Stuck

Today, I was feeling down about being stuck in bed after ankle surgery. I thought I would go ahead and call my boss and let him know everything went well. He said the obligatory nice things, then told me that if I'm not at work on Monday, I'll be fired. I can't even get out of bed. FML

Halloween

A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.

Hopefully he's joking. If not, sue for unfair dismissal.

That's illegal. Employers have to give you leave for things like surgery. There's a federal act that mandates it called FMLA. If he attempts to fire you over this, you can definitely get him in a lot of trouble.

That's harsh... And illegal.

He knew about the surgery ahead of time ,so he can't fire you.

In a good number of states, you can only qualify for FMLA if you have worked for your employer minimum of 12 months and as full time or close to full time. I hope that OP is able to take steps to keep their job unless they were unhappy working there...then maybe this will be a blessing in disguise.

FMLA requires that your company make over 250k and have 50+ employees. So if it's a small business, FMLA doesn't apply.

Maybe he planned on firing you before so now he's making an excuse to fire you...

ydi for giving your boss a progress report. what did you expect? Him to be like, well i enjoy being understaffed so you can take as long as you like before coming back.

so youre saying he should have not said anything and that would help his case?

It was just your ankle. Get some crutches and get over it.

Have the doctor talk to your boss.

What a prick!! Sue him if he does fire you!

You should have at least told him you were stuck in bed. However, I'd presume it's a hollow threat.
