Today, I got fired from my job for stopping a shoplifter. Where's the logic? FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Snitched
Today, I caught a grubby, evil-smelling, foul-mouthed woman blatantly shoplifting by stuffing electronics into her coat pockets, so I detained her and called the police. Less than an hour later I was fired. She was the shop owner's mother and “had permission” to just take stuff. FML
OK Shaggy
Today, I was fired from my job at a local family-ran restaurant. The Reason? The owner's daughter has been stealing money from the register little by little and has blamed me for all the lost money. The boss is still convinced it's me, though, because his daughter would "never tell a lie". FML
Lying liars
Today, while working at McDonald's, I was pulled into the manager's office and informed that I'd been caught stealing money from the safe. When I told them to show me the security footage, they refused and fired me on the spot. FML
Today, my sister got me in deep trouble at the store I worked security for. She "dropped by to say hi" and stole a bunch of things when I wasn't looking. I wasn't arrested, due to lack of any evidence. But my boss didn't care about evidence and fired me anyway. FML
Today, I got fired from my job because I closed the store 84 seconds early. They found out because the state manager was sitting across the street with binoculars watching me. FML
Today, I got fired from my job. I caught a customer taking pictures up my skirt, and my boss fired me for calling the police and "making a big deal out of it". FML
Rummaging around in my stuff
Today, I got fired from my part-time job, because I insisted on keeping my phone in my pocket and never using it, instead of putting it in locker without a lock or security camera, that anyone can go through. The manager found out by searching my locker for the past 3 weeks. Ironic. FML
Public freakout
Today, a customer at work became violent and started hitting me and my coworker. Not wanting him to get the shit beat out of us, I used a move that pinned the guy on the ground. The police came and he was arrested. I was then fired for assaulting a customer. FML
HOW CAN SHE SLAP?
Today, my boss fired me. I still can't really explain where the slap I gave him for it came from, though. FML
Today, I was accused of shoplifting, after the alarm started beeping as I walked into the store. FML

The logic is that the shoplifter could have a gun, a knife or something like that. Your job would rather lose whatever is being stolen than pay for your medical expenses.

I used to work for a convenience store. The manager posted a sign behind the counter. "NOTHING IN THIS STORE IS YOURS, OR WORTH YOUR LIFE." Just keep telling yourself you're just the guy in the middle, but it isn't affecting you directly.

It’s cheaper to pay for what was stolen than paying for your hospital/workers compensation for when you get hurt on the clock

Don’t forget the lawsuit if the shoplifter got hurt.

I feel like there is more to this story

Probably not. As others have said, stores would rather lose the merchandise than risk someone getting killed Not to mention that in today's society, the thief could sue the store for all sorts of BS and probably win. It wouldn't matter if they got hurt.

You are most probably right. Nevertheless still FML for the OP.

There’s plenty of logic in it. Safety and legal issues. When I worked retail I was specifically told never to stop someone you believe is shoplifting. Safety is important but the kind of hell that can rain down on the store if you’re wrong? Many places would rather risk losing $50 worth of merchandise than going to court.

We need more information here. Did someone actually hold you up, or did you just stop someone trying to sneak free things out? I can see where this would be an FML if it was the latter, but if it was the former you're just supposed to give in to whatever they say and let the police handle it.

Unless your are management or security, you can’t stop them, at least by Walmart rules. The shoplifter could claim that you are harassing him and sue.

That’s ridiculous! It’s not like you put chicken on your salad.

did they have a "don't be a hero" policy

If you're not a trained security guard and you caused any injury to the shoplifter, they could then sue you and your employer for the injuries. This is America.
