Today, for the nth time, my father reminded me that I should study things related to the "real" world, as if I was studying theology, astrology or something. I'm studying for a master's degree in physics. FML

Today, my daughter believed that watching the Big Bang Theory would count as studying for her chemistry final. FML
Today, I went to visit my dad for the first time in over a year, as I have been studying for my Master's degree in history halfway across the world. The first thing he said to me? "So, gotten a real job yet?" FML
Today, I had the worst day of my life. I'd studied science for the whole damn night, only to realize the next morning that it's a math exam. FML
Today, I asked my father for some help paying my college tuition. He told me he'd help me after I become more accredited than he is. My father has 2 PHDs. I'm studying to be an elementary school teacher. FML
Today, I realised that I still don't know what to do with my life, since my parents have taken decisions for me my entire life, and are forcing me to a field of study which requires enormous amount of dedication and years, which I have no interest in, but still have to do because I don't know what else to do. FML
Today, I had a conference with my dad, my counselor, and my history and English teachers because my dad was "concerned" about my grades in those two classes. We talked for a while and it was going well, then my counselor asked what I wanted to study in college. I said I wanted to be a teacher. He laughed. FML
Today, I went to my guidance counselor and told her how I'd been fascinated with space since I was 12, had read about the universe and everything, and how I want to be an astrologist when I grow up. She stared at me for a second, before saying, "But you're... stupid." FML
Today, my teacher told me that unless I went into medicine, math, or engineering, I would never amount to anything in life. This wasn't even two minutes after I told him I want to be an author. FML
Today, my boyfriend once again cancelled a date because he has too much homework. His professor is my dad, who's assigning astronomical amounts of homework to keep us from seeing each other. FML
Today, as I rung up a customer's groceries, he gave me a pitying look and said I'd have a "real job" if I'd only studied harder. FML

Can you please calculate the amount of force necessary to knock some sense into people? It's got something to do with mass and velocity, but that's your field, OP, not mine. Physics is a very applicable and needed science in today's world. Your dad needs to stop implying that it's not useful, because it is extremely relevant. Congrats, OP, for sticking with a field that has excellent jobs.

He also probably thinks things like business, accounting, economics, politics, and communication are important in the "real world". I think it was less of an attack on physics, and more of a reminder that not everyone you meet will be able to talk about detailed scientific discoveries with you. Still glad the OP is following their dreams and ambitions. Physics is a worthy thing to study; we need more people doing it. :)

I'm looking for a job in the field of anthropology, I just have a Nobel Peace Prize for my inspiring and enlightened comments on FML. I think that guy who contacted martians may be more qualified than me, though, even if it's outside the field of research. You see how silly our culture is that it's "just" a Master's Degree?
