Today, I found out the time I'd requested off for a trip in 2 months, that my boss said that I could go on, wasn't fully processed, just in case he decided I couldn't go. He told me the second part after I'd bought no refund tickets for shows for both me and my girlfriend. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, after realizing I had 130 unused vacation hours, I requested two weeks off. My vacation time was denied, but my boss still gave me the time off. So I don't have work for 2 weeks, all unpaid. FML
Today, I told my boyfriend I wouldn't be able to get any time off work to go to Mexico with him, and that we'd have to get our tickets refunded, and reschedule. He said not to bother, and that he already had someone else in mind to take with him. FML
Today, I found out that my 2 week Christmas vacation my boss was talking about wasn't for this year, but 2010. I spent the day with my husband cancelling flights to Florida, and explaning to my 8 year old why we were not going to Disney World. FML
Today, I was telling my co-workers about how I'd gotten tickets to a concert in a few days. My boss overheard. Later, he told me I now have to work on the night of the concert. However, he was kind enough to offer to buy the tickets off me for half of what I'd paid for them. FML
Memory error
Today, I lost my job for taking an unauthorized vacation. I just got married and requested time off for the wedding and honeymoon months ago; it was approved then. They forgot, and then got angry because I didn't remind them. I did remind them, the day before I left. FML
Today, despite having my 5-day-leave approved 2 months ago, my boss demanded I return to work in the middle of it. Why? She wants to go on a vacation and no one else is available at such short notice. FML
Deal with it
Today, my boss selected me to be the company representative at an important meeting in Portland with one of our biggest clients. I was thrilled, until I realized he hadn't said anything about my plane ticket or hotel reservation. He later told me that I'll need to acquire those things myself. FML
Today, I submitted a vacation request to my manager and it was approved. I came back from lunch and was informed that I have been let go. FML
Management for dummies
Today, it’s the middle of my vacation and I just got a notification saying my time off request was denied. A month earlier, I got the notice saying it was approved. I’m literally 4 states over. I’m not going to have a job when I get back. FML
Sneaky sneaky...
Today, while on vacation, I found out that my boyfriend moved out. He had claimed that he couldn't come with me because his boss messed up his time off request, and for the last two days he said he'd been "cleaning". FML

Go anyway. Your boss can learn the hard way that his employees are entitled to time off, be it for a vacation, sickness, bereavement, or pregnancy. See your shows, give your girlfriend a trip to remember, and let your boss suffer without you. And if you feel so inclined, look for a new job before you leave, that will allow you to start once you return.

Sell them on StubHub or Craigslist. Or kick your boss in the balls. Or both.

If he said you can go the first time, go. If he changes his mind, he’d better reimburse you for the whole thing. It’s one thing for a friend. I’m not letting a boss waste my time and money.

I only know of a few industries where during busy times of the year it’s acceptable. A few other fields, it’s year round and goes with the territory. It does not sound like you have one of those jobs. Stand over him and make him process the paperwork. Even if it means involving HR. If you don’t have any backup from the company, it’s probably a good sign it’s time to look for something better.

Even for jobs that gave busy seasons, bosses can’t say an employee can go on vacation then take it back just because they want to.
