
Today, I told my parents that what I'd really like for my 21st birthday is the 1865 edition of the Memoirs of Saint-Simon in 22 volumes that I found online for $200, and have been wanting for months. They laughed and said, "Yeah, right. We'll get you an iPhone and perhaps you'll become normal." FML
Priorities
Today, my mother flipped out that I spent $20 on a gift for myself for my birthday. Instead of getting a gift for me, she spent $300 on a new vacuum cleaner, and claims that we didn't have enough left in our budget to spend on me. FML
Today, I spent over $2,000 on a big flatscreen TV. My dad insisted I let him mount it on the wall instead of paying someone to do it. All seemed fine, until the TV came loose and smashed onto the floor. My dad refuses to accept responsibility, and says I should've had a professional install it instead. FML
Today, it's my birthday. My parents, with whom I live, told me that they didn't get me anything, but instead they said they would knock off a bit of the housekeeping I owe them. FML
Today, I bought my son a nice car for his 18th birthday. When I gave it to him, he just got mad and told me that if I really wanted to spend that much money on him, I should've used it to help him pay for college. FML
Today, I found out my mom is getting rid of cable TV. My dad and I bought her a 700 dollar plasma screen TV for Christmas. FML
Today, after months of living on five dollars a day for food in college, I found out my parents bought me an expensive meal plan and forgot to mention it. FML
Fine mess
Today, I begged my parents not to take me to a restaurant for my birthday, but sure enough, they took me to one, along with my siblings, aunts, uncles, you name it. Ordering with them is a nightmare, so after a whole half-hour the waiter still hadn’t gotten everyone’s complicated orders written down. FML

I'm gonna say FYL because I live in NJ and while it's hard to get to NY just for dinner, for a birthday that's a reasonable gift, so to say that's too expensive and then buy a brand new tv, that's just rude.

In order for you to feel better about that, I highly recommend the book The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. She talks about the irresponsible things her parents do throughout her childhood.

I dont know why 1100 people think you deserve that. Thats very unloving. You didnt deserve that girl. When they go out, have a guy friend or your boy friend (if you have one) move it into your room and then THANK them with a card for the TV!

I can't believe you guys click YDI. Let us take it in turns: 1. Who the hell needs more than say 2TVs in the house, unless they have a huge house and/or are dirty rich? 2. Why does "nice dinner" mean hundreds of bucks?! Granted, never been to New York, but I always thought that for $100 you get to eat your own weight in food? 3. She DIDN'T get the TV, the parents bought it for themselves. 1+2+3 = FYL :(

Stupid children, feeling entitled just because. Dinners in NYC ARE expensive. And who are you little brats to say what your parents spend their money on. You obviously haven't been bitch slapped enough growing up.

The folks can only afford an $800 plasma TV? They must be low on funds. Another whiney 'poor me' FML from another spoiled, 'entitled', immature douche. No sympathy for you! Buy your own dinner.

Dinners in NYC are friggn expensive but I DOUBT it'd cost anywhere near 800$ unless all the dining utensils are solid gold. What materialist jerks.

This is definitely a FML. Of all the things teenagers ask for, the OP asked to go for a FAMILY dinner in NYC. You don't meet a lot of 18 year olds who are all for spending time with their family like that. I'm sure she understands her family's financial situation and if they can't afford a $400 meal, they'd go somewhere they can afford that's still nice. I think that the OP just wanted to do something nice with her family that everyone can enjoy, instead of asking for some new electronic or some material thing. HOW is that selfish? Then her parents go and buy something for hundreds of dollars for themselves?! I get that they might have been saving up for it for a while but it's a little tasteless to go out and get it on your daughter's birthday, when you just told her you can't afford to get her what she wants.
