Today, I dropped my car keys down the elevator shaft at my dorm. I had parked my car at a parking meter, and now had no way to get change out of my car. It took six hours for someone to get my keys, and I now have a $75 parking ticket. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, I dropped my keys in the sewer. The spare ones are inside my locked car. FML
The key to my success
Today, after being without my car keys for two days, I finally got a locksmith to unlock my car on the off chance I'd left my keys in there. $170 later, the car was open, but I didn't find my keys. Frustrated, I threw the paperwork in the garbage... where I spotted my keys. FML
Today, I locked my keys in the car while the car was running because I got out to get the parking ticket attached to my windshield. FML
Today, I locked my keys in my car. My spare keys are 45 minutes away in my dorm room. My dorm room keys are attached to my car keys locked in my car. Security said they would let me in as long as I had my school ID. It's on my keychain. FML
Today, my keys disappeared out of my car door during the 50 foot walk to the trash can. When I finally went to security after trying to find them, they said someone drove off with my car right as I walked in the door. FML
Today, I locked my keys in my car. I had a spare key in my wallet, that I also left in the car. FML
Today, I discovered that I had lost my phone. I drove to the campus to try and find it, and parked in a gated lot where you pay when you leave. All the buildings were closed, so I had to go home. That's when I realized that I didn't have my wallet to get my car out. And no phone to call a ride. FML
False economy
Today, I walked ten miles to pick up my car from the towing station. Turns out there was enough change for the parking meter in the glovebox after all. FML
Petrolhead
Today, I finally found a parking space directly outside my apartment after driving around for 20 minutes. I celebrated, parked, and walked upstairs. Ten minutes later, I realized I'd left my car running with the keys still inside. FML
Locked in
Today, I locked myself out of my apartment. I've just realized that I could have spent $30 on an Uber or Lyft to my parents' place to grab the other set of keys instead of calling a locksmith and paying $280 for him to drill a hole through my doorknob, rendering all my keys useless. FML

How the hell did you drop your keys down an elevator shaft?

Then you get a report from the person who retrieved your keys and take it to court to fight the ticket. Easy!

that was smooth, but couldn't you just go and put more money in the meter while you wait for someone to get out the keys?

I would like an answer to #1's question. Aren't there safety guards or something in place to prevent that kind of thing? YDI for not putting change in the meter first, for not finding change to put in after you were locked out, and of course, for locking your keys in the car.
ImaginaryFoe 1
I meant for dropping your keys down the shaft.
boatkicker 5
ImaginaryFoe, they probably did put change in first, just not 6 hours worth of change.

ImaginaryFoe have you never noticed the gap between the elevator and the floor when you are getting off and on? That would be where the OP's keys went. And to answer your question, no, most elevators do not have any kind of safe guard to prevent small items from falling down through that gap.

Why didn't you just pull some sic ninja james bond shit? Y'know, wedge a shoe or something in the elevator doors then send the elevator far up. After it goes up, you lower yourself down with some rope that's anchored to the nearest door nob. Get your keys, climb back up, problem solved. Of course, its too late now. But next time...

Uhh.. Win?

There's a small, tiny hint of win in there. Amongst all that rushed typing and those grammatical errors. *hands you a magnifying glass* This should help. :)

I'm not sure you can fight a ticket by telling them you were an idiot...
idkweird 0
Eh, I doubt the OP purposely dropped them. Do you have to be an idiot to drop keys? She was simply unlucky in where they landed. I'm pretty sure the courts would understand that she was unable to get into her car, and if she can show when she called maintenance and the maintenance person will attest to when they got there, then it proves her story.

Courts don't care about your personal interest stories. They just want your money. They're extortionists. You could have been trying to save a baby from a fire and they would still demand payment. "F-you pay me."
idkweird 0
They do, however, care when moving your car was impossible. If she has documentation to prove that the scenario happened, they will most likely dismiss the ticket. It's when people come in with sob stories that can't be substantiated that the court gives them a little dose of reality. If the OP is prepared before she goes into the courtroom, she should be fine. It's all about whether or not she feels it's worth it to get rid of the 75 dollar ticket.

why didnt you sit in front of your car and pan handle for change? STUPID!!!

I'm always afraid I'll drop something down an elevator shaft. Sorry it happened to you.
kally2010 0
yeah but now you don't have to get new keys r if some1 had stolen it a new car !!

You don't have enough friends to cover 6 hours of parking meter change? You're right, that's an FYL.
ruby84 1
75$ which you can pay at a later time- stop crying over little things like that. I'll press YDI just for wasting our time. It would've been worthy FML if, for example, you had fell through the elevator's shaft or something.
