Today, after months of delays, my home renovation is nearing completion. Well, it was nearing completion. Last night, a pipe burst, flooding the entire house. The water damage will cost more to repair than the entire renovation. FML

The contractor is responsible if you're using one. Homeowners if you're not.

That is what I was wondering

Wouldn't your home owner's insurance cover this type of thing?

would a contractor be responsible IF they had NOTHING to do with the pipes in the house? This is a house renovation, not a complete house construction. Could just be a lot of making the house open floor plan or creating another floor or something that would not necessarily affect piping. The original pipes might have just been old as frick and this was the (sudden and unfortunate) warning sign to do major plumbing work.

That's why you have homeowners insurance. On the plus side your won't have to look for a contractor and he will be happy to do more work for you.

aren't you insured?

It's either YDI or FYL depending on whether you have insurance to cover this or not.
