Today, I finally got the courage to ask my workmate about her tattoo. She's been in the office for 4 months and I'd always wondered why she had a red cheese grater tattooed on her arm. So I asked. Turns out it's a lady's shoe. She walked away from me and never talked to me again. FML

Today, I decided I was going to dump my needy girlfriend. I was about to break the news when she stopped me. She showed me her new tattoo she had gotten. Our names, surrounded by a love heart spread across her back. She reckons I should get a matching one. FML
Today, we didn't have much to do at work, so I struck up a conversation with a coworker I have a crush on - a girl with one arm. I wanted to tell her I thought she was pretty, but I ended up saying I thought she looked like a pirate queen. FML
Today, I met my brother's girlfriend. We got talking, and we got onto the subject of tattoos. I said how much I hated tramp stamps, and how they make girls look trashy. She said, "Like this?" and showed me hers. FML
Today, I decided to talk to a girl at the gym I had seen there a lot. I walked up to her at the station she was at and asked her out to dinner sometime. I didn't realize she had been wearing headphones. She took them off and asked if I was waiting on the station. My courage left. I said yes. FML
Today, I was at the gym trying to work up the courage to ask a girl out. She was on the treadmill, and I thought it would be cute to wave hello. Instead, she looked horrified and sped up, then slipped and fell off the treadmill. She thought I was mocking her, and now everyone at the gym hates me. FML
Today, I finally got the courage to ask out a girl I've had a crush on for months now. She told me I was very cute and then walked off. I still don't have an answer. FML
Today, my new office mate offered to let me smell her deodorant. This was after clipping her nails, before pulling out her needle point project, and while complaining how overworked she is. FML
Today, after more than six years of working my ass off, I finally summoned the courage to ask my boss for a raise. She just chuckled, "I'm gonna need you to eat a dick, John." and stared at me unblinking until I awkwardly left. FML
Today, despite my warnings and knowing I hate them, my wife got a trashy tattoo of an eye on her ankle, like she’s Count Olaf. How is she going to get a job with that thing? FML

I have to wonder how bad the tattoo artist must have been, to manage to make a shoe look like a cheese grater. That's a pretty hefty difference in shape, there.

So she never talked to you again. Of course, since this happened yesterday, it means that she hasn't talked to you for a few hours. Just apologize and try to phrase your question better next time. For instance: "Oh, nice tattoo, what's the story behind it?".

I so want to see the tattoo! Also, OP, don't feel too bad, if people can't figure out your tattoo after looking at it for four months, maybe another tattoo artist would have been a better choice.

ALWAYS open with, "Hey, may I ask, what's your tattoo?" Then she would have said... "Uh, a red shoe?" Then you would have said, "Oh! Silly me!"

Hindsight is 20/20, but maybe next time go with something like, "Can I ask if your tattoo has a special significance for you?" Then you might get something like, "I just really like shoes" or whatever. If her tattoo is really that ambiguous then I'm sure you're not the first person to ask. :)
